Bookies, taxi drivers and Best of the Rest

93

I know we’ve touched on this recently but it’s worth repeating.  Celtic will meet with and speak to many candidates for the manager’s job.  Some will be genuine ‘targets’, some will be applicants, who the club meet out of courtesy, some will be more general fishing exercises.

Agents, taxi drivers, hotel staff and grannies will get wind, so information slips out.  As a result, this information attracts considerably more weight that the unknown activity which is going on simultaneously.

If the bookies know Celtic have met someone, that person becomes favourite for the job, because the bookies know very little about what is going on.  Bookies know they are in the dark, so the risk of a significant exposure on one position is great.  Their market can also quickly become illiquid, not allowing them to defray the risk.

Right now Celtic are still considering options, no one has been offered anything.  Even when they get to offer stage, there will still be a way to go before an appointment is made.

I see Aberdeen have signed two new players this week, as well as securing one of last season’s loaners on a permanent deal, and extending the contracts of Anderson, Robson and Nicky Low.  These are the actions of a solvent, forward-planning football club, and they’re not alone in the Premiership.  If you’re betting on anything, back them as Best of the Rest, but it’s probably more profitable to keep your cash in your pocket.

If you missed it yesterday………

Lisbon Lion John Hughes is joining Brogan Rogan, Auldheid and Angela Haggerty for a CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June. The event is ticket only, so let me know if you would like to attend, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Good reset Paul. As usual we have Chick Young telling us its Roy Keane, the DR telling us its Coyle, Henrik, or anyone that’s ever sniffed a shamrock.

I think it’s fair to say there is a selection process going on and the constraints and variables will narrow the field.

I have purchased tickets for the commonwealth games and both myself and husband have disabilities which impair mobility we are arriving from Ireland so need our car . the site says there are limited blue badge places(which we both have) but just keep checking for details, so my question is does anyone have any iknowledge of when this might be or how many places there are available?

Thanks for the update re Aberdeen, it’s always good to see a club planning ahead for the season next! Think their new stadium, (to be sponsored by Donald Trump) is still on hold, which tells me, that despite taking 40,000 fans to Celtic Park for a League Cup final, they are not in a position to challenge Celtic. Might have helped if they had had some support from the oil industry over the years but with a city motto of ‘dirty deeds done dirt cheap’ perhaps that is not surprising. Meanwhile down on the coast, Southampton have given themselves a target of getting a new manager in before the start of the World Cup. Here is a club which, with a handful of players they could easily sell, plus next seasons TV money could actually make some serious money for their owners. Didn’t work out well last time mind you, but as everyone who plays the Lotto believes, the numbers look better this time around.

I have more faith in our board than to believe the Roy Keane rumours.

If it is true then we are simply Dermot’s plaything for him to pass around his pals. Would be a hugley unpopular appointment. Let’s hope it’s taxi driver nonsense!

  13. traditionalist

Even if Roy were appointed, I would not expect to see that promise fulfilled.

The Keane rumours have been strengthened by a flurry of Irish bets being laid. Who is to say whether DD has struck those bets because he’s money mad or whether he struck them in order to mislead?

Be patient and the announcement will come.

We started with Yogi and BRTH and we knew that would be a good night.

Auldheid has family in that part of London and was visiting that weekend – so we added him.

Angela has recently moved to London and we like and respect her – she has taken some incredible stick from the other lot on social media.

Talking of taking stick from them someone on FF has been reading a copy of Tommy Gemmell’s new book All the Best and they have been debating this extensively since the weekend. Suppose it has to be expected from them and Tommy will be well used to it.

I just spoke to Willie Wallace – he was telling me about events in Lisbon. Apparently our BIG Cup is bigger than the one Real Madrid won at the weekend. He also mentioned the mischief outside the Sevco store at Glasgow Airport – although in typical WW fashion he declared “it wisnae me!”

You may have noticed that TG wasn’t in many of the photos in Lisbon. The trip was very hard for him. He’s enjoying a wee break at the moment and won’t be watching BBC2 or be reading CQN today – comment above effectively stops me getting any more Lions on here.

  16. The Honest Cover up

Any appointment is going to attract begrudgers and critics because their favourite has not been chosen.

I would take your use of “hugely” as an exaggeration, and I was no big fan of Roy’s as a Celtic player or of his behaviour towards Mick McCarthy in the WC. But, I’d be prepared to see if he had developed as a coach and manager from the experiences at Ipswich, Sunderland and ROI. So long as he does not buy Daryl Murphy back, of course :-)

Although its only rumours at this stage if Roy Keane gets the nod we will prob find ourselves in the same position this time next year again looking for a manager.

He will lose the plot, spit the dummy out with all the hassle and quit. Moody, arrogant and no doubt a few fall outs along the way.

Now is the time to bring in a manager with a foreign approach and something completely different in my opinion.

Not the usual ex celtic connection type of manager who is close to Mr Desmond!

Celtic star Anthony Stokes has been warned by a judge that his alleged assault of an Elvis impersonator is no minor offence.

After reading medical reports of the alleged victim, Judge Michael Walsh said the injuries were too serious to be dealt with in the Dublin District Court.

He ordered the case be sent back to State prosecutors before a decision on whether Stokes will have to stand trial in Ireland’s higher Circuit Court.

The Ireland and Celtic striker, 25, who was in the court in central Dublin dressed in a navy suit, white shirt and navy polka dot tie, will have to wait another seven weeks before hearing the fate of his case.

Judge Walsh said he was refusing jurisdiction in his court – effectively recommending a higher court take on the case.

“If these are the injuries the injured party sustained, to my mind this is not a suitable court,” he said.

The judge added: “As a matter of fact it is not a minor offence.”

Stokes was accompanied in the courtroom by his father John Stokes.

Judge Walsh said the Director of Public Prosecutions will have to review the case and come back before the court.

Stokes was remanded on bail until July 17.

The footballer, with an address in the west end of Glasgow, was arrested by appointment earlier this year and charged with assault causing harm to Anthony Bradley, 42, at Buck Whaley’s nightclub on Leeson Street, Dublin, on June 8, 2013.

The court heard he made no reply to the charge when it was formally put to him.

He was granted bail on his own bond of 1,000 euro (£814) with no cash lodgement required.

The incident is alleged to have happened last June, several hours after an international between Ireland and the Faroe Islands at the Aviva Stadium.

Mr Bradley, an Elvis impersonator from Ballyfermot, west Dublin, was treated for a suspected broken nose and chipped teeth following an incident in the nightclub.

Regarding Dan Petresco-maybe he has agreed a deal with Celtic.

We will do a few deals in principal, but only 1 of those guys will get the chance to sign that contract.

Maybe Petrescu will be that guy.

For me-Roy Keane will get that chance….IF he agrees a deal.

“Roy Keane is set to be named Celtic manager after a flurry of bets were placed on the Irish assistant manager taking over at Parkhead as successor to Neil Lennon.

The odds on Keane being appointed as the next Celtic supremo were dramatically slashed from 33/1 to even money – one firm, BetVictor, went to 8/11.

While betting indicators are not always reliable, Sportsmail understands that Keane is on the brink of being appointed by the Parkhead hierarchy”

Roy Keane spent £80 m on transfers at Sunderland buying stan Varga Ross Wallace Liam Miller Craig Gordon and Anthony Stokes.

He also spent a fair wack at Ipswich including the £8m purchase of Anton Ferdinand.

Maybe he would be a better manager on negative net spend?
