Brendan delighted with window as Celtic business complete

691

Brendan Rodgers declared himself delighted with his first transfer window as Celtic manager, which is now over, after the additions of Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Dorus de Vries and Cristian Gamboa.

Toure, Dembele and Sinclair, the managers three primary targets, were acquired early, while de Vries and right back, Gamboa, were added recently. Deals went close to the wire today but the hoped-for midfield player (which was never James McCarthy) didn’t materialise.

A permanent deal for a (known around these parts) central defender to backfill Jozo Simunovic, who was wanted by Torino, couldn’t be tied up either, so Torino also look to have missed their target.

You’ll hear direct from the manager soon enough but he’s got the calibre of recruit he wanted – which he didn’t know would be possible three months ago.

There was never anything possible to make a formidable Champions League group look any easier, but we’ll compete at the top table, and we’ll wipe the floor with all-comers domestically.

More tomorrow.

    What about the Green Man?

It wasnt me who couldnt sign a decent midfield player, even though the 50,000 season ticket money and 30 million from the CL would make that likely.

But no….they couldnt manage to sign a decent midfielder.

    What a surprise eh…..again:)

The whole scenario is a farce.

We have to ignore the cheating, and not complain about where the money goes.

The PLC look the other way, their only concern is bonus money.

And they still wont call the cheats out.

    Its a disgrace.

  18. * I feel BR has done excellent work so far.

    * On the down side this was the opportunity to add a quality midfielder with the attraction of Champions

    League football.

    * In all likelihood we won’t have European football post Christmas so real quality unlikely to come.

    * Next summer we’re back into the lottery of qualification.

    * BR had stated that qualification for the CL would make signing real quality possible.

    * The pre-season tournament fee would cover the net spend on fees of circa £3million so why have we not

used any of the other monies that have come our way?

    Now … E-Tims ….

They’ve made an EXCELLENT point about the coming rammy at Celtic Park.

I know we’re OBLIGED to give an away team an allocation, but when you’re talking about a club who’s board is on the record as justifying pitch invasions, assaults and sectarian singing are they REALLY the kind of people we want to give 7000 plus tickets to?

For our own SAKE we should have sought to limit that number, even if they respond in kind.

They are dangerous, frankly, a club run by seriously unhinged people and supported by even more.

When I wrote an article last year on whether or not we should ban them from Parkhead entirely the response, as you can imagine, was overwhelmingly supportive of the idea.

    They’ve got worse since then.

  27. Mathieu Flamini is still a free agent (I think). I reckon he is the sort of non flamboyant, shield the defence, don’t give the ball away, receive a pass from the CB, sitting midfielder we could use for our CL fixtures.

Alternatively maybe Kolo could move to a sitting midfielder and Lustig move into CB.

  28. MALARKEY:

By the way, that’s an outstanding point and I wonder how many other very decent players are out there, right now, available for free.

Flamini would be a very good shout. An old head, European experience … yep, good call.

  29. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    Good morning..ish,

Just trying to catch up, so haven’t read back, so I presume we are mostly happy, over all, with the transfer window.

I wonder if Mc.Carthy was the player that Brendan really wanted?

If so, then I am quite happy that he is still at Everton, or more precisely, the Physio’s couch at Goodison, awaiting confirmation as to whether he needs a groin op or not.

So far, all the players brought in have improved the team. Gamboa still to show.

Even though we had no new “ins” yesterday, I consider Jozo’s collapsed move to Torino a blessing for us……like signing a new player (c. some nutter).

Happy to see Chucker Mulgrew vacate the premises. Just Commons of the Dissenters left, after Scott Brown had a word in his ear.

I’ll finish now and let Paul post a new article.
