BSkyB suffering after taxing fans for years

677

BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa.  What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise.  If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.

Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky.  It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans.  Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.

The same is true for English football rights.  20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights.  If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.

BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share.  I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

  5. Without a scattergun approach, I think people talk absoute keech about Celtic youth coaching in particular, and the state of youth football in Scotland in general.

I watch at least 2 youth games every week, outside of pro-youth.

I see boys with all the basic attributes of football. Many of them with excellent skills.

Ive watched a few pro-youth games, and again, most boys on show are definately talented footballers.

I rarely see a hook up the park and everything in the air type approach to a match.

and whisper it, often i listen to coaches in their team talks and think, wow, they know what their talking about.

the step up to the Pro game, thats the hard bit, its more than a size issue (islam feruz and gould being talked abut in spain by the way).

now , parents on the sidelines, you can hear a lot of pish there ………. almost like at the real matches.

  6. The Battered Bunnet on

Not surprised by the BBC story on Whyte’s links with Sevco, but must confess I am a little surprised that it’s a Police matter, indicating that the issue at hand is a little more serious than Whyte being involved as a Sevco shadow.

Moreover, from what I can gather, it looks more as though Whyte has been scammed than has done the scamming – there is nothing illegal (excl Money Laundering) in funding a business enterprise anonymously.

    Interesting.

Stokes is average at best and would be happy to accept a bid for him

This is, indeed, REALLY interesting…….if Whyte was involved, they’re scuppered….

A source close to Green told BBC Scotland that he is co-operating with police, while a

similarly placed source for Whyte says police have not contacted the former owner on the matter.

The investigation is being carried out by Police Scotland’s Economic Crime Unit and they also want to speak to Green about a document submitted to Companies House.

This document lies at the heart of Whyte’s claim that he and Green were working together.

When the Scottish Football Association transferred the liquidated company’s membership to a new company “the key requirement” was the total lack of involvement of Whyte.

Pardon my ignorance but I don’t get it
