BSkyB suffering after taxing fans for years

BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa.  What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise.  If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.

Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky.  It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans.  Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.

The same is true for English football rights.  20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights.  If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.

BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share.  I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

“We all have been abroad and heard folk ask about Celtic who love our reputation for pure beautiful attacking football, people only talk about the fans and atmosphere now, probably for the best they don’t talk about the football, or lack of it.”

I have never heard a foreigner who expressed love for our pure attacking football since the late 60s and early 70s. It has always been about our fans. The only person I heard extol the “pure attacking football” quote was Jock Stein and he used it to refer to the Lisbon Lions era.

No other Celtic sides were admired on the continent; they were barely aware of us.

Que sera sera, – we got an undisclosed fee depending on your source, and your present Goalkeeper considering his age, has just about eclipsed him.

Now according to CQN posters he really will leave, for a big fee along with VVD or any other snip we make.

I still maintain some Celtic fans get excited about fee money, they’ll never see,

Fraser is great and will become even better but he has not yet equalled Artur’s performances, good though he is.

I only get excited by a fee when we lose out on money we should have got. I cannot think of another player that we undersold- maybe Shaun Maloney??

  13. Evening all. Am I right in thinking that BBC Scotland’s “revelations” about the murky goings on in Govan point to our ole hero, Whitey, has tried to retain control of the deid team through his front man, Greeny, who in turn tried to shaft the Motherwell billionaire? Hasn’t this scenario long been painted on this very blog?

Surely, we must have higher ambition than just punt on some recruits for high fees ?

I thought we were a football club in it for the glory?

  18. Summa,

Good article from Celtic underground. It’s a view I have held for sometime.

If you go deeper than the turgid displays especially when we have been knocked out of the cups or lost the league at ICT. In my view there is questionable motivation even the recent Morton game is an example. However the players are not prepared properly. The attacking play is stifled. Even on Saturday we played with one up front until we got the set piece goals.

The fitba is on a par with Strachans and far removed from the way a Celtic team should play ESP in a one horse race.

We actually have creative players but they are stifled by Lenny. Lennys mandate is not to give the ball away. It’s drummed into the players, but the result is with lack of movement in the rigid system players dont take the risk and we end up with the horizontal passing game with crosses into the box. There is zero creativity.

In fact Lenny summed it up himself when he said they were practising headers to score from crosses.

Rangers: Police investigate Craig Whyte links at Ibrox

    11 November 2013 Last updated at 17:53

    By Alasdair Lamont

    Senior football reporter, BBC Scotland

Police are investigating whether former owner Craig Whyte is still involved at Rangers.

And they have written to the former chief executive Charles Green to ask for his help in their enquiries.

Green stood down from his position in April following allegations he colluded with Whyte to buy Rangers’ assets.

An investigation funded by Rangers cleared Green of any wrongdoing but Police Scotland have been passed files by the law firm who carried it out.

And BBC Scotland has seen an email sent by police last month to a lawyer representing Green.

When the Scottish Football Association transferred the liquidated company’s membership to a new company “the key requirement” was the total lack of involvement of Whyte.

Green resigned after Whyte alleged the pair colluded in the sale of the Ibrox club’s assets after a period of administration.

Rangers asked the law firm Pinsent Masons to investigate those claims – and though they found no evidence, they have passed files to Police Scotland, who in turn have asked Green for his version of events.

Police Scotland will not comment on ongoing investigations.

A source close to Green told BBC Scotland that he is co-operating with police, while a similarly placed source for Whyte says police have not contacted the former owner on the matter.

The investigation is being carried out by Police Scotland’s Economic Crime Unit and they also want to speak to Green about a document submitted to Companies House.

This document lies at the heart of Whyte’s claim that he and Green were working together.
