BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa. What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise. If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.
Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky. It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans. Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.
The same is true for English football rights. 20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights. If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.
BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share. I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

Update : and apologies for length, but Important detail
* * * FUNDRAISING SUPPORT CQN STYLE * * *
Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust (group77)
Bhoys and Ghirls, looking for support with a very Important Fundraising initiative for my Daughter.
Laura is a member of HCPT 77, from this year, having been in the Scottish Youth Group section for several years, (a life changing experience for not only Laura, but the children who attend) acting as an entertainer for Children with special needs, disability, or underprivileged etc, on an annual Easter week Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
This year is different, her first year as an adult carer, and allowed to fully sponsor and support 24/7 a child throughout this trip.
To allow this to take place, she needs to raise £1000 by December, to fund the Child.
We are looking to run over the course of the next week, a Football Card,
50 teams and £10 for a team, with a very special prize. ( we can add more teams if more contribute)
“The Calm before the Storm” a 44″ * 32″ portrait of the Nakamura free kick goal scored against Man utd on 21st November 2006, ( it was £500 when bought)
If you would very kindly like to support this, please drop a note to
HCPT77@hotmail.co.uk.
We will respond with details on how to pay into the fund and have the chance to win this prize, once payment made, a team will be allocated, and hopefully drawn by next Friday ?
Thanks to all in advance to all who will support
The prize (thanks to Doc for posting);

“I remember being in mourning for weeks when King Kenny left, then similar with Charlie Nic.
Surely, we must have higher ambition than just punt on some recruits for high fees ?”
Yes, me too.
But it was a different era. In the post-Bosman world you cannot trust you will have a player beyond 3 years and, if he’s pretty good, one year in our peripheral league.
It amazes me that, when we see the same thing happen to stars in Portugal, The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, all of the former Yugoslav states, and , even in France, that we expect Celtic to buck this trend and be able to keep sought after players.
The choice nowadays is sell them for money to buy the next player to develop into a star or let them take advantage of your softness, romanticism and nostalgic views, and leave for nothing.
Look how quickly Sutton, McNamara and Agathe left when we wanted to pay sensible wages. Henrik was the only one worth making a deal with to leave on a Bosman.
Doc, will happily invite you round, Wed or Thurs night to make draw, once the names pledged make the donation,
Although we could hang off to hit 67 ?
CRC suggests 88
Absolutely over the moon, that a child, accompanied by Laura, will make the Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Does anyone know if this is being considered and how to go about it?

Virgil could make Perry Como look nervous.
You know up to now I have believed Peter Lawell when he says every penny Celtic get will be re-invested in the team/ club.
I never bought into the “where’s the Mcgeady money” gone debate. To me it was pretty obvious that it was used to help us break even in a year without Champions League football but also to fund the purchases of Juarez, Izaguirre, Murphy, Kayal and Hooper.
However, it will be interesting to see what will happen over the next 12-18 months.
Our latest accounts showed we made a profit of 10m and had 4m cash in the bank at the end of the financial year. These accounts incorporated the purchase of Rogic, Balde and Van Dijk but did not reflect the sales of Wanyama, Hooper and Wilson for a combined 20m.
So basically at the start of this season we had 4m in the bank. We then pocketed 20m from player sales but probably spent another 6m of that on Pukki, Boerrighter and Biton. So the balance should be somewhere around 18m. We then qualified for the Champions League which usually means we gross an additional 20m……but costs also go up with participation in the Champions League (flights, stadium running costs, player bonuses) so lets be conservative and say we make a similar profit to this season of 10m (which included purchases of Balde, VVD and Rogic).
That’s another 10m on to the 18m. So what are we going to do with this 28m? I think I have been reasonably conservative in getting to it…it could be higher…..maybe it’s lower…..but surely it’s in the right ballpark??
The other thing you need to take into account is that we will probably lose another 1 or 2 players at the end of the season for decent money. Forster will probably go…..he could get us anywhere from 6-10m. That’s all before you even start to contemplate qualifying for the Champions League again next season.
Based on all of that surely there is some money for us to buy a couple of good players in January!! Even just the proven goalscorer we all know we need. As I said at the start I have 100% believed Lawell in the past but the next 12-18 months will test that faith.

Clutching at straws there, pal……nice try…..audited accounts report on exactly where the money comes from, and where it goes…..that’s why the word account(able) is used……when a Company fails (repeatedly) to produce accounts, that’s when the snowball starts rolling inexorably downhill ….hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Ah but the plan is ‘spend what you earn over a given cycle’ but the length of that cycle is never revealed. It could be 3, 5 or 10 years. Who knows?
