BSkyB suffering after taxing fans for years

BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa.  What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise.  If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.

Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky.  It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans.  Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.

The same is true for English football rights.  20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights.  If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.

BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share.  I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

I went in person tonight tonight to confirm after two phones calls to the CSC confirm that the booking I made for the CSC for Billy No’Well was sound, as I had a bad feeling. It is not. DO NOT GO TO THE CSC after the AGM. I will look for an alternative venue that genuinely are able to accept and welcome us after the AGM.

I had a close friend who worked for Sale Sharks and Stockport County in terms of Sports Marketing when Kennedy was in charge of both.

Lets just say the experience was “challenging” in every respect.

Stockport County Fans hated Kennedy in every respect.

Half the staff openly hated him and members of his own family seemingly did everything they could to annoy him.

When he was interested in Ibrox my friend said his MO would be to use the stadium as often as possible for as many things as possible. Football Saturday, Rugby Friday and if you could make a track for speedway or greyhounds the you could bet on him doing it.

Also– he would never spend a pound when 50p would do so in that respect some would certainly not have liked his approach.

Oh– and he didn’t give a toss what anyone else thought about anything.

  26. Celtic have begun moves to strengthen their squad by making an offer for Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson, an Icelandic under-21 striker, and also expressing their interest in Zhang Xizhe, a Chinese international midfielder.

According to Sverrir Einarsson, the chairman of Fram, the Scottish champions have bid in the region of £120,000 for Fridjonsson, who was on trial at Lennoxtown earlier this month. The 20 year-old scored 10 league goals this season as Fram finished 10th in the 12-team Iceland Premier League and won the cup. Einarsson believes a deal for the 6ft 3in player is not too far away from being concluded.

“We have received an offer,” he told STV. “We responded to Celtic last night and we are waiting to hear again from them. They are not far away [in terms of the fee]. I think we are hoping it will happen. Celtic would be a very good club for him. He is a special type of player and I would be disappointed if he didn’t go all the way. I believe that he will.”

Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, also revealed the club are keen to sign “phenomenal” talent Zhang. Lawwell, who was part of a delegation that travelled to China earlier this month, watched the 22-year-old and was impressed, telling Chinese media there would likely be an opportunity for Zhang to join Neil Lennon’s side next year. With Celtic keen to tap in to the Chinese market, Lawwell hopes the player could make the same impact as Shunsuke Nakamura, the Japanese playmaker, and Ki Sung-Yueng, the Korean midfielder. Zhang, who plays for Beijing Guoan, has been capped seven times for the Chinese national team.

“We were informed about him earlier this year,” Lawwell said. “He is an intelligent player and left a profound impression on us. We are very interested in the local market. In addition, we wanted to have a look at Zhang and a better understanding of him. He is a phenomenal player and he is very hopeful of getting a place in the Celtic squad. He is young and is very good both physically and technically. He is progressing all the time and showing improvement.

“One of the most important issues would be how he would adapt to the rhythm of European football. Shunsuke Nakamura and Ki Sung-Yueng had great success with Celtic and both are similar to Zhang. But of course, he would need to prove himself. Next year, we will return to Beijing to discuss matters relating to business cooperation and when the time is right, we will invite Zhang to join the team.”

  31. I am not a fan of Martin O`Neill. He did a very good job at Leicester but ,IMO, his success at Celtic is overrated. He bought success and his teams were boring. Also, I always felt he was a tad unstable. I believe people in control of their emotions are more likely to achieve success than are those who seem to be constantly animated. For all the media goes on about Neil Lennon “fuming, roaring and blasting” , Neil`s tone is invariably that of a man in control of himself ( except on the touchline at matches ! ).

Martin O`Neill`s comments on Di Canio are not becoming of a manager still heavily involved in the game.
