BSkyB suffering after taxing fans for years

677

BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa.  What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise.  If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.

Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky.  It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans.  Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.

The same is true for English football rights.  20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights.  If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.

BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share.  I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

Have any of the CQN statisticians yet posted the last time that Celtic scored 4 headed goals in one game ?

    Anybody ?

I remember a cup semi final at Hampden Celtic won 4-0 and all the goals were headers King Kenny got at least one.A midweek game.Had to be the 80s..

  5. Guys & Guirls,

I really believe the money is available to buy big ( By our standards ) the problem remains.:- How do we entice a big name player? Up and coming players will use us as a stepping stone. Agents etc. will not want their star pupils going to what they perceive as an inferior league. It will diminish their sell on value.

Like it or not for an established player at his peak years moving to Scotland is regarded as a backward step. This is the reason we have so many projects.

One of our marketable selling points no longer exists i.e. the “Old Firm” games. It is a sad fact and one that puts the club in a quandary.

What is undeniable is we are crying out for quality up front. As was stated earlier in a slightly different context ” How do we equate fitting a square into a circle” Without a move to a league more befitting of our status it is not impossible but certainly problematic.

I do not have an answer, and that is the saddest part for me. Maybe we will find out on Friday if PL has an answer?

What we do have an answer for is to optimise fitness, review of physio techniques ( Too many injuries, repeat injuries and length of treatments ) motivation and tactics.

Although we cannot change the competition we can provide fit, motivated players playing every game to win with an attacking ethos.

Night all. Over to the Moonhowlers.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

PS : I thought Kojo’s analysis of various players was pretty accurate tonight.

  6. I believe PL gets the bulk of his remuneration from the fiscal year performance driven bonuses?

Therein lies the problem……..if we keep players the turnover is low and the PL’s bonus is low.

If we sell the players then the turn over is higher and so is PL’s bonus.

    Something has to give………..

Maybe PL’s earnings should be loaded at the front end and thereby negating his need to move players on for financial reasons (and self gain)…..or at least slowing the process down from say an 18 month turnaround to 4 seasons……..and allowing the manager the opportunity to build something worthy?

Successful though the buy-develop-sell strategy is it risks putting attendances on the road to terminal decline….they are already slipping.

  10. from TSFM….

I pointed out to AIM a couple of weeks ago that Green’s shareholding was still listed despite the notice to the stock exchange at the beginning of October announcing that Green had sold his shares. Good to see that it has been corrected.

    However questions remain.

There has been no other changes to the shareholdings of anyone else on the 3% and over list on the RIFC Plc website. Had any of these shareholders bought Green’s shares then there would have to have been a notice issued to the stock exchange.

So, who bought Green’s shares? 50,000 bears each buying 100 shares so that they can turn up at the AGM? I don’t think so.

The name of the new owner of Green’s shares is being deliberately hidden. Perhaps it’s Craig Whyte, he’s collected the money that he owed, the cops have found out and that’s why the police investigation has resurfaced. If that’s the case I will die laughing!

  13. I heard Keevins tonight saying he got an email from Jack Irvine. I would say those emails will be flowing thick and fast for the next few weeks between Irvine and a compliant media. I would say the bad news stories will come out in one fell swoop so no one story can be scrutinized for too long and Jack will have earned his dosh. First time I’ve heard Keevins say he had contact with Jack.

  14. Looking forward to receiving the new CQN Annual tomorrow morning! If you want your copy this week order now!

No one is trying to take an advantage you, you are ‘grown up’s’, with the exceptions of those

who for some reason, come on here with their version of why the team is performing so badly. Some are forever looking at, tactics, players, manager, management, formations, medical staff, psychology dept, team selections, lennoxtown, injuries, ( why so many),! I thought the last one is one every should understand, we play in the SFPL, most of the time,

others are allowed to kick lumps out of our players! It’s like a badge-of-honour thing!

IMHO most of you that come on here with any of these afore mentioned articles, know as much about Celtic F.C., and all the above related articles , and the KOJO’S of this world, as my arse knows about Snipe-Shooting!

Off topic-Embdae stayed at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel recently? Any reviews or how the hotel or how the wee toon is,thanks.

Toon is quiet as you like. Best pub is the Aboukir. Kinloch, along from the Aboukir, on the main street can be so-so. The Station, next to one of the three, yes THREE, railway stations is alright too.

Kids hang around the war memorial on the main street, next to Indo Spice takeaway, who do pretty decent cheap scran – I recommend their large munchie box.

Head along to the seafront park beside the leisure centre and you can take a picture of the sign (dolphin, deck-chair, sandcastle) drawn by my oldest daughter when she was in p5. The leisure centre itself closes at 10pm during the week and 6pm at the weekend (I know). As well as the leisure centre, there is also a rather crud crazy golf course. I think this is closed during winter (again, I know).

Imperial Chinese takeaway do a cracking salted pepper chips for a couple of quid.

Erm, that’s pretty much your lot.

Aye, erm, the hotel is quite nice from what little I’ve seen of it: been in twice – once at Chrimbo and once when the aforementioned oldest daughter was a golf ambassador for some amateur world cup event thing a few years back.

    I also live there.

  17. If you are looking for witness statements of incidents in Amsterdam It would be good to try and track down the big lad Patrick that was hit by police. He is from Glasgow and his bus was leaving at midnight from the stadium car park. see my story.

We walked across dam square around 430pm and headed for an Italian pizzeria just at the very far corner of dam square. Everyone was in high spirits in dam square and at that time no sign of trouble. We enjoyed a meal in the restaurant and the police came into the restaurant for a takeaway pizza and were mixing well with celtic fans in the restaurant.

Around 550pm approximately we seen loads of fans running past the window of restaurant being chased down the street by police horses and police. It seemed to me they were emptying the square and forcing fans out of that area. We left the restaurant around 6pm and as we walked across dam square it was very erie as the place had been emptied at that end of the square which was in stark contrast to the scenes an hour earlier. We headed across dam square towards the street that takes you to the train station. Police horses and police were forcing everyone onto the Main Street towards the train station out of dam square.

As we crossed to that end of the street it was packed with fans running away from the police. We met a big harmless lad called Patrick from Glasgow who was shaking and crying. He had been hit in the side by a policeman. Patrick does not drink. He is a nice big lad possibly in his early 40s. He is a lad who could be described as having slight learning difficulties. A loveable big harmless lad who was scared. He said he was in the square and he seen a policeman talking to him. He did not know what the policeman was saying as the policeman had a shield and his visor on. He went closer to the policeman to see what he was saying to him and the policeman hit him in the side with his baton. This happened around 6pm.

We walked with Patrick down the Main Street that leads to the central station. Patrick was badly shaken up. He was shaking all the way down that street for a good 15-20 minutes after being hit. I was travelling with my dad and his friends. My dads friends who did not have tickets are 81 and 66 year old. They took Patrick to our hotel which was just along from the central station. They watched the game with Patrick in the hotel bar. He was pretty upset. Patrick did not have a ticket but his bus was leaving at midnight outside the car park stadium. My dads friends made sure Patrick got a taxi up to the stadium to get his bus home. His bus was a glasgow Celtic Supporters bus that was leaving the stadium at 12. If someone could track down Patrick they could maybe get a statement sent to JP. The big lad was harmless and to be hit by a policeman was nothing short of shameless.

Glad you have eventually enjoyed yerself, I think:-))))

  22. SFTB,

Thanks for your reply. We will always be miles apart on certain things. If we had gone in with a £5 million bid for Alfie and been knocked back,so be it.You can argue with me all day long, the fact remains every game we play in we are hampered by not having a 30 goal a season man up front.Strikers as everyone knows are a valuable commodity. If you dont want to pay the money you get what we got.Projects,hopefuls.That is not good enough for a team with,I hope Celtics ambitions. We replaced good with, well,at the moment, not very good goalscorers. The transfer policy is fine if used in the right way.We cant expect to make vast somes on every deal we do.When we sold Hooper,we should have replaced him with like, even for like money.(sorry for the “Somes”too lazy to go back,We made big money on other deals.

I do not want Celtic to ever settle for just getting there. You can argue this is not the case, but vast amounts of fans think it is.We were lucky to reach the CL this season because we weakened the team and did not try to replace them.I,and many others dont want to see that happen again. From a position of strength,I have watched Celtic throw it away in the past by not strengthening at the proper time.

  23. Anyone who believes that Peter Lawwell’s annual income is enhanced by the selling of players for profit is living in cloud cuckoo land. No football club board in the world would be daft enough to sanction such a contract, not even Sevco.

Where some people get their ideas from simply beggars belief at times.

Next someone will be blaming Lawwell for players getting injured on the park. Oh wait . . .

    Kojo

Basically you are saying that Celtic need to sign a player for £6m+ like we did with Sutton and Hartson? Those days are gone. We need to take gambles on some of these guys.

I don;t think we got it right this summer but we are not going to sign top class established EPL players.

    LB

Why should those days be gone?.We were never selling players for £12,5 million,or even £5-6 million as in Ki and Hooper in those days.Buying a striker for that amount of money, and if he continues will give us a great return also when he moves on,as he will. Its not money down the drain.Unless you want mediocrity.

  25. Turkeybhoy –

The problem is, if a player can command a 5 or 6 million fee, he won’t come to Celtic, unless we do what the Huns did to attract that type of player.
