BSkyB suffering after taxing fans for years

BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa.  What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise.  If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.

Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky.  It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans.  Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.

The same is true for English football rights.  20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights.  If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.

BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share.  I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

Imagine a Celtic team comprising the following players, being our top transfer earners in the past 4 years:

    Boruc

    Wanyama

    Hooper

    Ki

    Wilson (K)

    McManus

    Maloney

    Crosas

    McGeady

    Fortuné

    Sheridan

Would they be doing any better than the current team?

Personally, any team with Wanyama in it is stronger than one without, and we’ve clearly failed to replace Hooper’s goals, but I’d bet on the current team to beat these guys, and I’m enjoying league football a great deal better this season than last.

Yeh, we sell players. We buy some more. That’s the way of it. It’s an unpredictable adventure. I kinda like it that way.

  2. Good win on Saturday and what a beautiful setting for a football game with the backdrop of snowcapped mountain peaks and a great playing surface. A lot of negative stuff written about Celts in the past week and we have more than held our own in this Champions Lge.

    and that includes Ajax.

Celtic have suffered three defeats by the slenderest of margins and a fine line between success and failure in these games. By my reckoning, we have a goalkeeper and back four that is the equal of anything in the Champions Lge with Mikael Lustig being the outstanding player and indeed it’s not that long ago when he was the butt of severe criticism in his early days with the club. It’s also good to see Beram Kayal getting back to his best form.

Watching Pukki on Saturday there is no doubt the lad has good technical skills that you see in a lot of players on the continent, perhaps he could do a job in midfield.

He may not be a striker in the Magic Zurawski, Jan Venegoor, Hooper class of recent times but the lad has to be given a chance to find his best positio

  5. THG gave me some of my best memories at CP, the penalty save from Saha and the Spartak shoot out in particular but when he left he was a shadow of the player who starred for Poland in Euro 2008.

Equally I remember him in the 2-1 Cup win v Dundee, the goal he conceded that day was beyond a joke and was a measure how far his standards had dropped.

I think there can be an element of rose tinted specs, yes we know how much he and the cream buns despised each other, for that fact alone he will always have hero status but he escaped criticism that others would have been utterly lampooned for.

A flawed genius. Too flawed unfortunately.

Delighted at his rehabilitation at Southampton.

Re manager and tactics , I believe many on here want to return our playing style to the early 80s I.e. No tactics and are also imposing their fading memories of long lost days to the current team.

Just think back to the BTM cavalry charge , tell the players their brilliant, no-one tracks back , make the centre halves look stupid , yes let’s send a team out to the sound if the bugle.

I think you are spot on re transfer cash….Lots of folk get really excited about how much we will get for player a or b or c. It seems as if we are building up their transfer value. I also think NFL is prone to do this to. When King Kenny was sold I was sick for a long time and never went to

Stayed in the Carnoustie golf club hotel. Cracking hotel. Good facilities. Me and the wife stayed 2 nights. Drove to Dundee shopping one day and Arbroath the other. Not much to do in Carnoustie but a couple of decent bars. The pool and spa are excellent at the hotel.

    If it’s a quiet break you’re after it’s perfect.

The hotel bar is expensive. As you would expect. We stayed in the Van De Velde suite.
