BSkyB suffering after taxing fans for years

677

BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa.  What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise.  If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.

Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky.  It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans.  Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.

The same is true for English football rights.  20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights.  If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.

BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share.  I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

” I would swear he is Peter Lawell posting on here.”

Aye, I get that a lot. It would be a quieter life if I just assumed that the Board were wrong in everything they do; that is the default position of all Celtic fans from birth. I feel that all Boards in all industries are full of overpaid and underworked individuals but I do not want a fan run Board. I do not want socialism in a competitive sports environment. Let’s have better social policies in health, education, housing and industry before we turn on the less important and quirky area of sport.

I want a good striker too but I’ll judge whether he is good based on how he plays not how much he was bought for.

The Board made a bigger mess when they managed to sell Artur Boruc for less than £2m. That was a bigger trading crime than buying Mo Bangura or trying out loan players and getting rid if they don’t make it.

I look forward to a good striker coming soon or emerging soon. When that happens we can turn our attention to moaning about another sub-standard position.

We waste so much energy imagining how much better things could be that we fail to celebrate our success. CP is filling up with spoiled moaners. So what, we did not get a great Centre forward. We did get a great Centre back partnership. We can then turn to fixing the attack.

The transfer window is a couple of months of moaning about who we did not get. It happens twice a year. And then we spend the next 8 months complaining about what we did or did not do in those 4 months.

The Viv Nicholsons in our support would reduce us to the level of the 90s in no time at all.

Not surprised by the BBC story on Whyte’s links with Sevco, but must confess I am a little surprised that it’s a Police matter, indicating that the issue at hand is a little more serious than Whyte being involved as a Sevco shadow.

Moreover, from what I can gather, it looks more as though Whyte has been scammed than has done the scamming – there is nothing illegal (excl Money Laundering) in funding a business enterprise anonymously.

This is, indeed, REALLY interesting…….if Whyte was involved, they’re scuppered….A source close to Green told BBC Scotland that he is co-operating with police, while asimilarly placed source for Whyte says police have not contacted the former owner on the matter. The investigation is being carried out by Police Scotland’s Economic Crime Unit and they also want to speak to Green about a document submitted to Companies House. This document lies at the heart of Whyte’s claim that he and Green were working together. When the Scottish Football Association transferred the liquidated company’s membership to a new company “the key requirement” was the total lack of involvement of Whyte.

If, the SFA had done their job correctly, would there be any requirement for the Polis to get involved..?

Here here! Too much is made of the need to spend a barrowload on a striker or for a midfielder, defender or GK for that matter.

I posted a few days ago it is all about getting the right player for the right price. We have historically bought players regardless of position for a reasonable amount who have hit the ground running. They were proven goal scorers with their former clubs and continued to do so when they came to Celtic, even in sides that were not the greatest in our illustrious history.

By the same token we have historically paid top dollar for quality and they too have done well. However, we have also paid top dollar for so called quality and they have flopped.

Gone are the days we will pay top dollar, there will be those that ask why, bottom line is it is the way of the world and indicative of the league we play in.

Bottom line is we have to be cuter in identifying and signing proven professionals who will effectively contribute to our cause. And then we have to utilise their talent effectively by knowing where they fit in and then using effective tactics to get the best out of them.

We at times will need to pay a little more than we would want to. However, we also need to waste money on players who are second rate and taking them for the sake of it.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Au contraire re Artur Boruc,………’his tea at Celtic was very much oot’ as they say, and the fee undisclosed (whether £2million or not,) was business sense, and by no means in the Bangura book of tried and failed.

Artur was no longer Celtic class on or off the field, and Fiorentina god rid some years later, for zilch.

His renaissance as at Southampton is welcome, but belated, he’s a fitter man now than he was when he was in his Celtic indisciplined time.

On the question of a ‘striker’ it wouldn’t have mattered who we’d signed in time for Amsterdam, that defeat in particular wasn’t about ‘the’ striker we’ve never signed.

  16. Does anyone recall the precise wording of the brief given by The Rangers/Sevco to Pinsent Masons?

  17. Having to prepare today for a hospital scan tomorrow, I took time out to read the final chapters of Sean Fallon, Celtic’s Iron Man by Stephen Sullivan. What a story, what an honest, wonderful person, what a fabulous Celt.

  18. Latest from the spivs inside Ibrox giving their response to the spivs who want to replace them:-

“THE Company is aware of the press speculation following statements made by former directors in relation to the club’s shareholders – Blue Pitch Holdings and Margarita Holdings who hold a 12% stake.

The statements in the press refer to these shareholders as “mysterious backers” and indicate that institutional shareholders may seek to call an emergency stakeholder meeting to bar the voting rights held by these shareholders.

The Company wishes to clarify that the Company has, under section 793 of the Companies Act 2006, addressed requests to funds and nominee shareholders of the Company, including Blue Pitch Holdings and Margarita Holdings asking for details of their shareholdings in the Company.

These funds and nominees, including Blue Pitch Holdings and Margarita Holdings, have properly responded to these requests. Grounds for action to be taken against Blue Pitch Holdings or Margarita Holdings for non compliance with a section 793 request have not been established and there is no basis for the Company to seek to impose restrictions on the shares held by these shareholders.

In addition, the Company has responded in full to a request from the former directors to provide copies of the responses to the section 793 requests that have been made by the Company.

The Company understands that these former directors will, having seen these responses, be aware that there are no grounds to take action to bar voting rights.

Institutional shareholders, therefore, would not have a legal basis to convene a general meeting to pass an ordinary resolution to require the Company to take action to bar votes held by these shareholders.

The Company also wishes to confirm that it respects the rights of all of its shareholders and would not seek to restrict or remove any shareholder rights unless there are legal grounds to do so for a proper purpose.

The Company wishes to reassure fans and shareholders that there is court precedent which provides that shareholder voting rights cannot be removed for the purpose of barring a shareholder from voting at a general or annual general meeting.

The company also expresses surprise that former directors and their supporters have stated that there should be no more appointments to the board.

Acting Chairman David Somers, following discussions with shareholders is actively seeking to strengthen the board with new appointments and he does this with the support of the majority of shareholders.”

Heard Malcolm Murray on Shortbread earlier. The guy is utterly unbelievable. There were long pauses when he was asked basic questions as he tried to think of the best way to position certain statements.

His response to an extended challenge on why he used the….errr..”unfortunate” phrase “no surrender” was that it was the questioner who was at fault for making an unintended inference. What a master of equivocation this guy is!

Interesting article referencing General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald. Would you really expect the readers of FF to know their history? I bet they could tell you all the gaffers in the shipyards from 1939 to 45 though.

Not that I am one for conspiracy theories but :- To cut a long story short ; Hector MacDonald did indeed rise from Private to General. The Gaelic speaking son of a crofter was offered a VC or a commission for outstanding gallantry. He chose the latter.

He finally committed suicide following accusations of inappropriate behaviour towards local boys. Such was his popularity there remains the theory that he was the victim of a conspiracy by the British establishment motivated by jealousy and snobbery.

Its hard to believe British establishment and conspiracy in the same sentence.

    I disagree.

Artur was weaker in his final season having let his standards slip. He had been a top 10 rated world class keeper the year before and could have been sold for £10m then. The £2m quoted was a steal, if true, as even a weakened Artur could have been marketed as a player capable of being rehabilitated so an additional payment should have been negotiated if that came true. Far from being on the slide at Fiorentina, he replaced the French goalie, Frey, who was there and played 62 games in 2 seasons as first choice in a top Serie A team, despite their concerns over his fitness and application. They made an obvious mistake in letting him go for nothing just as we did in letting him go for next to nothing.

If Lionel Messi went on a bender during his 6 weeks off injured would Barca knock 80% off his transfer value? You would be lucky to get a 10% reduction.

In WGS’s team, Boruc was, at one point, in the top 10 in his position, Naka and Aiden would maybe scrape in the top 100 in their position. Nobody else would be in the top 300 for their position.

I reckon we undersold him and the evidence is there in his performances at both Fiorentina and Southampton.
