BSkyB suffering after taxing fans for years

677

BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa.  What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise.  If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.

Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky.  It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans.  Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.

The same is true for English football rights.  20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights.  If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.

BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share.  I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

Nobody will ever convince me that the Hooper incident was a penalty at Tannadice that day. There were two chellenges that were penalties. One by the defender and the 2nd by the goal keeper. Clear penalties as you are likely to see.

The ironic thing is Dougie Dougie was right on it and seen it clearly and gave the penalty and then changed his mind.

“But answer me this-how many longstanding Tims of your acquaintance are happy with what is on display. ”

I have no accurate stats for this question but I’d guess it was, as I’d already conceded, a majority. But being dissatisfied with the product and feeling that one or two big signings will make a difference is two separate questions.

I think a lot of our dissatisfaction comes from:-

Absence of a threat to a league title stroll

Opposing views between the “play the first 11” view and “give the youth a chance” brigades.

The quality of hammer throwing and defensive tactics of many of our outmatched opponents.

The constant rebuilding of teams we have to do as a selling club in a peripheral league with no money and a poor climate.

The knowledge that we have some spare money and the burning desire to spend it to see if it might just, against the odds, make a difference.

the mistaken belief that the past was a vista of 5:0 wins against fellow Scottish clubs served up with vintage displays of on the deck football.

The preponderence of forums like this which give a platform to amplify the dissent, distress and plain tantrumming of our bhoys following dropped points.

    The fetishising of a treble.

The mistaken belief that we are an established big team and cannot fall off the big team ladder.

    And many more factors.

However, I have a basement room to finish painting. The wife says its Apricot but its looking pink to me.

    I’ll catch replies later.

  7. With Balde & Pukki just arrived a few months ago and still settling in.

With Stokes signing a contract extension.

With Sammi’s representatives in talks to extend his contract.

With Fridjonsson looking likely to arrive in January.

We will not be signing any more strikers in the transfer window.

We are continuing with our buy cheap and in bulk strategy to signing strikers, hoping one of them turns out to be a goalscorer.

And any young player in the youths, or out on loan, can forget getting a chance to prove themselves.

  8. A real shame for the people losing their jobs, but I noticed who the administrators are for Barratts, the shoe retailer:

“High Street shoe chain Barratts and DVD rental chain Blockbusters have both gone into administration, putting more than 3,000 UK and Irish jobs at risk.

Duff & Phelps has been appointed as administrator to Barratts.

It said it was reviewing the shoe chain’s financial position, as well as seeking a sale of the business.”

Don’t think I’d ever noticed them in relation to any other administrations before they were involved with the liquidated club.

I don’t think Ledley is worth £30k a week. He is a good player but I don’t see him signing a new deal. Tomlin seems to be coming in January and I can see Ledley either signing a pre-contract or signing for Cardiff or similar calibre of club.

It’s a shame Joe looks like heading for the exit but realistcially an EPL standard player will probably only stay for about 3 years maximum these days in the SPFL.

  14. Sevcomedians in apoplectic rage as opportunity to fly into apoplectic rage over failure to observe minute’s silence is cruelly denied them:

    “The unacceptable face of Scotland

Scotland’s claim to be fighting the cancer of sectarianism and hatred took a severe dent at the weekend. Perhaps sadly, the decision not to hold a one minute silence prior to the Ross County vs Celtic match, came as no surprise to many of us….

Furthermore this is an issue which must ascend Old Firm rivalry and the often tit for tat churlish and pedantic tribalism. It is time for the Scottish press and media to stop avoiding the issue and to speak out – ignoring it will not make it go away.

It is untenable and unacceptable that men who laid down their lives in order to defeat that which is unacceptable cannot themselves be remembered and honoured due to the actions and behaviour of some in our society which is in itself – wholly unacceptable.”

    ——

“I am shocked, saddened and also very angry about what went on the Ross County.

Im sorry but the “someone forgot” excuse doesn’t wash with me. The whole club forogt? No-one remembered? Give me a break.

No, it would appear to me to have been a conscious decision made by Ross County largely driven by the fact that Celtic were the opposing team on that day.

It would be a fair statement to say that Ross County acquiesced to the will of those those anti British folk who follow celtic.”

    ——

” What really worries me is,have the [Tim]s become so powerfull that they can put pressure on clubs to do there bidding.it is no coincidence that ross countys apponants[?] were shelic.the only club in the united kingdom to constantly ignore remembence Sunday.now partick thisle, they should be ashamed.”

    ——

‘That’s the point … that these idiots seem to be missing! They only have the “right” to do anything because of our brave troops past and present who fought to give us the freedom to have any sort of “rights”.’ [And if they try to exercise them, they’ll know all about it.]

    ——

“In a land where ‘we forgot’ becomes an acceptable reason for forgetting to remember then it is clear where the priorities are… And ‘forgetting’ once becomes the trend and then the acceptated state. The slippery slope. And conveniently a process is then blamed for forgetting… Nobody gave the order to remember.”

    ——

“If the silence would have been disrespected – and probably not much ‘if’ about that – then maybe it was better to do without it at that fixture. Its too solemn a day to be screwed around with”

    ——

“Ross County’s excuse is a disgrace.

Has anyone written to St Johnstone and Partick Thistle for their explanation?

    These teams should be ashamed.”

    ——

    “F***ing apologists.

No respectful silence incase the [Tim]s spoil it. More upset by it being spoiled than by it not being respected?

Truly disgusting. Utterly appalling, irrespective of colour creed race sexuality or any other factor.

Never have i been more disgusted. And by those alleged to be our own. Hang your heads in shame, apologist traitors.”

    ——

” I also think the professional referee’s association should be asking these questions, after all it is a traditional referee’s privilege to be involved in the remembrance, and signal the silence accordingly.”

  15. Tomlin isn’t a striker. He is another one of these players like we already have (Pukki, Stokes, Sammi) who are forward players but drift deep and wide, but he is not as good. Also, his scoring stats are worse than Pukki’s and Amido’s.

  16. Action needed regarding Police Brutality in Amsterdam.

In all my years of following Celtic in Europe I’ve never seen anything like the scenes in Amsterdam on both Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, it was like watching a Danny Dyer Documentary (a poor one at that).

It all started three weeks ago now at Celtic Park, the Ajax fans added to the atmosphere with their singing, but when they started ripping up seats and throwing them, alarm bells started ringing.

There is no doubt that the Ajax supporters had a plan for their home match, they were going to antagonise and attack the Celtic Supporters as much as possible, as proved by the offensive banner they held up, the least they hoped for was a reaction that would see Celtic and their supporters vilified and charged by UEFA for misconduct.

What they got in reality was something completely different. I have seen the Police over-react a couple of times before, but I’ve never seen un-uniformed police attacking fans with such brutality as in Amsterdam.

There is no point in going into a big long tirade about the situation, what we need are answers and solutions to the problem.

On Thursday I wrote to both UEFA and the British Consulate in Amsterdam expressing my serious concerns about the whole debacle, I have also spoken to Peter Lawwell and Ronnie Hawthorn about the situation.

At this stage the most important thing to do is to get the two young Celtic supporters released and returned to their families, I spoke to Ronnie Hawthorn this morning and he’s going to contact the Consulate again.

I believe with the amount of aggression used by the police, there needs to be a political reaction. MP’s, MSP’s and MEP’s should be getting involved in the search for justice, they should be contacting their opposite numbers in Holland to demand answers, but first and foremost to demand the release of the two supporters being held in custody.

FAC is holding a meeting tonight in our club to discuss a plan of action. John Paul Taylor is holding meetings with the police and gathering any information from any supporters who witnessed incidents. You can contact John Paul at jptaylor@celticfc.co.uk

There will be more information given out in the coming days, let’s hope the two boys will be home in the next day or two, and that the real criminals are dealt with by the law.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

I hope something can be done! If we draw Ajax next year I would like to see an official boycott of the away match.

Take my word for this. There has never been a time in my life when a majority of Tims whether longstanding, sitting down or running on the spot have been happy with what is on display. It is in the nature (or nurtured) of most people.

Of course, the views of these same people change as soon as the displays have accumulated enough years. Then, they are remembered as having been wonderful.

Again, it is in the nature of most people.

  30. Celtic are expected to wrap up a deal with

Icelandic club Fram for striker Holmbert Aron

    Fridjonsson.

Fridjonsson had a successful trial at

Lennoxtown earlier this month and the Hoops

have tabled a bid, believed to be in the region

    of £120,000.

Fram are yet to agree the January move, but

are confident the switch will be rubber

    stamped soon.

Fram chairman Sverrir Einarsson told STV:

“We have received an offer. We responded to

Celtic last night and we are waiting to hear

again from them. They are not far away [in

    terms of the transfer fee].

“I think we are hoping it will happen. It would

good for him, Celtic would be a very good club

    for him.

“He was satisfied himself with the club and he

was very happy to be there [when on trial].

“He has potential. He is a special type of

player. He is a very good guy and he has his

    family behind him.

“I would be disappointed if he didn’t go all the

way in the game. I believe that he will.”

The 23-year-old, who has represented Iceland

at Under-21 level, scored 12 goals in 23

appearances for Fram in the 2013 season.
