BT’s successful £897m bid for UK Champions League and Europa League rights is one of the most significant commercial developments for Celtic in years – if we continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
This money, £299m per season, more than double the current deal, is paid directly to Uefa. What participating teams receive is directly linked to the value their domestic TV rights raise. If Scottish clubs participate, they earn 10% of the UK distribution.
Scottish Premiership TV rights are currently shared by BT and Sky but they are worth a fraction of what they went for the last time a competitor (Setanta) made a genuine challenge to Sky. It would literally take loose change from BT’s budget to remove Sky from the required list of providers for Scottish football fans. Whatever the next SPFL deal looks like, having two major players bidding should ensure it is worth a lot more money.
The same is true for English football rights. 20 years ago Sky built their UK business on the back of English Premier League broadcast rights. If BT want to supplant them in the TV market, enhance their ISP position and secure a lead in the emerging services on-demand market, English Premier League rights will be the major battleground.
BSkyB share prices is down around 10% today, reflecting the reality that they will either have to pay a whole lot more for the same rights in future, or they risk losing market share. I’d be very happy to dump Sky, which has recently resembled a tax on committed Scottish football fans without the corresponding revenue spend.

You have listed half a dozen players, out of how many? I watched Celtic play against Barca, AC Milan and Ajax at youth level. Against AC the ball was in the air every time we got it, the same against Barca and Ajax. We have a big guy up front in D

Yes it is – scribbled down a list of contents from the mag then couldn’t read my own writing! I blame the schools.
re Dulce et Decorum est – oops sorry never noticed the notes numbers.

And not at Lidl or Aldi.”
There was another club in Glasgow who had that attitude
I’ll take an attacking-mid that slots away 11 in 17 appearances.
I think Pukki will settle into playing behind the main striker the Bhoy has quick feet and an eye for a pass he is in a similar mould to Shaun Maloney.H.H.
Kojo
For the most part you talk in riddles. Maybe you think that way too.
Try and put a short and concise paragraph together.
Balde has potential to be a decent striker. I think we all get that from Neil Lennon. He is being introduced gradually.Pukki is a bit older and an international player. He needs games and for me should play every single match for us. he should be our play maker. Unlike many on this blog I can’t see the obssession with Rogic. I just don’t see what the boy can do for us. I hope to be proved wrong there. I look at Balde and see Samaras to be honest. Very similar in their style. Balde is there to replace Samaras eventually.
As for Pukki to me he is our play maker and not Rogic. maybe rogic can make that position his own in a year or two but I think Pukki is the man for now and should play every match. Dropping Pukki is not helping him.

Half a dozen more than you listed from your assumption that we are a team of giant hammer throwers- who are they? You were about to list Denny Johnstone who is the exception to the usual rule for Celtic.
You say the ball was up in the air in the match vs Milan. can I take it from that specification, that it was on the ground in the other games you saw. How in hell did we beat the mighty Ajax Youth who are coached by Overmars and Bergamp over here and only lose through missing two penalties over there.
Calvin Millar has just been world rated in his year group. The Youth coaches are doing fine and don’t have any of the predelictions, to favour hammer throwers , that have just been ascribed to them.
Denny Johnston and he is a decent player but all we did was punt and feed off the scraps. Listen Ia m not saying that big kids are nt decent players alot of them are but we overlook a lot of kids becasue of their size. In term sof Chris Sutton , what I was trying to say was , if you have strikers who need work, need to learn movement, positioning, when to run then get them someone who has been there and done that dont make do with what you have.
The reason Ajax havent done as well in recent years comes down to money, the same across dutch football in general, all their best players are taken by the Spanish, Italian or English leagues BUT the reason they are taken is because of how comfortable they are with the ball at their feet. Dundee Utd have a couple of kids coming through and all credit to them but Utd have always had a good philosophy with their player snad always teach them to play acertain way and the reason they stand out…they can control the ball, pass the ball and have no fear.
This current Celtic team is now starting to resemble the land of the giants. We are not known for our skill , our ball players, instead it is our height, physicality and our danger at set pieces….not much to show for all the kids we take through our doors is it…
If you actually went and watched some of the youth teams play then you would see the size of them, the type of player we are looking for and believe me they are not in the Lubo or JJ mould…they wouldnt have got a chance at Celtic in the current setup and that is sad. We used to be a flair team but that is gone, maybe now we have the chance to get it back but only if the right type of coaching is given to the kids now…
livibhoy
if what you say is correct re Pukki and Balde we need a striker ..
which means we entered the CL group stage with one striker ,Stokes, who was completely unproven at CL level …mainly because the manager didn`t play him

livibhoy
you say dropping Pukki won`t help…neither will playing him out of position …if he isn`t a striker
Against AC the ball was in the air every time we got it, the same against Barca and Ajax
Same in all the games.
Did we not lose to Morton in the cup a few weeks ago, yet Morton are bottom of the championship…one result doesnt make them a bad team.
The question you might want to ask is how many of those players will be playing for Ajax’s 1st team in 2 years and how many will be playing for Celtic’s….that ultimately is the role of the youth, to DEVELOP players for the 1st team isnt it?
Not everyone in Serie A or La Liga are on 60k plus a week. Most teams are skint,IMO we could buy a good quality striker from a mid table team for about £2.5-3 mil,a finished article not a project.

I have said it since the summer. When Hooper was at the club we needed another goal scorer. Now we need two.
I have always been clear on that. The other thing I have been clear on is that Stokes will not do at CL level. I am not slating the Bhoy but he has played a lot of games up fornt this seaosn and has 5 or 6 goals. Two goal scoring forwards required one at the very least needs signed in January whether we are in Europe or not.
Credit to neil for changing the formation about on Saturday. I think this suits the players we have.

Bearing in mind that the average Scot’s height has increased by 2 inches or more since I was a kid, which of the following in Celtic’s Development squads fits the description of being picked for height and brawn? Maybe best to leave defenders and keepers out of this though.

i agree
but, our transfer policy has us with one eye on resale when purchasing
sometimes players have to be bought for what they can bring to the team immediately …not how much we can get for them if they are developed and sold
the money we have wasted on substandard forwards over the last couple of years should provide sufficient evidence for this to be considered
….PFayr supports WeeOscar
I have also said that IF Neil sees him as a striker he must give the Bhoy games. He needs a run in the first team. Chopping and changing him will not help. He has CL experince and yet we didn’t start him in Amsterdam. I was shocked at that. I expect him to start our last 2 CL games and would expect to see Stokes on the bench. Unfortunatley for Anthony it hasn’t happened for him in the CL. He hasn;t been bad but hasn’t scored goals. Pukki done well against Ajax at home and I would keep playing him. Balde will get his chance. If he keeps putting the ball away he will get a run.

As always,I take your point. A discussion with your good self is always fun.
But answer me this-how many longstanding Tims of your acquaintance are happy with what is on display.
That’s longstanding Tims who remember the good old days and the bad old days.
How many?
Cos in my experience,it’s damned few.
“Not everyone in Serie A or La Liga are on 60k plus a week. Most teams are skint,IMO we could buy a good quality striker from a mid table team for about £2.5-3 mil,a finished article not a project.”
I am not sure that mid-table strikers from Spain are either cheap or sure things
If they are any good, they will opt to play for diddy teams in England. Arnoutovic moved to Stoke even though the board agreed a fee with Bremen, while Rudnevs turned us down outright.
We just dont sign from the elite leagues. They see it as a step down for their career.
Sky have to rent BT Telephone cables,so they can give you Broadband telephone calls,so as someone says on here they are both in cahoots, with one another,I cant get infinity just now from BT ,I think it will be up and running in December or early next year, when that happens I will switch over to B T.also anybody have updates in and around celtic park ,thanks.

Your style is difficult to read. Maybe as spoken word it is OK but I find myself confused reading it at times. Pukki is not a striker? Let’s hope those words come back to haunt you. I think the manager sees him doing a job there. When he does get a shot at goal he hits the target more times than most of our front men. Every shot he had at Partick Thistle was saved. The goals will come.

I have sourced a wee snippet from the AC site of the game where their Youth beat us 3:1. You can judge the accuracy of the suggestion that we are an aerial team from this. The only thing I see is that AC got a penalty decision and we were denied one. Maybe we need to coach our refs better.

Ask you sister to tell you the heights of the Celtic players she is watching.
Our bias is always to pick good players, not quite regardless of height, but giving it its due weight. For example it may be folly to persist in training a small goalie or defender whose parents are both below 5 foot but, beyond that, we select on skill and attitude mostly.
ALLY MAC 35 puts it rather well.
He has obviously seen what my sister has.
Too much emphasis on build and strength-and,yes,I do take on board your point about genetics.
But my Uncle Jim kept Bobby Lennox out of the school team-signed for Coventry, decent player-but his son would be the first to admit to not being of that class.
The huns only signed players for years based on what school they went to,and now we’re signing them on what height they might be in the future.
Ability is what we should be signing players for.

Two takes on the Gary Hooper pen at Tannadice. Stuart Dougal said at the time because DU keeper got a touch on the ball then no pen and ultimately the ref got the decision correct.
Fast forward a year Stephen Naismith goes down like a sack of spuds under a challenge from Ross TokelyStuart Dougal says it IS a pen cos even though Tokely wins the ball he fouled the player in doing so.
So there you have it. Two similar incidents and two different reasons for giving them from the totally impartial Stuart Dougal.
