Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

Right, I’ve never quite grasped all this Jock Stein/Lisbon Lions Stand stuff.

Is it the Cellic end or the Hun end fella?! :-)

Human emotions etc are very strange…..before LG signed, I wasn’t sure about him, because of his ‘attitude / perceived arrogance’ against us……then when he signs, I start saying to myself “well, he was just giving 100% for the Hibbees, and trying to wind us up (which worked :)…) ‘mon the LG, more of the same …..GOALS and ATTITUDE…hahahahahahaha

  7. So, how was it for us?

We got: One young strike (definite “project”). Another young striker with impressive goal-scoring record, but personal baggage.

Plus another young – international – midfielder.

We lost an experienced internatonal midfielder (farewell Joe!), and rid the wage bill of the disastrous Bangura.

We kept VVD, FF, and Sammy the Greek. All in all, not bad. Feels more settled and strategic than most January windows. I think as long as we can avoid selling FF and VVD in summer we will have every chance of making the CL groups again, and hopefully, with a more favourable draw, might make a bit of progress.

Over at our erstwhile rivals, meanwhile, you gotta wonder what is going on. Deliberate plan to crash the bus? Or sheer ineptitude at finally persuading the club-playing-in-blue-at-Ibrox to live within its means?

  9. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I am happy this morning for Joe Ledley He wanted out of Parkhead and he got his wish his main goal was money and Crystal Palace provided more money than Celtic. What ever Joe says in the future it was a no brainer for him.The boy was a decent enough player but not a brilliant player so Thanks and Good Luck Joe. It is a pity Sammi didnt get his move I prefer players who want away not to be mixing with our players it can unsettle them but maybe Sammi will think I wasnt given a lot of offers from other clubs and may once again consider his future at Celtic.H.H.

  10. Peter Lawell will be a happy man today.

Tony Watt scores yet another great goal against Anderlecht last night.

Every goal scored makes Hoops fans think of Paradise Lost for one of our favourite sons.

PL doesn’t care…..every goal Tony scores makes the KERCHING noise even louder in his ears.

This Bhoy will be an EPL star next season.

Where are we going to meet up after the Cup game next Saturday,I feel a bit of comfort needed, not fighting your way in to get a drink, let me know where you fancy going.

  13. Sami – quick poll

I think he will sign again for us

So not what you’d PREFER but what you PREDICT:

    Stay or go?

  14. Morning all.

Tony Watt scores again, and he took it well.

He is on fire at the moment and long may it continue.

    Ditto Callum McGregor.

When they return – hopefully not if – we should have two young players ready, willing and able to stake a claim for a regular place in the team.

They could be like two new signings.

    HH!!

  15. Cultsbhoy,

Id like to see him stay, can see that he may want to possibly wait and see how the season pans out and how qualification goes for champs league and then decide, there’s not a long wrong with that. Hes been a good servant to the club.

I think hes sensible enough to realise the grass isn’t always greener and that what he has got and achieved at Celtic is good and would probably no matter who he joined be topped. hes never going to Madrid or Barca they would be exceptions.

  17. Wondered what happened to Sally’s £10m transfer war chest?

A bit ironic they have a financially induced transfer embargo in their first full window after the SFA transfer embargo!!!

We were happy enough to take advantage when he did worse to his home town club so shouldn’t have expected anything else from Joe. I think he has been a good servant and wish him well in the relegation dog-fight he now faces…

Then again! You got lord Nelson , “I see no ships” ;)

  21. In the SPFL Celtic can afford to give away possession in their opponent’s half as they know they will get it back through tenacious pressing and a mistake by one of their players. In the CL, gifting possession through a risky play, in any part of the pitch, can prove disastrous.

That’s what most fans don’t get about Samaras. He is the archetypal modern forward – a tactical, possession-focused player, who excels in counter-attacking teams. Looking at that Celtic squad, I can’t find any attacker who is an all-rounder when it comes to domestic and European games.

Therefore it boils down to value for money. In the summer, we will have a match-fit, experienced European forward ready for some crucial Champions League qualifiers. Do we jettison him and go with what we’ve got?*

*(Any replies saying we need to buy a guaranteed CL quality striker will be greeted with a supercilious eyebrow)

Totally agree mate but he plies his trade on the spl, not the CL and that’s were he get shown up and gets some fans backs up as at times he looks clumsy. A player i loved was Jarosik but he also wasn’t suited to our domestic game and was like sammy, great in europe and clumsy and lacked confidence in domestic games.
