Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

    Enjoy your money.

I suspect the next time you are in Europe you will be on holiday.

    Unlike us.

You are after all, an ordinary Joe………..and an ex Celt.

Celtic is the biggest and best club Joe will ever play for. I would have preferred to keep him – and so would Lenny I believe. However, the modern footballer is made very aware of his career trajectory in terms of maximising the amount of cash he can make from the game. It was Joe’s main priority to get more cash and, while I like him as a player, I don’t think he warranted us pushing the boat out.

All the best Joe – thanks for the memories and good luck with the rest of your career.

  4. Hah! hadn`t realised the ” translation” had already taken place! The original “fulov ensan coosan dux” exceeded “si wotsinem etc”.

  5. This not a dig at anyone.

It saddens me when Celtic supporters say things like.

“He is just another ex Celtic player to me.”

Celtic are more than a club , our support for the most part is very special.

When players leave I want them to look back on there time at Celtic and say that it was the best club they ever played for, that the fans were amazing, and the support unrivalled .

If we just disregard them , then that bond erodes.

The Celtic players who served us well have a special place in my heart for ever.

I was never your biggest fan Joe.

You did ghost many a match.

But I always wanted you in the side for the crucial matches.

Your winner against Oldco will live with me forever.

I watched the match with the Dubai Hoops.

The drawstring on my linen trousers came undone and when I kept like a daftie to celebrate your goal, my troosers fell to my thighs.

Yip , I will remember you fondly Joe.

    Good Luck

  6. Welcome Leigh Griffiths you are one lucky Bhoy to have signed for the Hoops. I read with interest the debate during the week about his off the field behaviour and racist comment. There is no excuse and it does make me question him but I hope we can educate him as I think that is what is needed. I hope he fully embraces our club, grows up and has a wonderful career.

    We’ve just bought 25-30 goals a year I feel.

    I`m not a bit surprised

We have a Spiv CEO working to a Spiv Co agenda

Almost certainly his remit is to put TRFC into Admin and initiate the end game

That means engineering a situation where the blame for running out of cash can be put elsewhere

    Step 1

Invite the squad to “consider” the concept of a 15% pay cut without actually demanding it

    Step 2

Hawk the squad around England in the transfer window with nonsense prices on their head

    Step 3

Carefully crafted scoop to a tame SMSM rag warning the Bears that Admin is looming if they dont pony up next years ST cash two months early

    Step 4

Wail out loud that not enough fans have ponied up with the ST money forcing TRFC to go into Admin

    Step5

Pocket the ST Cash and the assets and put TRFC into Admin

    Step6 ?

    Probably

Mass resignations from RIFC Board having first transferrred cash and assets to an offshore co

Leaving the mess to be sorted out by True Blues and their friends at Hampden

Of course we were never going to spend £6m on a player

The latest spin by the unequivocal supporters is that what was meant was that we COULD spend £6m …but only on the right player …said player hitherto being unavailable/ yet to be sourced

    Bollox ..I say …but the again ..I would say that wouldn’t i

    ———————————————————————————-

Since I commented on this last night I guess you must have guys like me down as a “unequivocal supporter” whatever is meant by that! Just to re-iterate – Lenny was asked a direct question by a journo about a potential signing of Steven Fletcher :

When asked if a £6m fee would put the club off bidding for any player, Lennon replied “No, but people are quoting £6million pounds, but he (Fletcher) was bought for £12million.

“I know transfer fees change over the years but he is a youngish player still so I would imagine it might not be £6million we are talking about.

“He is a player that I think most teams in Britain would like but affordability might be a problem for us though. Could we afford to spend £6million for one player? Yes, we could.”

Asked about a potential deal for the former Hibernian and Burnley forward, Lennon added: “No, not at all. It is speculation. I don’t know where this story has come from, I honestly don’t.

“I don’t know why I am sitting here five minutes into my press conference answering questions on him.”

Nothing to do with the board, fans etc. spinning or that we would or could spend £6m on a single player. All to do with Lenny being asked a question about Fletcher.

BTW – what DO you mean by “unequivocal supporter” ?

  10. Disappointed to see Ledley go , as we need a core group in place , but money talks – at least it did to Joe.

Johansen looks a neat and tidy player , seems more a fetch and carry man than a midfield playmaker from his brief stint against Killie , lots of short passing , hopefully should link up well with KC when he drops short looking for the ball.

On LG , never impressed against us when actually watching him, still predominantly left peg will give a balance to the attack and he can shoot , hopefully the Bhoy can grasp the opportunity provided to him.

I guess the concern is that we have little cover at centre half , if we get a stupid offer for Virgil , big Steve M looks like it’s just injury after injury with the big fella , so another CB as cover for the CL qualifiers would have been good squad planning in my book.

  11. I’m delighted with Celtic’s position sitting high above the rest of Scottish football as the undisputed Kings of the game.

I’m delighted with their record breaking form.

I’m delighted that we have £millions in the bank to off set any financial issues that may surface unexpectedly.

I’m delighted we have a young improving team with more assets to sell if required.

I’m delighted because we are now a magnet club for any you aspiring undiscovered talent- we are the preferred springboard to EPL. I suspect EPL teams will start to lend us players for development soon and further underline our reputation as the club that teaches football.

I’m delighted with our Manager who has proven his critics wrong. I personally always supported Lenny but I was under no illusions he was appointed as a cheap option. I had my doubts but they no longer exist.

I’m delighted with Leigh Griffiths who make no mistake is the most prolific goal scorer of his generation in Scotland. He may become the best 23 year old in the Champion’s league!

I’m delighted that the Huns now know the have been mastered.

    I’m delighted…!

  12. Good to see the media recognising and congratulating players for honouring their contracts and not moving to another club, probably 500+ professional players in Scotland did this but only one player deserved to be singled out for this show of unprecedented dignified loyalty.

  13. It`s a strange life for footballers judging by the actions of the transfer window. Having to move with limited notice can`t be ideal.

I`m disappointed that Joe has left, a first pick for his position and probably the only true midfielder at the club. His display against Iniesta and Xavi at Celtic Park last season was epic. I suppose this means that Charlie is a midfielder now. :-)

Good luck to the new Bhoys!

  14. When Joe Ledley was a free agent back in 2010 he had a similar choice between premiership football at perennial relegation strugglers Stoke (under Pulis) and Celtic. I’m unsure but I believe at the time there were reports Stoke were also offering more money, which makes the comparison even more acute. He chose Celtic at that time.

Now the choice has come up again and after 3.5 years with us he’s decided to try the other option. Fair play to the guy and best of luck, I think with him in the team and Pulis in charge they’ll do alright.

  16. With Griffiths I believe we have bought one of the best if not best Scots born players playing currently.

He has an incredible workrate. He is a great goal scorer AND a scorer of GREAT goals!

He has without question a troubled and unacceptable past, I hope he has matured and that is al behind him. I believe in rehabilitation – let his rehabilitation commence.

Pity the ghost of Jim Farry is still around and he can’t play on Sunday against the Saints.:-)

Hopefully we will see more of Johansen on Sunday.

Good bye Joe, thank you and good luck. He has joined a manager that rates him very highly. He gets him at the second attempt after turning down Stoke to join us. He should leave with our best wishes and hopes that he stays in the premiership and possibly a move to a bigger club in a year or so. Surprised Paul Lambert didn’t come calling as he needs experience in his young team.

Good Morning Bhoys, Joe gone and will be missed and as been expressed already this morning, He will miss us, If the monies there they will go for it, Their careers are fleeting so i can’t blame him. Another one to watch for on MOTD. Hope he does well.

I also believe we are stronger after this window, Next season get Tony back with his head straight and we have a great strike force.

Me and the wee ghuy used to sit in the Jock Stein upper, smack bang right in the centre. Both corners to the right and left of us had smallish groups starting the singing, in the event of section 111 growing and becoming synonymous with the GB, these 2 singing groups disappeared, my thoughts were that they had left these parts of the ground and became one in 111.

In the last couple of home games, there has been singing started from both these sections again…I think this would back your point re the GB.

Lovely point about Joe and the Knox family.

Some people on here take note about the greedy bassa!!!

  20. With Callum MacGregor and Tony Watt banging in goals the manager will have options next year. They are our assets. I hope both have a future at Celtic. MacGregor I believe will! Tony will have to show that he understands what is required to play in the HOOPS!

  21. Tiny Tim

I don`t think the ” he`s just an ex-Celt” guys really feel that. They are just covering their disappointment that anyone would want to leave us. No shame in that. The vast majority of ex-Celtic players are remembered with affection.

    JJ Cheerio for now.

  22. Sandy Easdale showing the class and dignity expected from a Morton turned Rangers fan.

Seriously though, got thinking about the permanent raging scowl on his face every time he is photographed or interviewed. Is he typical of a Rangers fan?

A young man who used to come into a Midlands pub I once frequented, had the impression that all Rangers fans were permanently raging…..permarage he called it.He spent a few years in the Royal Navy with Deadclub fans and had a very low opinion of them.He was a Villa fan with a soft spot for Celtic because of his dislike of Ragers.

This is a common perception of the typical Hun by English football fans.Permanently scowling and full of rage.Manchester 2008 definitely reinforced this stereotype down here.

The funny thing is that the Orcs think they are loved and respected in England. From experience I always find the opposite view towards them.

Seriously… What’s not to like right now?

Any Celtic fan who thinks we can make a bigger dent in CL against teams who buy players for £50m+ is living on another planet.

I’ll take year in year out titles and entry to Europe with money in the bank for the rest of my life.

I would love the club to be exploring entry to another league but in the meantime let the History books show we are the true footballing force in Scotland who did it all above board against rivals who cheated at every twist n turn…
