Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

A few players loaned out and probably the highest wage earner off the books

Can’t imagine Griffiths and Johansen wages combined will be much more than half of Ledley’s

Add the transfer fee for Ledley and wage savings …very financial astute window

Does it set us up for the CL ….perhaps …but only if we don’t sell any of our better players in the summer

As for Ledley …he was always going to leave …what he does…in fact we probably did well to get anything for him

Leaving CFC for Palace …says it all

My only issue is that I feel we wanted to keep Ledley and we can easily be out priced by shite teams for wages and fees. Going back not so long that would never happen.

Agree on Leigh but will he be relaxed? All the pressure is on him now can he handle it? Hope so but that’s my only worry. If he can handle it I expect him to be better than Gary Regarding the youths a few of them are on loan now. It’s no going to happen. But there’s always hope look at Darnell. Hail Hail

Its natural to be nervous, but as soon as he scuffs one in or sends one top corner he’ll be fine. Don’t forget he out scored Hooper when playing for Hibs who were up against it. I cant see him doing any different, he has a great record and I expect it to get better with us.

Yeh its a shame as i dont feel we need to be buying as many imports when we have a great youth set up and within it great young players who with game time would grow and grow.

  6. Was the fee for Joe Ledley confirmed anywhere? This time yesterday £800,000 was being mentioned but by late evening there were even higher figures bouncing around twitter.

to the people who didn’t believe me when I said we would never spend £5M on a player this window – all I can say is – you fell for it again – and – I telt ye na na na na na

Twitter was like a ‘wake’ last nite regarding ledley. Just don’t get it at all. Joe thanks for your time here you scored a few goals but enjoy your new venture doubling your wages at the mighty crystal palace.. Players come and go Celtic remain. It’s not as if we have just lost Paul mc stay!

Gary hooper tweeted him ‘congrats boss see you soon’

Your right gary in a relegation battle, and obscurity for the next few years you’ll be seeing plenty of him. Not that big of a loss in my eyes. It’s the bigger picture I worry about. Players like Forster, Matthews, will follow suit this summer and another rebuilding job puts our champions league qualification at major risk!

I’m quite high up in Hamilton so not entirely sure how relevant this will be for Strathie Park level, but there’s only a very light covering of snow up here.

Good luck I’m having another fag instead :-)

  10. Leigh has scored some great goals wherever he’s been roughly 1 in 2. I expect similar with us. I personally think he’ll be brilliant in Europe. As I said if he can screw the nut I think he’s found his home

Of course we were never going to spend £6m on a player

The latest spin by the unequivocal supporters is that what was meant was that we COULD spend £6m …but only on the right player …said player hitherto being unavailable/ yet to be sourced

    Bollox ..I say …but the again ..I would say that wouldn’t i

So how much did Joe go for, £800K or £2.5M? Time will tell. He goes with my best wishes as he could have run down his contract to his advantage. I rated Joe and was always pleased to see him in the team BUT he will never play for a bigger club than the Glasgow Celtic FC.

Good luck Joe I do hope you do not get relegated.

Welcome Leigh ‘the Hitman’ Griffiths who I think will score for fun in the Hoops. If his feet are as prolific as another part of his body he’ll be filling ‘bags’ instead of emptying them.

Joe goes with my best wishes – I liked him as a player and a person – but now I’m afraid he is just another ex Celtic player

“Nothing sinister just a comment, but now you mention it. :-

Most of us were there before the GB.

Most of us were there during the GB

Most of us will be there when the GB are a distant memory.

Just like the Jungle Bhoys ( No disrespect ) they will fade into insignificance”

    ————

You make it sound as if the GB were a group of folk who had never been to Parkhead prior to 2006 and will now never be seen again.

What you need to understand is that many in the group have been Celtic supporters for years, home, away and in Europe. Yes that dispels the theory that it’s made up of spotty teenagers.

They were formed to combat the libraryesque atmosphere that existed in the stadium at the time, that and that alone, was their primary mandate.

These were Celtic supporters who wanted to do what it says on the tin, support Celtic.

Now we’re not debating any of the stuff that came afterwards so that’s for another time.

By the way we won’t be there after them mate. They haven’t gone away you know.

Totally agree. I have as much chance of playin for England as Gary hooper does but! These players are never gony turn down the chance of doubling their wages to play and live in the bright lights of London no matter what club it is to stay with us.. Fraser and big Virgil will go to a top 6 or 8 team in EPL this summer for big money I reckon. That worry a me more! HH

    Soon my friend, soon :-)

Ps one wee thing I’d say about Joe Ledley, and yes I’m also one of those who’ll never understand the sense (finances aside) of leaving Celtic, never mind to Crystal Palace, but anywhere! More than any other Celtic player, he did the most to highlight the plight of Wee Oscar Know. He was the guy that Stephen met in London while Joe was receiving treatment for an injury and then was prepared to be photographed with a wee blue wristband highlighting Oscar’s struggle.

I know the Knox family will always be grateful to Joe Ledley.

  24. 16 roads- I agree, if both of these guys can show maturity and professionalism both on and off the park I think there is potentially a very exciting partnership there.

I caught a bit of Snyde last night, they could not be any more negative on Griffiths if they tried, (on the other hand try to argue Kris Boyd would be an excellent buy- Kris Boyd…. Kris effin Boyd!!!!!!..do they want to empty the remaining half of Celtic Park??)

The negativity of some posters on here can match them, mind you

  25. A few on here suggesting that Joe Ledley will be playing in the Championship next season.I think if anyone studies Crystal Palace’s results since Tony Pulis took over as manager,a few months back, then they will see there is a less than even chance of them going down.

Gary Hooper,on the other hand, has a great chance of playing Championship football next season if one studies the last four league opponents of his club,Norwich.Their run in is completed by Man City,Liverpool,Chelsea and Arsenal.Dont think even Delia could inspire more than 2 points from that set of fixtures.

Greenpinata is very wrong, but the GB need to concentrate on supporting Celtic, entertaining / galvanising fellow fans, and keeping infiltrators out of their ranks…….

Welcome Leigh Griffiths, now become a Celt son.

I personally think a decent window, 3 players in, 2 real 1st team players and a potential striker with good reports, also many youths out for experience.
