Celtic and Newco income, the commercials are key

178

Any team can win any game, but sustained success in football is all about money; how much you earn and how you spend it.  Everything went wrong for Celtic last season and they currently trail Newco by four points, although there are reasons for optimism.  Where the clubs sit structurally and financially will always be a greater determinant of long-term success.  We are going to have a look this week at both clubs’ accounts, what indicators they reveal and how they are run differently.

For a season when Celtic were trophy-less, exited the Europa League, Scottish Cup and League Cup earlier than Newco, you would expect the clubs incomes in season 2020-21 to balance out for the first time.  Other things being equal, Newco should have earned more, particularly through their extended run in Europe.

Instead, Newco undershot Celtic’s £60.781m turnover by a clear £13m.  The difference was all in the commercial department.  Celtic’s deals with Adidas and JB Sports brought merchandising sales to £22.609m.  This figure excluded “other commercial activities”, which were noted along with multimedia income.

When announced, Newco made great play of their first kit and retail deal after parting company with Sport Direct.  However, their total figure for sponsorship, advertising, commercial and retail was £9.278m, £13.331m less than Celtic’s.  Not that this inhibited their spending, the apple never falls far from the tree.

If you recall, Newco ended up with Castore after asking bids for their kit contract online.  This was an indication that winning attractive deals is not as simple as those who have never concluded a deal like this could imagine.  Celtic’s commercial team landed Nike 8 years ago, then improved their deal with New Balance.  The move to Adidas in 2020 was a commercial game changer (it also landed before the reality of what lay ahead was revealed).

They were able to demonstrate performance and fine-tune a route to market with JD Sports.  As a consequence, despite shops being closed for much of the season, merchandising income rose by £7.6m.  To achieve this, you need to attract and retain staff capable of performing on a level off the field that Kyogo would be pleased with on-field.  At the top of the page I wrote “commercials are key”.  It would be truer to say an ability to attract and retain high-performing professionals is key.  You cannot do this if you are the football equivalent of an aggressive fantasist.

This is not the sexy part of football, but it probably determines where more trophies end up than differences in scouting resource.  Corporate governance up next.

IMHO if Gerard gets the chance, he’s off. He obviously knows they are a financial basket case and needs to get out

    ———

He would also double his money at least and we are talking serious money. £5m per year minimum at AV. If they sell him a vision and offer him the job which I think they will, it comes down to bottle and whether or not he backs himself to do whats needed to get taken seriously at Liverpool. My hunch is he’ll stay and to be honest I’m not that fussed either way.

  3. Back to Basics,

Why are you asking such a silly question.

Nobody here knows who made the noise, whether they were Scots or Irish, whether they were kids or adults, whether they are tough ghuys or whether they were pissed or coked up, whether they would attend a Remembrance Event elsewhere and if they did whether they would make noise or not,

So how on earth do you expect someone to respond to the question.

At a wild guess I suspect they were probably younger kids, possibly bevied up, I imagine they would be unlikely to attend a Remembrance Event elsewhere, therefore the question of making noise there would not arise.

But as I say that is a guess,

Q2 – For those who disrupted the minute silence on Sunday, how many of you are planning to do the same this Sunday at a remembrance event out with a football stadium?’

    ###

And how many of those who insist that everyone observe the silence will be arsed to attend an actual Remembrance Day event?

  5. “The original concept was to fund the care of disabled veterans”

Does that alone not show the hypocritical nature of Poppy Day ( or Poppy Weeks now)?

We are regularly told that `these brave men gave their lives for our freedom` but the Governments who ordered them to give their lives relied on well intended people buying a poppy once a year to help support the unfortunate veterans who survived the horrors of the conflicts but were left with terrible disabilities.

PS The hypocrisy to which I referred was that of the Government`s and not the many well intentioned folk who buy the poppies.

  10. Sorry but I need to ask this Poppy question:

Why do people say that they wear the poppy to remember those who died in war? Surely what they are really doing, at the very least, is wearing it to show others that they are remembering?

    An Dun …

    Pray allow me to elaborate.

Let’s assume those interrupting minute silences at football do so from a deeply held conviction.

How many of this group have sufficient courage of their convictions to interrupt commerorations elsewhere (where they cannot hide behind the generic “Celtic fans” label and will be individually identifiable) ?

    —-

I’m still genuinely struggling with your thought process here. The lads that broke the silence were attending a football match and didn’t care for the minute’s silence being thrust upon them. What makes you think they’ve an issue with other people attending a specific remembrance event ?

A lot of people over here wouldn’t care for an Orange order parade passing their front door but that doesn’t mean they’re heading over to the shankill road to protest at an Orange parade, you know what I mean ?

  13. ernie

Do you really believe that Celtic Park without the Green Brigade would be a very quiet place?

  14. When people say that politics has no place at football matches, I think they should give that view a little more consideration. There is no comparison between WATCHING football and SUPPORTING a football team.

Think about the reasons why you support Celtic and then tell me that politics does not play a significant part in that support.

Like it was for the few seasons prior to the GB emerging and like it was during the recent 30 minute magnum silentium.

  16. ernie

Thanks for the reply but another question is now necessary !

As the GB were founded in 2006, are you saying Celtic Park was quiet before then?

Also, I felt the quiet nature in the ground for the GB`s silent protest was at least in part offering tacit support of the GB`s protest.

He’ll stay. Because he ain’t getting offered the job. We won’t have long to wait, Villa will almost certainly have their man in place after the international break. I’ll be amazed if they go for Gerrard. A man that has overseen a £50 million loss over three seasons to win one trophy in Scotland.

  19. HOT SMOKED on 8TH NOVEMBER 2021 10:17 PM

The place had been dead for a few seasons and it was getting worse. Fans getting older, a change in the social status of the fans, all seated stadium, and everyone sitting in the same seat game after game, season after season probably all played a part. Whatever the reasons it had got pretty dire and something had to happen.

A lot of people are in denial about it because they regard it as personally insulting and it challenges their views of themselves as fans. But it’s true.

  20. The booing yesterday during the minutes silence never came from the GB, but from fans at the back of the stand.

Anyone know why the Scottish rugby team weren’t wearing a poppy on their shirts.

  21. DRNIE LYNCH

Why are you blaming the GB?

How do you know it was they who disrupted the minute’s silence?

Why do you blame the GB for everything? Do you have any proof?

  22. Will there ever be a November when there won’t be a Poppy Debate,

With no Celtic game for a fortnight this place could go shit stir crazy.

Will check in tomorrow maybe a 2 week sabbatical might be good for my mental Health.

  23. ernie

Thanks again. I returned to Scotland in 2007 and don`t really recall what it was like before then so I have only witnessed a GB inspired Celtic Park.

  24. The atmosphere at Celtic Park gradually got worse after the all seated stadium came into existence.Apart from scum games, and European nights,it was dreadful. The GB have brought noise, colour, and some great new songs to the stadium.

Could not imagine the place without them now.

  25. I’m in An Dun’s camp re. Gérard – he ain’t going anywhere in the EPL.

The facts are that in a backwater league (standard English viewpoint) and with a bloated squad paid for with massive debt, the mighty Gérard won the sum total of one trophy out of nine that his club was entered for domestically.

Are the custodians of EPL clubs so fixated with a ‘name that they would ignore that record and take a chance on him? Remember they sacked their manager because they concluded that by keeping him in place they were risking losing their place in the money pot of the EPL. Why would they put a rookie with a poor managerial record in place and continue with that risk or even enhance that risk?

The enthusiastic slavering over this on STV news tonight was embarrassing for anyone with a brain, but of course that excludes the great unwashed.

When the same nonsense was being spouted linking Gérard with Newcastle I had a wee bit fun with a former follower of the dead club ( who now has nothing to do with Sevco). I gave him the choice of two managers for Newcastle: first manager has won one trophy out of nine, second manager has won five trophies out of nine. Graciously he accepted that the second manager would be the obvious choice, but went a bite puce when I told him that was Lenny.

  26. Delicious irony in how Sevconians love the poppy so much when their club has literally zero of it.

The military gun firing at the start of their Ross County game was a ‘Wag the Dog’ moment of the first order.

  27. QUAD, more delicious irony.

Question to a Sevvie: Who brought on the gun to the park?

    Answer from Sevvie: the Army

    Who pays the army?

    The government.

Where did they get the gun?

    They bought it.

Where did they get the money?

    The government.

Where do the government get the money to give to the army?

    From taxes.

Weren’t EBTs an illegal tax-avoiding scam run by Rangers?

  28. Poppy or no Poppy Thousands of servicemen and women gave there lives fighting facisim in Germany and Japan even Celtic supporters gave there lives,That mob that hiss and boo when decent fans observe a minutes are the most bunch of ignorant morons who should be ashamed of themselves, personally I would ban them for life ,and another thing I can’t get a away ticket but the Green Brigade seem to get hundreds of tickets for every away game ,that needs looked into and stopped immediately.

  29. EMERALDBEE – bang on the money, so to say.

Wearing the poppy is a personal choice and people can have the freedom to embrace or eschew it.

    Very good news! 👏

Man utd, Man City, Spurs, and 2 other English clubs start to remove seats and get terraces back.

All seating was a Thatcher trick.

Thirty plus years of ‘all seating’ has led to a docile society in so many ways.

    Viva la Bundestag! ⚽ 🏆 🚩

    https://talksport.com/football/978249/man-utd-man-city-tottenham-chelsea-cardiff-safe-standing-premier-league/

A Green Brigade and their magical gifts, properly led guided and educated, by a savvy socialist leader, and the GB would be fit to control Celtic FC, and they’ll lead a new mindset that will seek to strengthen what unites us, and how to review long held beliefs that shouldn’t be forgotten, or moved on from, but weighed up against what is relevant at that time, but who we are cannot be changed, but it shouldn’t be allowed to stop us from building what might become, the possibility of new, and unexpected bridges were we previously thought would be impossible, were Mary Lou wants an Ireland were all who live there will be treated as equals, no more “Us v Them” it’ll be all of us. If Ian Paisley can sit down and work with Martin McGuinness, then the Green Brigade can work it out if the Blue Order, all it takes is the bravery to put the other persons shoes on, and we’ll see things about ourselves that we never knew existed, vice versa, If circumstances change, then our opinions should be reviewed in that aspect, for example, i was once asked by a person from the other side of the divide so to speak, “Why we Celtic fans are never seen outside in the car park, demanding the removal of the PLC for the abuse issue?” and if your a Blue Order guy, maybe you’ll be thinking “These Tims are ok with the abuse issue, they never protest about that” and the Blue Order person would have a point, wouldn’t they? Just think about the anger, rage, hate, fear, or, mistrust about Tims because of what that one issue might project into a Blue Order persons mind, as I said, I’ve been asked before about this a long time ago, and quite simply couldn’t explain why fans hadn’t took to the car park about this. I had no answer. This issue that I’ve highlighted, is to illustrate how just one simple, disgusting, or confusing issue, can fill someone’s mind with, as I said, anger, rage, hate, fear, or mistrust about us Tims, and how many more tangled issues are there in the minds of confused folk, on both sides of the divide?

I’m thinking about reconciliation. I may be a dreamer etc.

I’m not Auldheid, I couldn’t lace the man’s boots, but its his patience that would be needed to reconcile the divide, but as I’ve said it would be difficult, very difficult to “end” the evil of Old Firmism.

So for me, there are two landscapes open to us in the immediate future.

    1. The Tims and Billys sit round a table, Green Brigade etc, Blue Order etc, we wear each others shoes, not physically, but you know what I mean, educate each other as we go, and if we reach the point were we’ve both agreed on a lot of stuff, and looked at some of our other hard to decide stuff after the agreements and realised that we don’t need certain aspects of what is in our make up, and we start to realise that what we actually agree on will make politicians very wary of what we’re capable of becoming, after we simply iron out wrinkles, mend the bridges, and be agreeable where, if, possible, and we remove irritation from each other, that’ll take a lot of patience, work, and hopefully agreements, which will allow blues & greens to at least, coexist in peace, and not represent a death threat to each other, but actually turned the tables on politicians who secretly prefer that, Tims and Billys are at each others throats, whilst fly politicos get richer, even flier football directors, getting even richer, whilst Tims and Huns fight over unwanted crumbs.

    Science fiction?

    Probably.

    2. I fear a north of Ireland scenario is racing its way to Scotland and minority Celtic fans, Catholic, Irish descendants, could become even more of a minority when Ireland is reunified, which will probably be in 2 years, and will lead to an Ulster Scots exodus, mainly to Scotland.

If this comes to pass, there will be no possibility of a independent Scotland happening, with a huge unionist influx, I think Arlene Foster has already chosen Fife as her destination, so she’s probably ahead of the curve about this.

    But what about us Tims?

How would we approach this scenario?

The possibilities as I see it is, another science fiction maybe option, the other option, just a scary likelihood.

    1. The UK govt, and the Irish/EU govts, agree to buy ALL of the homes of Ulster Scots on the island of Ireland, and ALL of the homes in UK belonging to, descendants of Irish immigrants/refugees.

The respective govt’s to make it crystal clear that, there will be no debates about the issue, both of these communities are in other countries wrongly. The govt officials today can’t be held accountable for what happened 200 to 800 years ago, but they can shape the future with the purchases of these homes, then switching the communities over and, going some way by directly addressing both communities, reminding them that the present day govts will be here to make this work, not give it a deaf ear like decades of govts have done up until now, a possibility might be to bring in a “temporary” basic income sceme based on living wage levels, and provide support for both communities like a furlough scheme until they are settled and up and working again, and you never know, maybe forge a reconciliatory spirit were both islands are able to work constructively together in a never seen before way, and before you know it, suggestions would emerge for a tunnel from Larne to Stranraer to be built, in this new “Celtic Sea”, “Celtic islands” venture, maybe not “Celtic” but something like that. In terms of the exodus the Irish descendants will be going to isle of Ireland via London to Dublin route, and the Ulster Scots will be leaving island of Ireland, going to Britain via Stranraer route.

If the above happens it’ll be unbelievable but, be the right thing to do. 🙏 ✌

    Who knows?

    Anthony Ralston CSC 👏 🍀

  31. martin o'seville on

If the “Exodus” above happens, Celtic fans will be real Irish, not plastic Paddy’s.

Rebuild Celtic Park in an agreement with Casement Park initiative?

And for Rangers fans and Ulster Scots, finally, every day will be the 12th of July.

    Yay.

  32. fourstonecoppi on

While i think part of the ground should be non seated, a large/significant section should remain seated.

The ground is not just for the young team..wit aboot us old yins, the kids, the families and the disabled etc etc.

I’m sure some remember years ago the kids, ie me, would be clinging on to the girders at the back of the ‘Cellic end’ trying to see the game or if ye coudn’t get a spot on the girders being shoved around by drunken foul mouthed morons who didn’t give a flying fek to shouts of ‘watch the wean’.

So seated for us old yins, the kids, the families and the disabled ……we get to see the game!

    PS

Also oxygen masks under the seats cos the time i climb to the tap of the stadium i’m gaspin’.
