Celtic-Atletico programme as 40,000 hearts beat as one

639

Our  unofficial Celtic v Atletico Madrid match programme is now available.  We preview tomorrow’s match as well as the other game in our group between Rennes and Udinese, as well as a look back 37 years to that infamous game against Atletico in the European Cup semi-final.

European nights have always been special in my Celtic supporting time.  When I was a boy they would fill Celtic Park whereas it was predominantly empty on domestic duty.  The modern era brought great Uefa Cup and Champions league moments but for a while, even at the peak of our Champions League prowess, the stadium lost something to corporate interests.  I remember watching fans walk out of the stadium with 10 minutes on the clock when we were drawing 0-0 with Milan!

Tomorrow night will be more like the great days I remember, when every soul inside the ground was plugged into the nervous anticipation that pumps through all our veins.

Atletico Madrid occupies a similar place in our history to Rapid Vienna.  If you were around during the 70s and 80s, when these two clubs eliminated Celtic on their way to European finals, by violence and dishonesty respectively, games against these clubs will have an added dimension.  Two years ago we finished above a decent Rapid team in the Europa League group stage who had already dumped Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa.  When Scott McDonald’s goal went in I raised my arms and inadvertently punched the safety ladder at the back of the North Stand, the cut knuckles and bruising lasted weeks.  It was a stupid incident but captures the, 40-odd-thousand-people-one-heartbeat, phenomenon that we get to experience too seldom in our lives.

I’m going to look out the hoops tonight, been ages since I’ve worn them.  Bring on Atletico, Falcao ‘n’ all.

No buddy but from what I can gather he has a propensity for no turning up so I may have to wait :)

Reading Paul67’s header reminded me of the 95 cup final v Airdrie.

I had gone for pies etc and was returning to my seat laden with a large tray which included teas and bovrils.

As I moved along the row, looking over my shoulder to watch the game, big Pierre rose like an eagle to stick it in the pokey. Naturally, all Tims rose as one but sadly the fella with a large dome in the row in front collided with the lip of the tray and sent the contents all over yours truly, bovril, teas et al. My t-shirt offered meagre protection and when I removed seconds later, my chest was already the colour that fat Sally’s face is these days.

My reply to the medical people, who incidentally were extremely helpful but concerned was along the lines of, “Are ye blinking mental, we’ve no won a trophy in 6 years and you want me to miss it??!! Eh naw”.

    Didn’t know you’d changed jobs.

Hope all’s well with you and your family.

Must catch a pint with you soon.

I’ll be in town tomorrow with younger daughter (her school is closed) doing a bit of pressie buying.

  3. From Scottish Law Reporter, this is their take on Christine Grahame: “Crown Office investigates Holyrood Justice Boss Christine Grahame over election expenses, while allegations of sectarian remarks remain unanswered.”

    See: http://scottishlaw.blogspot.com/2011/11/crown-office-investigates-holyrood.html

Interestingly the long-time adviser and media officer for Grahame who blew the whistle, Hirst, has had his “Holyrood Confessions” blog taken off the internet but SLR has a cache of the articles.

It is certainly worth a read and even if only a fraction of what Grahame is reported to have said re RCs then she is not fit to be in Holyrood let alone in a position to influence new laws on sectarianism. Perhaps she would/should be the first to be prosecuted under them?

  8. Just over 12,000 fans at the Hamburg v huns friendly tonight. A lousy crowd for two so-called “friendly” clubs IMHO.

Hopefully, part of the huns fee will be dependent on the crowd receipts as normally German fans pay relatively low ticket prices for matches.

  9. On an entirely different subject as the site is quiet tonight I’m a big fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books.

Said to her indoors that Clint Eastwood in his younger days would have been a good Reacher.

Emdy want to suggest an alternative?

  11. Bhoys,

I am very well aware of this being BIG STORY being hidden but when the president of the SFA came out last week and commented on keeping a watching brief on Hertz. Is it really beyond our ingenuity to question the SFA directly why their own rules are not being applied ?

When it is public knowledge ?

Why no point deductions or fines ?

Why can hertz and the huns get away with it but not dunfermline ?

Why does our club meekly and quietly accept this ?

Why is the president of the SFA only concerned about salaries and not PAYE and NIC.

We should be asking publicly why he is not raising these questions with UEFA ?

Our subservient role is becoming highly revealing.

    Apply the rules .

I think you’ll find that if everything she has said turns out to be true, then she is perfectly suited to sit in Holyrood :-(

Wouldn’t disagree too much on that team getting a run of games

We need some consistency in selection let the guys coming back fight for their places

Agree Lesley looking good at left back

  17. I was at the home game v Racing Club at Hampden.

A disgusting shower. We shouldn’t have gone over there.

Atletico Madrid were similar in ’74.
