Celtic do enough to ensure return of league title

398

Having been ahead only to be pegged back for the second time in a fortnight against Newco, there was a deflated feel inside Celtic Park at the end of the game yesterday.  After taking the lead through a Daizen Maeda – Jota combination, Celtic created enough chances to put the game out of sight.  They didn’t.

Newco equalised with the best move of the game and thereafter had a hatful of opportunities to win the game and cut the deficit at the top of the table.  They also failed in this objective.  Celtic remain six points clear with three games remaining, it is now only a matter of when, not if, they will win back their title.

Just as at Hampden last month, Celtic opened poorly, unable to pass through a man-for-man Newco press.  The first chance of the game fell to Ryan Kent, who ghosted past Anthony Ralston but did not make a clean contact on the cross, his effort drifted wide.

Maeda failed to make an impact with his first two crosses from the left but his third was drilled into the six-yard box.  TV replays showed Borna Barisic repeatedly check over his shoulder for an attack by Jota, but the Portuguese only had eyes for the cross, which he converted without too much trouble from the Newco left back, who will now be familiar with Celtic wingers running from behind him to score.

Newco took control of the game after the interval until Giorgos Giakoumakis and Nir Bitton replaced Matt O’Riley and Kyogo on the hour.  In the minutes that followed, Celtic were on top, but could not solidify their lead.  That period ended when Newco strung seven passes together inside the Celtic half that released Sakala with a clear shot at goal inside the box, which he finished well.

With home advantage and a significantly lighter playing schedule, you may have expected Celtic to finish the game the stronger, but the opposite was true.  Sakala hit the post and had another great chance as Newco piled forward looking for a goal that would keep their title chances alive.

It was a great game of football but by no means a classic Celtic performance.  Still, the result ensured the league title will return to Celtic Park for the 10th time in 11 seasons.

  2. I’m thinking that one game per week is having the opposite effect on the players than I expected. There’s no shortcut to match fitness – it takes games both for fitness, intensity and teamwork. Training can’t substitute for competitive games. The boss also has less opportunity for squad rotation and keeping all the players in prime condition. The sharpness we saw in the middle of the season is not quite there. Looking forward to getting the league wrapped up so that the bhoys can relax. Hopefully next season we can go deeper in Europe with the addition of 3 or 4 new faces.

Hats off to big Carl who was excellent yesterday.

  3. Getting away from the game for a moment , when in the name of god are Celtic board going to do something about this BBC , they allow that corporation to bad mouth our club , and it’s fans without letting up . Using forums like this we get to know the feelings of every fan on this matter the result being each and every one of us who buy a season ticket , Dons a hoops jersey ,wears a Celtic scarf are to a fan sick fed up with it . How this is allowed to go on is a scandal , filling there studio with ebt recipients , near wall to wall true blue pundits with not a piece of neutrality coming from them all only rangers rangers and more rangers . We Celtic fans can do nothing they know it but our club doing something can . I remember sir Alex telling a tv station not to come back and newspaper journalists the same . But it goes on against us non stop because it’s never challenged ,it’s sectarian bais. Same with the press anti Celtic to a man yet they are catered to with an open door to Celtic park . It’s over time it was nipped in the bud . Are our suits something to hide are the press sitting on something the board are afraid of .

The huns looked battle hardened …..which comes with playing decent European opposition…

But I honestly thought just before hun goal…we were getting well on top …how maeda ballooned over from 10 yards beats me !!…game over

I kept saying we are going to rue these fecking chances…..anyway I was delighted with the final outcome….what a great position to be in !!

You’re talking about a Board that is content to endorse and support a business owned by a director of its main rival. A business that is the source of wealth used to keep the rival in business.

The idea that they’ll do anything about media bias is a bit fanciful.

    “For those in Scotland

anyone in our leagues you think we should sign ?”

    —————————————-

    Hi Saint:

Good shout on exploring other markets. I’m not in Scotland but I would start with CCV and Jota. They are on £18,000 and £7,000 a week respectively, mere pittances which should be substantially augmented.

I would also look at the U.S. market. The game is exploding over here, and young U.S. players are now in the EPL, German and Austrian Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue I and Eredivisie. The World will be taken aback at the talents of Pulisic, McKennie, Dest et al in Qatar.

We have ( at least temporarily ) CCV, the Old Firm have Sands. I know Tim Weah did not do too well with us, but he is lighting it up at Lille.

If we lose CCV and Jota with Lawwell like pennypinching, it will be a huge step backwards, meaning that if we replace them with equal talent we are merely treading water. We need to keep improving, and on an upward trajectory, and Nicholson needs to show us he has the cojones to support it.

  8. ERNIE LYNCH – Well said. Does anyone think for one moment the Huns would use Parks of Hamilton buses if the owner was our main shareholder?

Though the financial cost of the bus may be small change, it is a highly visible endorsement of Mr Parks brand.

is CCV good enough to make the USA squad for Qatar ?

  11. Next season I hope Ange drops the silly sentimentality that has been a feature at our club for the last decade.

Wanna play from the back you gotta say goodbye to Joe Hart, Ralston, Taylor and Starfelt (as the LCB) and rebuild it.

Wanna play quick & brave transitions in midfield then it’s goodbye (or at least limit them to the diddy games) to Bitton, McCarthy and Rogic as starters.

I hope our scouts are looking in “the late teens, having been hoarded by a big Euro giant” market.

  12. To win a League any year is what we live for as Fans but to win it this year after last year’s meltdown & with direct access to Champion’s League & the guaranteed income that brings is absolutely mega.

The fact that we also stop the Huns getting their greasy paws on the CL loot is crucial in keeping them in their place.

I am ecstatic at how the Season has gone but there is still a huge job of work to be done for next Season,

Think Nicholson has backed Ange and he will need to back him even more for next Season.

However just now all I can think about is next Saturday, Por Cierto said it first right now it’s all about results, just win next Saturday Celtic & let the party begin.

  13. I know you don’t want to hear this……………”rangers” are a pretty good team.

  14. Will history repeat itself, BR amassed a small fortune from CL football but the suits decided to stash it in the bank instead of spending it on the park, will they do the same with Ange, I hope not but I for sure won’t be holding my breath that they will back him to the tune that needs be for euro football, and as ever it doesn’t have to be transfer fees, there are always plenty players to be had for very little or free, just wages to weigh in for.

PS, the first person that gave the ball away yesterday was CalMac and not Reo.

Reading that European fixture schedule is also impacted by World cup, so some games are only a week apart rather than 2.

Thanks for your reply , I am aware of that Ernie . But why what causes our board to do that to put up with tv and media bias against our team , and supposedly there team . I long for the day we don’t see any old firm fans in Celtic park the day we flush out the laptop loyal , and the Bigot Broadcasting Company . Cheers pal

I doubt very much that CCV will be selected for Qatar, but you never know when injuries will play a part in selection. Walker Zimmerman and Miles Robinson have been the center back pairing for the US recently, and have compiled quite a few clean sheets. The others I see quoted are as follows:

    John Brooks

    Erik Palmer-Brown

    Aaron Long

    Mark McKenzie

    Chris Richards

Richards and Brooks play in the Bundesliga, so face top class opposition every week, and many of these center backs are taller and faster than CCV, so they have a clear advantage.

The players we have are being asked to play a footballing formation and style alien to them. They will all improve as individual players and as a collective unit the longer they play it. In the first 10 months they have been able to challenge for the title and played some very good football. It makes sense that more exposure to the formation and style will result in better proficiency in its execution which perhaps explains why ange’s footballing brand gets better and more effective in years 2 and 3….

I expect the introduction of more players who have the necessary skillset yesr on year helps as well.

Hopefully we can keep ccv and jota as they now have a good understandin of what is expected. Regardless ange does not seem like the type to mess when it comes to identifying players and getting them through the door.

If ccv and jota sign up I reckon we will see at least another 3 first teamers brought in, 5 if they don’t.

  21. Still cannot fathom out where all this “Rankers are a good team” pish come from.

Can anyone explain what they have won in the 10 years of their existence…..and please spare me the 55 titles nonsense.

So its 1 title for such a good team…..

    Aye right a good team.

    BADA

GENE will be like a cat on a hot tin roof! Mansfield Town dropping 2 points earlier gives Vale a huge opportunity. Win, and they enter automatic promotion territory.

They have lost their last 2, so I hope they don’t blow up at the last hurdle.

  25. if we want to persist with playing the ball out from the back then we require the goalkeeper and defenders with the quality to do so as we certainly don’t have them currently.

  26. by allowing them tickets for yesterday’s Glasgow derby ,who many on here said was absurd and stupid following the ‘old firm ‘ fiasco at thems park beggars believe that many are surprised at what happened at full time.

  27. Iniquitous backing up my claim that,at the moment,CCV not good enough for the EPL.Maybe never. One good season in the SPFL will not have English clubs clamouring for him. That’s just wishful thinking from the media here.

    Thing is,he does a great job for us,as does Carl.Worth a decent wage,for CCV.

  28. Bournemouth vs Notts Forest, tomorrow night. The 2nd automatic promotion place to the EPL at stake.

If the Ryan Christie sell-on clause is to believed, then a Bournemouth win is worth £2m to Celtic. Better than a poke in the eye, for sure. C’mon The Cherries !
