Celtic do enough to ensure return of league title

398

Having been ahead only to be pegged back for the second time in a fortnight against Newco, there was a deflated feel inside Celtic Park at the end of the game yesterday.  After taking the lead through a Daizen Maeda – Jota combination, Celtic created enough chances to put the game out of sight.  They didn’t.

Newco equalised with the best move of the game and thereafter had a hatful of opportunities to win the game and cut the deficit at the top of the table.  They also failed in this objective.  Celtic remain six points clear with three games remaining, it is now only a matter of when, not if, they will win back their title.

Just as at Hampden last month, Celtic opened poorly, unable to pass through a man-for-man Newco press.  The first chance of the game fell to Ryan Kent, who ghosted past Anthony Ralston but did not make a clean contact on the cross, his effort drifted wide.

Maeda failed to make an impact with his first two crosses from the left but his third was drilled into the six-yard box.  TV replays showed Borna Barisic repeatedly check over his shoulder for an attack by Jota, but the Portuguese only had eyes for the cross, which he converted without too much trouble from the Newco left back, who will now be familiar with Celtic wingers running from behind him to score.

Newco took control of the game after the interval until Giorgos Giakoumakis and Nir Bitton replaced Matt O’Riley and Kyogo on the hour.  In the minutes that followed, Celtic were on top, but could not solidify their lead.  That period ended when Newco strung seven passes together inside the Celtic half that released Sakala with a clear shot at goal inside the box, which he finished well.

With home advantage and a significantly lighter playing schedule, you may have expected Celtic to finish the game the stronger, but the opposite was true.  Sakala hit the post and had another great chance as Newco piled forward looking for a goal that would keep their title chances alive.

It was a great game of football but by no means a classic Celtic performance.  Still, the result ensured the league title will return to Celtic Park for the 10th time in 11 seasons.

  1. 🇵🇹 | Jota

Incoming Benfica boss Roger Schmidt has approved the decision for Jota to remain at Celtic on a permanent basis.

Celtic agreed a fee of around £6.4M last August & will trigger this clause with Schmidt now giving the green light for Jota to leave.

  2. Anytime Celtic recruit outside the club ,plenty on here putting the boot in before they have started there job ,the latest being Lawells son ,if he does a good job on bringing in good players fine ,but like everything else in working life if it doesn’t he will be replaced ,just as the board and P R department which a lot of us have craved for.

  3. Hasn’t Peter Lawell’s son been helpful already, while he was at the Emirates? The fact that he has had the job there speaks volumes to me about his ability. I think we’re on to a winner, although, of course, he will have to work with mightily reduced financial resources.

  4. Hi Tom,

What a nice start to the day. Great signing fella.

What an impact Mark Lawell had made already :)

Not a fan of Lawwell senor but if Ange is happy with his son then who are we to argue?

  6. 2021 Q2 — where were we regarding replacing NL?

There were at least 1000 people in Euro football who would be a better manager than 20/21 NL.

There were at least 1000 people in Non Euro / ROW football who would be a better manager than 20/21 NL.

AP was one of those 2000 plus people and he has had the energy and personality to make a huge difference this season. He has made 21/22 happen with very little help from the board and management bureaucracy he found at the club.

Is there a club doctor in the building and if yes is he full time?

However he is still learning and he needs to keep learning at pace if we are to be CL ready in 4 months time. He — and the rest of the club — has been given a very hard lesson by the B/G debacle where we came up against a progressive / activist club working to modern standards to the best of their ability without absent owners and bo weevil executive management playing games for their own benefit.

The appointment of ML is a disgrace — it shows that Chez Heated Driveway is still where the decisions are made — a house where keeping quiet is the order of the day so that a persona in the SFA / EUFA can be enhanced rather than highlighting the iniquities we face on a daily basis.

Our silence just shows how cheap we are — nepotism is never a good look.

Poundshop club only worried about keeping one step ahead of 99pWorld down the road.

Next season will tell us all we need to know.

If we look like tourists in the CL then I would suggest we look to B/G for salvation.

If our next chairman just happens to be a second rate property bean counter who couldn’t find a growth agenda with a sat nav then we really have been done up like a kipper.

Surely now time to erect a statue of Peter Lawwell.

Where would the Club be without him?

  8. As those poor Hun fans we so BADLY treated by those NASTY Celtic Supporters and the Stewards and Polis inside Celtic Park, can I safely assume that should Celtic offer THEMS ANY amount of Tickets for next season and beyond at Celtic Park….THEMS will REFUSE to accept those tickets due to health and safety reasons ?

    If so…PROBLEM SOLVED !

Of course Celtic FC COULD solve this Hun Animal behaviour inside Celtic Park by BANNING those Hun Hordes from any future games at Celtic Park, and just accept any Fine that the SFA/SPFL Impose. What else can the SFA/SPFL do…..throw Celtic out of the League….I think NOT ?

  9. I’m glad we won’t have a £100m to spend next season or Mark Lawwell might have suggested to Ange that we sign Jack Grealish

I am sure Celtic will have had CCTV from the match on

Sunday which would refute all the crap accusations the

huns are making and put the record straight regarding the

  11. I hope that James Forrest continues to dip his toe into CQN on a periodic basis. His Piers Morgan style rants are in sharp contrast to Paul67’s more Dan Walker type narrative. The CQN party line is very much Board Loyalist so it is useful to have this countered by Board Sceptics. Football blogs are primarily emotion based.

    Good morning CQN

Nir Bitton has been on the receiving end of some criticism on CQN since Sunday, fair enough opinions, and all of that, apparently, he picked up his usual yellow card…

    ———-

Nir has picked up more quick yellows than a cabbie on a busman’s tour of the big apple.

Elegant big player who should have twigged that biased refs are cheating bassas who’ll punish him at the earliest opportunity – with so much experience under his gartel, you’d think he’d save any lunges for situations where he needs to take one for the team.

Right to link to the Tav incident – embarrassingly shows up the Crown Bar Clown for the cheat that he is.

    Serious question.

Is there a more nepotistic football club than Celtic?

A final note on Sunday, there was huns accessing their turnstiles at 11:30. They sensibly hid their colours but those gates should have been shut.

I have a Japanese girl in my organisation. I asked her to find and translate what Reo had said.

She told me he basically said he had never ever travelled so much , Scotland- Japan- Australia – Japan – Scotland (over 7 days) and that he was feeling discombobulated with it all.

(Partly in jest) that awkward moment which reveals those speaking a second language have a better vocabulary and grammar than those speaking it as a first !

A common phenomenon in the UK.

Even more common in UK football.

“The boy done good” and all that. And that’s just the pundits.

Put a shilling on JFK for manager in 24/25.

I wonder what the odds will be / will he even open a book?

We really are just so cheap.

I wonder what DD asked for in return to keep quiet regarding ML?

The quicker we get the Fridge Magnet in or the bloke behind Brentford the better.

We are stagnating towards Euro irrelevance.

No amount of SFA pots will change that.

You can lay the blame on Nir Bitton for the yellow on Sunday, as I stated in my earlier post” we all know why he was booked, apparently, some cant analyse what has happened either at the match or on TV

I have played, managed, coached, and spectated football long enough to be able discern when a referee is cheating, Bitton was on to try and protect the defense as a DM, cheating Beaton booked him for the first challenge to stop him from doing his job with one of those ridiculous bookings filed under “in the opinion of” if he had a blue strip on and was named John Lundstrum Beaton wouldn’t have contemplated the yellow card.

In my expert opinion, Bitton gets a free pass, nonsensical yellow from a cheating MIB

  20. don’t think the polis would have a hard job finding thems culprits as they have a huge viewing gallery right above thems hordes.

  21. Nir’s foul was professional, and as such, leads the way for any referee to punish it with a yellow card. That’s the nub of the matter, he knew what he was doing and he knew the predicted outcome, but, what he did do stopped them getting onto our back 4 quickly and for that he should be praised, not condemned, por cierto.

  22. CFG — they really are milking it to the max.

The white collar hordes who make up their player / talent management nomenklatura.

Absolutely full on regarding wangling money out of CFG for their own benefit.

  24. quadrophenian on

    LIONSROAD

My point is not to say Nir’s tackle deserved an automatic booking.

Rather, as the most booked, bit-part player in our team this season with many years to watch bent refs officiate more harshly against us, does he not know how to self-manage given the MiBs penchant for punishing Celtic players looking to be just as physical as their blue counterparts?

Guess I’m questioning Nir’s situational awareness.

  25. James Forrest, who by the way,I love reading, most of the time, defending his initial disgust at the appointment of Ange by saying,”After a few good results and the business done in the transfer window,I changed my mind”

So James, you could not wait a couple of months to see how we come out of the next transfer window,so as not to replicate making a fool of yourself,as with Ange, but saw the name Law well, and lost all sense of reasoned debate,as you did with the Ange appointment. No amount of attempted whitewashing of your diatribe concerning that shameful rant will be contemplated. You own it.

Keep up the good work.Hail Hail.

  26. Nirs booking on Sunday was universally agreed to be”Taking one for the team”

  27. There should be no crocodile tears shed for Bell. He absolutely despised our club.

Better to say nothing at all.
