Celtic fans to blame, apparently

902

I see Celtic fans are being blamed for rumours of Newco’s administration by their former manager, Ally McCoist. He could argue that. Alternatively, you could suggest that a business unable to secure bank borrowing, dependent on funding from directors, who will soon be forced to find £11m to make a share offer, has created more than enough financial uncertainty without Celtic fans’ assistance.

McCoist suggested “even the biggest Celtic fans in the country” do not want to see Newco go into administration. Not so sure you are right there, Ally. Personally, I would find it a funny, but it is not going to change anything. It would not lead to relegation and will not change the title race in any way.

The most significant outcome of administration could be forcing control from Dave King. Which would be a source of enormous regret.

You hang in there, Dave.

The CQN Podcast: A Celtic State of Mind (EP28) with former Celtic director Tom Grant

Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Celtic’s ex-director, Tom Grant, who offers a fascinating insight into the running of the club in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tom Grant explains exactly why Celtic refused to complete the Mo Johnston transfer in 1989, and lifts the lid on audacious efforts by Billy McNeill to recruit Peter Beardsley and Steve Bruce.

Tom Grant also dissects his relationship with Fergus McCann, and the impact of the ‘Celts For Change’ movement in overturning the ‘family dynasty’ board in 1994.

Bada Iain Archers description of the Oldco can also be applied to Sevco. ‘ As a Scottish football club they are a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace’. Hh

What surprised me was how small Detroit is.

When We were there, we Took the wrong turn off the highway. Ended up in the wrong part. Empty. Weeds growing through cracks in the roads. Burnt out Cars and buildings from the riots in the 60’s are still there! Spooky!

Having said that, there are some parts in and around Detroit that are lovely. Some great restaurants, great museum/art collection.

Somebody will make a lot of money some day from the situation. Did you see Michael Moore’s stuff about the water problems in Flint? Scandalous what has happened to the people there

    TontineT Gift frae God

*We are all gifts from God PETEC, in fact he has given us all talents, it’s how we use them. My late brother was a very good player but too fond of the social side of life, still had a successful life elsewhere but I used tae remind him of the parable of the 5 talents.

I contribute to here for 3 reasons:

    1. I have a great love for our team as do most on here and get pleasure looking back at its remarkable history, even more so when you consider where we play and who and what we are up against.

    2. I love the beautiful game as well, still watch as many games as possible and have great pleasure recall the greats that practice its fine arts, some I have been lucky to see, even in the flesh. BTW my brother and a friend took in 2 quarters and a semi when the 1994 WC was played in the States, never saw any of our Big Cup Finals though as he was over here.

    3. My mother was a very smart woman, did well in her professional life, mostly through hard work, night school, courses etc. When she was growing up the old adage “”cannae get a job because I’m a Catholic” was quite common, as it was in our day, her da, son of Irish parents taught his family “if your good enough they cannae all hold you back”. That’s quite debatable as some of us know.

Anyway, she developed dementia and I watched her descend from a very literate and well read person to not remembering my name when she would see me. I don’t want to go down that route which is why I am still a voracious reader and write often on here.

Forgot to thank Ivehadtochangemyname for putting Not only my late Dad’s fav singer but also song, namely John McCormack and Maggie.

*Maggie a song I love so much, often sung in pubs, clubs, and as a party piece in wee nights in the hoose when I was a boy growing up. I actually have a copy of wee steak and kidney devine singing it on the Frank Skerritt Radio Clyde Saturday morning show.

It’s been often debated whether it was an Irish or Scottish song, I was working in a place called Port Dover on the north shore of Lake Ontario for a couple of days about 35 year ago and driving out there when I passed a tourist location sign just north of Caledonia that read “when you and I were young”.

As my mate was a wee cockney and would have no idea who or what the song was about, even though his wife was fae Govanhill, I never bothered to stop.

However, later on one summer’s day I took Mrs TT a wee drive in the country tae see it, BTW we actually passed through a place called Renton, and found the sign.

The lyrics were written as a poem by Canadian school teacher George Washington Johnson from Hamilton, Ontario. Margaret “Maggie” Clark was his pupil. They fell in love and during a period of illness, George walked to the edge of the Niagara escarpment, overlooking what is now downtown Hamilton, and composed the poem.

It was published in 1864 in a collection of his poems entitled Maple Leaves. They were married in 1864 but Maggie’s health deteriorated and she died on May 12, 1865. James Austin Butterfield set the poem to music and it became popular all over the world. George Washington Johnson died in 1917. The schoolhouse where the two lovers met still stands on the escarpment above Hamilton, and a plaque bearing the name of the song has been erected in front of the old building. In 2005, the song was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

  10. cannae get a job because I’m a Catholic”, how many of us on here have been through that, i will bet most, is there any other country in the world like scotland.

  11. The cultural difference between Celtic & Newco is not just in the attitude & songsheets of their fans.

Celtic pay for their players to spend time at a mid-winter break training camp to recharge batteries & refocus on the 2nd half of the season.

Newco go to Florida for money to take part in a hitherto unknown tournament against U21/development sides from two South American clubs. The “club” got paid to be at the Flroida Cup but they made their players pay for their own tickets on a budget airline. They won both games with their manager reportedly treating them as training exercises. Their fans see it differently though, and I understand that another star is to be added to the handsome collection above the crest on their shirt.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, Bibby International are embarrassed that their name has been associated with a “dead man walking” outfit.

Not as embarrassed as Fabio Brazza, the organiser of the Florida Cup, who has had to apologise to everyone else involved in the tournament after he was humiliated by the offensive tunes that Newco fans tried to teach him.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

  17. Very quiet on here that’s for sure as BFDJ would say.

I see Count John McCormack being mentioned on here, a great favourite of my grandfather, who I am named after, not the singer.

A couple of the more civilised teachers at my old High school would refer to me as The Count, at least I am sure that is what they said. M

I can’t get too much concerned about the sectarian singing by the Manky Mob in Florida for two reasons. Firstly, it is heard weekly at games here and feck all is said. Secondly , I am not surprised that amongst a 5 million fan base they have a few dobbers.
