Celtic interim accounts out, ups and downs

1154

Celtic’s revenue for the interim six months to 31 December 2013 fell 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m), while operational expenses also fell, by 7%, to £34.3m.  The club had £5.7m cash in the bank, £5.6m more than a year earlier.

A few factors behind the figures:

We played fewer home games, 16 as opposed to 19 the previous season, and although you may pay your season ticket up front, the club only recognises the income when games are played (cash at bank is recognised as soon as your payment lands).

Profit was up to an incredible £21.3m, from £14.9m), largely as a consequence of the sale of Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson last summer.  Without wanting to go into the who ‘A word’ (it’s not 2004), money coming in from player sales goes straight to profit whereas money going out on player purchases hits profit gradually over the period of the player’s contract.

Investment in players was almost identical to the previous year, £5.0m from a 2012 figure of £4.7m.

Financially these are great figures but there are potential weaknesses lurking.  The club are absolutely dependent on reaching the Champions League group stages more seasons than not.  This brings significant revenue – and supports whatever player valuations the club will be able to achieve should they sell.  It also acts as the most effective tool to attract talent to Scottish football.

Finishing fourth in the Champions League, not second, is the most significant factor in the interim drop, but it will have a more significant impact on the second part of the season, which will be without a knock out stage round.

Celtic are still repointing the club away from the arms face they fought with a lemming club but they have delivered the key on-field objectives, which in itself takes care of the finances.

  1. macjay,

Amigo, am tired of hearing how the CT are divisive, from folk who ignore some seriously worrying behaviour from the Celtic Board.

The CT are acting to protect fellow supporters under attack from forces with whom the current board have been proven to be complicit.

Why attack those who are the only few bodies to defend your fellow supporters??

Would you maintain the same stand if I was arrested tomorrow morning for singing Joe McDonnell in the Kerrydale Suite this weekend, knowing that my details were given to the rozzers by the Celtic Board before I was arrested ?

Take Celtic out of the equation and go back to your post of 00:25. and try and give others the benefit of doubt.

I posted part of this earlier.Hope it will explain my concerns.

    to quote JF

“I think the Board take us very seriously indeed. Up to this year we were the only organisation who could submit resolutions onto the Plc AGM Agenda. The Plc dont like that, they like to control and stage manage the event. One of the biggest impact we have had is that the Celtic AGM is no longer a stage managed event to the extent the Plc would like at least. The Plc are forced to engage every year to either engage with direct debate with the floor, which they always do granted, or as anyone attending will see, the video interviews may include issues that the Trust have raised and force them to address real issues.’

How can this person be a friend of Celtic?

    Whose side is she on?

    She celebrates:

    “the P.L.C.don`t like that”

” the P.L.C.are forced to engage”

    “force them to address”

    Who does she represent?

    How many does she represent?

Has she asked Aberdeen if they are paying a “living wage”? If not,why not?

Are her concerns only for the employees of Celtic?

  4. On any Celtic blog or chatting to any groups of friends who support Celtic it is very clear that there is a wide range of views and nothing like a consensus on most matters. So, when the CT speak out about something they are not representing Celtic fans but their own particular views. Good luck to them in that but just remember they don’t speak on behalf of all or even most of us.

Eddie – missed your post last night re Lyndsay apologies! It brought a tear to my eye reading it!

I know of a few on here who have found themselves in the same situation with that dreaded knock on the door. I cannot begin to imagine the pain that brings you every waking day.

There are no words that will help or comfort if only it was that easy!

    You ‘cut’ this part:

    I`ll bet she doesn’t give a damn.

Odds on,she`s only interested in achieving personal power and seeks to use Celtic and the G.B. to do so.

Why? Because nobody votes for her radical views any more.

Im an infrequent poster nowadays and hope you dont mind me commenting on your post as above.

Your loss is unfathomable to many of us as parents,

Im sure your daughter will look down on the wee fella with a smile as he wears “her” hat, and he in turn will wear it with equal pride, At 7 he may not yet fully understand the significance but in his own way, as badges are added, as victories are seen and celebrated he is not only continuing but is sharing the love your family obviously have for Glasgow Celtic.

You are right, they don’t speak for all of us, they don’t speak for me, but I agree with some of what they say whilst disagreeing with other viewpoints. In doing so I don’t label them ‘rockets’ or ‘roasters’.

They have put out to support Celtic, I know that does not make them better than the Celtic Supporter who is skint, but they didn’t mould society, they are trying to better Celtic with the less fortunate Celtic Supporters in mind. Is that such a crime?

  12. Macjay

It seems to be the language used as opposed to the intent that you take greatest offence to? I can accept that to a degree, after all, I made my point on here post AGM that I felt Jeanette personalised too much when communicating on the living wage issue.

I still do believe though that the issue itself was an important one, and importantly, a significant number of shareholders felt the same.

    As for your questions,

    She represents shareholders.

How many? No idea, and not certain that the question can be answered by a number. The trust has membership open to all, and that will include shareholders and non shareholders. On voting on any issue, the trust can only represent a shareholder who gives them a proxy vote.

Aberdeen? She/ they are concerned with the welfare of Celtic and Celtic supporters. Why Aberdeen?

I think primarily her concerns ARE for the employees of Celtic. Yes.

So you don’t recognise them, approve if them, but want them to get involved in a wider capacity?

  13. Oh dear ffm 8.01 a bit touchy. Just cause you’d like something to be doesn’t make it so. There is no agreement between fans. Live with it.

I am a fan and one of those who bought shares when Fergus needed us to. I know lots of others like me who think that we are in fact a very well run team. It’s clear my views are different from yours but I respect your right to hold them and I certainly know you will not change them. I can live with that.

Macjay – I understand you don’t agree with the Celtic Trust or the supporters they represent.

What I can’t understand is why you or TonyD feel the need to berate only JF?? The trust is a collective made up of a wide section of our support.

It is the personalisation and the demeaning comments to JF I find hard to take. Disagree with the Trust, question the Trust but there is absolutely no need for the vitriolic criticism of one individual.

Were they any other Third Tier team, we would be saying: That wee team at the top of Division One could cause an upset in the Cup. OK they are not as good as the Top tier teams , but 4-0 against Dunfermline is not a scoreline to be dismissed lightly.
