Celtic interim accounts out, ups and downs

1154

Celtic’s revenue for the interim six months to 31 December 2013 fell 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m), while operational expenses also fell, by 7%, to £34.3m.  The club had £5.7m cash in the bank, £5.6m more than a year earlier.

A few factors behind the figures:

We played fewer home games, 16 as opposed to 19 the previous season, and although you may pay your season ticket up front, the club only recognises the income when games are played (cash at bank is recognised as soon as your payment lands).

Profit was up to an incredible £21.3m, from £14.9m), largely as a consequence of the sale of Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson last summer.  Without wanting to go into the who ‘A word’ (it’s not 2004), money coming in from player sales goes straight to profit whereas money going out on player purchases hits profit gradually over the period of the player’s contract.

Investment in players was almost identical to the previous year, £5.0m from a 2012 figure of £4.7m.

Financially these are great figures but there are potential weaknesses lurking.  The club are absolutely dependent on reaching the Champions League group stages more seasons than not.  This brings significant revenue – and supports whatever player valuations the club will be able to achieve should they sell.  It also acts as the most effective tool to attract talent to Scottish football.

Finishing fourth in the Champions League, not second, is the most significant factor in the interim drop, but it will have a more significant impact on the second part of the season, which will be without a knock out stage round.

Celtic are still repointing the club away from the arms face they fought with a lemming club but they have delivered the key on-field objectives, which in itself takes care of the finances.

You’re having a laugh (I hope)………this new wee team, who have adopted the supporters of a team that died last year, have been struggling to get a result at all this season…….. and as a result of spending the little money they have very unwisely, they continue to get booed off the park every week……no, the clock is ticking….

Perhaps you could do an interview with Jeanette in the next CQN mag? Get the questions from the CQN community in advance?

  5. Just watched the interview with our manager Neil Lennon.

The man sounds as if he’s had enough of our bigoted country and who could blame him for leaving?

Coming from the troubles from across the water, many would think, ach, he should be used to it.

WHY…I’ve met Neil on a couple of occasions in the west end and my company was mixed… To a man, everyone said he was an articulate gentleman.

Sadly, I reckon Neil has had enough, his kids are at an age to realise what he’s been through and I think that will be weighing heavily on him.

  8. Ffm 8.25. I was discussing whether or not the CT represented all or even the majority of Celtic fans. In my view they don’t.

As I said I think there is a wide range of views within the Celtic fan base.

For example I’m sure you would accept that your views and mine are quite different. I would not think it fair that people who thought like me we’re put forward as being representative of the views of Celtic fans because that would exclude others, like you, who think very differently.

The discussion is about how such personalities are detrimental to the welfare of the Celtic Support.

On any Celtic blog or chatting to any groups of friends who support Celtic it is very clear that there is a wide range of views and nothing like a consensus on most matters. So, when the CT speak out about something they are not representing Celtic fans but their own particular views. Good luck to them in that but just remember they don’t speak on behalf of all or even most of us.

    ———

The CT aren’t representing the views of Celtic fans?

Can you please direct me to what actions of the CT you are opposed to?

  20. Top of the morning to you all from the Kingdom of Fife where the early sunshine is being chased away by threatening clouds.

Leftclicktic, I am like you, not a member of the CT but I support them in what they are trying to do (a representative of small shareholders and fans on the board) and this support has been given to Sean Hammil, Charlie Johnston, Peter Carr (RIP), Jeanette Findlay and Marie McCusker over the years.

Minx1888 is right to point out that many people do ad hominem attacks on Jeanette Findlay, which none of the others I have mentioned seem to attract. I don’t support the CT because of personalities but rather because of principles. The personalities who make up the Trust are only there because they are elected by the members. If someone else comes along prepared to do the work then they will be supported by me until I consider they don’t deserve that support.

As a matter of fact the best thing about the CT in recent years in my opinion has been their role in acting as a conduit for non-members to air their views/grievances and the GB, employees seeking a living wage, and our own Canamalar with his resolution have benefited from the CT allowing thier cause to be publicised on their site and facilitating them in other ways.

On the Canamalar resolution, I persuaded two shareholders to support this and while they were content to allow Canamalar, Morrisey, et al leeway in having talks with the board and deferring action on the Fair Play resolution, they think it is about time for a report back.

I agree with them on this and I can see a danger of any further attempts by individuals being thwarted if there is an impression (rightly or wrongly) that the board will simply be able to kick any embarrassing resolutions for the AGM into the long grass by having the main movers in to the boardroom for beer and sandwiches.

Come on Canalamar let us have a report back please. Or do we have to wait till the next AGM?

CP is one of the biggest and best all covered seated stadia in Europe. We’re told. But the upper tiers closed. Me and the wee man (5yrs) are gonnae get soaked sittin in Row B, because Celtic want the ground to look busy……

So we’re not fans, not even paying consumers now……

Just mere props for Sky Sports……

    Well done Celtic… Well done.

  23. HipfO 9.12. Whether or not I agree with the CT line is irrelevant. The point is that they don’t speak on behalf of the Celtic fans. They speak on behalf of those who have joined the Trust because it’s their views they hear. I’m sure you are not arguing that all Celtic fans hold the same views.

  24. At times you have to wonder what plane PL operates on?

After spending £9mill + over the summer on a “throw enough mud at a wall” spending spree he now goes and tells the multitudes — you and me — the we can afford an £8mill player in the summer.

And he thinks this will be seen as progress.

At what point does someone in the crowd point out that he is currently “bo**ock naked” as regards a asset management strategy.

All he has done is put up the price of any player we show an interest in.

All he is doing is reminding us how crap he is at player acquisition.

All the hard one lessons of 2006 seem to have been lost.

We are back to talking big and then not delivering.

I expect “bait and switch” when I try to buy a car.

Not from a well paid CEO who is supposed to be at the top of his game.

Stick to winding up AMcC — you are good at that.

Leave the team building / club development to someone else.

  25. Watched a bit of the zombie game last night before going nightshift and I couldn’t quite believe how dire the standard of football was , I’ve honestly watched junior matches that were of a far better quality , they wouldn’t be capable of causing an upset against our youth side and as much as I have no desire to be drawn against them in this competition we’d absolutely destroy them if we were ( assuming we do the business today of course ) … they would do ” walking away ” en masse before the half hour mark .

    Big Hamish got this.

My use of the word “burd” comes from personal use of the distinction between both sexes and is in no way derogatory. However, my use of the word “donkey” is very much derogatory.
