Celtic interim accounts out, ups and downs

1154

Celtic’s revenue for the interim six months to 31 December 2013 fell 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m), while operational expenses also fell, by 7%, to £34.3m.  The club had £5.7m cash in the bank, £5.6m more than a year earlier.

A few factors behind the figures:

We played fewer home games, 16 as opposed to 19 the previous season, and although you may pay your season ticket up front, the club only recognises the income when games are played (cash at bank is recognised as soon as your payment lands).

Profit was up to an incredible £21.3m, from £14.9m), largely as a consequence of the sale of Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson last summer.  Without wanting to go into the who ‘A word’ (it’s not 2004), money coming in from player sales goes straight to profit whereas money going out on player purchases hits profit gradually over the period of the player’s contract.

Investment in players was almost identical to the previous year, £5.0m from a 2012 figure of £4.7m.

Financially these are great figures but there are potential weaknesses lurking.  The club are absolutely dependent on reaching the Champions League group stages more seasons than not.  This brings significant revenue – and supports whatever player valuations the club will be able to achieve should they sell.  It also acts as the most effective tool to attract talent to Scottish football.

Finishing fourth in the Champions League, not second, is the most significant factor in the interim drop, but it will have a more significant impact on the second part of the season, which will be without a knock out stage round.

Celtic are still repointing the club away from the arms face they fought with a lemming club but they have delivered the key on-field objectives, which in itself takes care of the finances.

This won`t be popular. Sevco are not as bad a team as we like to make out (kidding ourselves?). Were they any other Third Tier team, we would be saying: That wee team at the top of Division One could cause an upset in the Cup. OK they are not as good as the Top tier teams , but 4-0 against Dunfermline is not a scoreline to be dismissed lightly.

The Pars team made up of a load of teenagers.Very raw talent. For long periods of the game they more than held their own, outplayed,in fact, the huns in midfield. They are inexperienced at the back, and a bit toothless up front. The score is not a surprise when you compare the experience between the teams.

tonydonnelly67. If I understand you there are seven regular posters on CQN who are not Celtic fans but are Rangers fans ? I have know idea who they would be and how you would prove it ? I would say if there are any Rangers fans on CQN they should make themselves known because as long as they follow the blog rules every football fan is welcomed by Paul 67 for a long time we had Edward Urus who is a Rangers fan on this forum and from time to time there was a Dons fan.H.H.

Now we are announcing this profit and cash in the bank to the city. Stinks of bonus time. Sorry bhoys , makes me sick as we watched our team struggle in CL without a goalscorer while PL knew fine well of the profits associated with our club, but kept them to announce To the world how wonderfull our balance sheet is

    Shocking

  6. Good to see Sky have an impartial studio for today’s game. The Spanner, McCann & Eric Black. Obviously no Celtic connected ex-player available for the gig. They’re also already trying to hype up a possible ‘Old Firm’ (whatever that is) quarter final.

Not sure about the wisdom of your list but I do hope that when you announce it you’ll do so in a voice that sounds like Philip Madoc as a German sub captain in Dad’s Army.

There are two potential levelers here –

    1. Where the game gets played

    2. The traditional sevco method of winning – the referee.

If T.D’s list by some chance accurately gives us the names of 7 Sevconians I will be well impressed. However if he just lists 7 Tims with whom he disagrees it will confirm my suspicions that he is a plonker extraordinaire.

This sounds like a FF type witch hunt. If any Tims (or suspected Tims) post there they are immediately banned. I know, because I once tried to say something reasonable, and got excommunicated. But just in case there is an FFer on, I sneaked back in. (Whilst Bomber was giving his yooz buy the pies rousing rabble, sorry, speech)

  13. I was looking forward to the game today.

Now I’m looking forward more to TD naming the less-than-magnificent 7.

PS If we win with ease today I’ll be surprised. Think it’ll be a toughie against best (all relative I know) dons tram for many years. But I think we’ll be on our game and the Bhoys will triumph.

  23. The performance of Samaras will be the focus of most people now.

If the big guy decides he wants to stay then fantastic but should the result not go the right way this will be picked over for days.

  24. BRTH, firstly I think you overestimate my influence on here where I am just one of the punters, but I have heard that some individuals are being briefed by e-mail in terms that go beyond the vague ones that your post carries, such as: “The board did not, however, have as much insight into certain things” etc. This is all very cryptic to me and needs some flesh put on the bones.

As to my sources, no I am not prepared to say who they are, but suffice to say they are genuine and do not demand confidentiality, but then they would know in speaking to me that this is a given in a private conversation, as I understand the meaning of that term.

I don’t like the way that you and Auldheid seem to pounce on anyone who has a question on this topic. The resolution was after all a topic that people such as me on this board were fully supportive of.

I canvassed and persuaded two people with strong arguments that we need to support Canalamar as he was filling a void that the board had left. Now you seem to be saying we must wait and hear what the board comes back with? And that is what I mean by the board hijacking the resolution.

We don’t seem to be waiting on Canamalar as much as Lawwell and Bankier.

You hold up the board’s decision not to oppose the resolution as if it were some major concession on their part and is of merit.

It wasn’t it was an act of self-preservation by the board as they saw themselves drifting even further from the views of ordinary fans and had little merit in it coming as it did from the same people who had refused to meet Morrisey23 when he delivered it to Celtic Park and had watched him from behind the boardroom curtains as he dejectedly made his way out of the car park.

Still you say we will know where we are in a month’s time and that will do for me.

Like you I won’t prejudge the issue, but unlike you I don’t think we will get much from the board, just as I don’t expect them to condemn the OB Act or FoCUS police action anytime soon.

But I would love to be proved an old cynic, and wrong.

    All IMHO of course.

The absence of Chico is the big surprise. He must be sick or injured. I expected Stokes to play, he will be hurting from last week and all out to make amends. I also suspected that Lenny might play Sammi. Johansen had an incredible debut last week and Lenny has gone with him, apart from that Lenny has gone with the tried and tested, did anyone expect any different.
