Celtic interim accounts out, ups and downs

1154

Celtic’s revenue for the interim six months to 31 December 2013 fell 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m), while operational expenses also fell, by 7%, to £34.3m.  The club had £5.7m cash in the bank, £5.6m more than a year earlier.

A few factors behind the figures:

We played fewer home games, 16 as opposed to 19 the previous season, and although you may pay your season ticket up front, the club only recognises the income when games are played (cash at bank is recognised as soon as your payment lands).

Profit was up to an incredible £21.3m, from £14.9m), largely as a consequence of the sale of Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson last summer.  Without wanting to go into the who ‘A word’ (it’s not 2004), money coming in from player sales goes straight to profit whereas money going out on player purchases hits profit gradually over the period of the player’s contract.

Investment in players was almost identical to the previous year, £5.0m from a 2012 figure of £4.7m.

Financially these are great figures but there are potential weaknesses lurking.  The club are absolutely dependent on reaching the Champions League group stages more seasons than not.  This brings significant revenue – and supports whatever player valuations the club will be able to achieve should they sell.  It also acts as the most effective tool to attract talent to Scottish football.

Finishing fourth in the Champions League, not second, is the most significant factor in the interim drop, but it will have a more significant impact on the second part of the season, which will be without a knock out stage round.

Celtic are still repointing the club away from the arms face they fought with a lemming club but they have delivered the key on-field objectives, which in itself takes care of the finances.

Here is a question you may know the answer to, I don’t.

When did the Tic start to be called ‘the Hoops?’

  2. Big Nan:

I’ve spoken to a few fellow tims, by e-mail and on the phone regards Resolution 12, none of them, although all of them supported it, has a clue as to what is going on.

Me, personally, despite the obvious that it has been dumbed down, ‘possibly’ with undeliverable promises, I think the board shat it because the board knew that a growing number of supporters were sick and tired of being milked the green pound and in return shat on like mushrooms.

Now the board could not have voted it down without a backlash, so they sweet talked into long stay parking.

    That’s what I think. That’s what I believe.

  3. Today’s the first time in a while I’ve been worried before a match. I hope Leigh Griffiths does well, but don’t agree that this is the day for him to make his first start. Despite the recent games at home, I’m also still not convinced by the 4-4-2/1-1 shape Lenny has gone with at Celtic Park (we’ve looked obvious in attack and vulnerable at the back) , and would prefer the rarely seen, lesser-spotted 3-4-1-2.

  5. The cup doesn`t seem to be the big deal that it once was but I can feel the nerves. Thankfully I`ve remembered the paper ticket and I`m all set.

Please go back and read. Your original post claimed,

“So, when the CT speak out about something they are not representing Celtic fans”

That would suggest that the CT aren’t Celtic fans would it not?

If you read my reply, at no point have I suggested that the views of the Trust are the views of all Celtic supporters.

What exactly is your problem with them?

  9. Goooooooood Morning CQN !

Can’t wait for the game today…. last time I was at a cup game against Aberdeen we were 4-0 up in short order – brilliant seats for that, right next to the goals and the Sheep support, which was great fun :-)

    Meanwhile, elsewhere……

    Dear Mr. Cameron,

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you can stick your “passionate” speech about Scotland up your jacksie, you sanctimonious upper-class Eton fud, with your xenophobic attitude, and your hounding of the poorest people in this country to pay for years of capitalist excess. I passionately detest all that you stand for, and there are legions of people in Scotland who I believe feel similarly; but keep going with all your right-wing bilge, supported by your cast of twiteratti, its a great boost to the Independence campaign

The books have been lightly sauté’d to suit the prevailing mood of PL and the Irish Raj.

The figures have been presented to suit the current agenda.

At no point have I suggested any illegal activity.

Just a case that the reality has been spun / sliced and diced to suit an agenda.

Buying players in June is always the giveaway.

This was the case with SB in — from memory — 2007 and it is the case now.

It inflates the player investment figure of the previous season.

It then reduces the net cash position shown in that years accounts.

It splits up the PL’s “throw mud at a wall” player binge / stiff collecting.

Add in the buy now pay later deals on the guys going out.

And you are left with a board embarrassed to show the full cash position of the club.

Why — because it gives the lie to the fact that we do not have the resources to kick on.

Plus it tries to hide the wasteful nature of 2013 — buying our players from an agents remnant rack.

Then there is the little issue of the £2.256mill GTF money to 2012’s panic buy / poor scouting effort. We can’t pay a living wage but we can throw the cost of 10K season tickets at getting a stiff of the staff.

    MR was bad enough.

    MB seems like carelessness.

We are being run by financial numpties with a bonus driven agenda.

£8mill on a single player — PL will pay that just to prove he can.

    …………………………………………………………

I don’t like what I am hearing about selective confidential briefings.

If the board take this under their wing and neuter it with obfuscation and delay then a legitimate avenue of fan action (resolutions supported by individual small shareholders) will be tarnished and lost to us.

Enough time has ealapse the movers must speak out or tell us why they can’t. We who supported their efforts on here deserve that much.

The very essence of this resolution was the fact that our board had failed in these areas of concern and now it seems that our board have hijacked this resolution and are pulling the strings. IMHO

  13. From the Herald:

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell delivered a withering response to Ally McCoist’s comments on the selection of the Scottish League Cup final venue when he declared his club’s stadium “the biggest and the best”.

On Thursday, McCoist claimed he could have bet money on Ibrox losing out to Celtic Park after Parkhead was chosen as the location for the March 16 clash between Aberdeen and Inverness.

Responding to McCoist’s comments on Celtic Park being chosen, Lawwell said: “It’s the pre-eminent stadium in Scotland, it’s the biggest and the best.

“So if you want to have a bet on the biggest and the best, then you will always win.”

With Hampden being redeveloped for the Commonwealth Games, Scottish Professional Football League chief executive Neil Doncaster announced on Wednesday that 60,000-seater Celtic Park would host the final.

Ibrox, with a 50,000 capacity, was the only other stadium in the running.

Very best of luck to the World Famous Glasgow Celtic today, another clean sheet will do.

I won’t be there today, which is really painful, but I refuse to fund anything towards the SFA – wonder if CO will turn up at the biggest and best stadium in the country today :-)

  17. Grey moment — MB was 2011.

Consequently his book valuation will have been 37.5% of the original purchase price.

Did we really ever pay £2.2mill on him — surely not?

So the intangible asset hit would have been £750 / £825K approx.

Just how much we’re we paying him — €10K pw is my guess w/o bonus.

Just how then can you manage to have to admit to wasting £2.256mill?

To paraphrase — as was mentioned about M+B Winters at the Glasgow Empire …

… Surely to G*d there are not two of them.

Oh well as they say — when it comes to bonus generation — timing is everything.

I personally know a massive amount of fellow Tims, 99.9% agree with my feelings. There are TWO I know who have said we need them, or would like to see them back(?).
