Celtic interim accounts out, ups and downs

1154

Celtic’s revenue for the interim six months to 31 December 2013 fell 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m), while operational expenses also fell, by 7%, to £34.3m.  The club had £5.7m cash in the bank, £5.6m more than a year earlier.

A few factors behind the figures:

We played fewer home games, 16 as opposed to 19 the previous season, and although you may pay your season ticket up front, the club only recognises the income when games are played (cash at bank is recognised as soon as your payment lands).

Profit was up to an incredible £21.3m, from £14.9m), largely as a consequence of the sale of Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson last summer.  Without wanting to go into the who ‘A word’ (it’s not 2004), money coming in from player sales goes straight to profit whereas money going out on player purchases hits profit gradually over the period of the player’s contract.

Investment in players was almost identical to the previous year, £5.0m from a 2012 figure of £4.7m.

Financially these are great figures but there are potential weaknesses lurking.  The club are absolutely dependent on reaching the Champions League group stages more seasons than not.  This brings significant revenue – and supports whatever player valuations the club will be able to achieve should they sell.  It also acts as the most effective tool to attract talent to Scottish football.

Finishing fourth in the Champions League, not second, is the most significant factor in the interim drop, but it will have a more significant impact on the second part of the season, which will be without a knock out stage round.

Celtic are still repointing the club away from the arms face they fought with a lemming club but they have delivered the key on-field objectives, which in itself takes care of the finances.

  1. Talking of Lenny scoring brings back a wee memory. Was at the 8-1 game away to Dunfermline (2005/6). Wee brother was in America, no access to the game so he asked us to text him whenever there were any goals. Texts went like this. ~1-0 Stan~ 1-1~ 2-1 BBJ~ 3-1 Magic~ 4-1 Magic~5-1 Magic~6-1 Wee Shaun~ 7-1 Lenny…..Immediately he texted back..” I thought yeez were takin the piss, now I know yeez are”

I never want us to play Sevco, not even for the first time, unfortunately my wish is destined to fail. Like it or lump it, it`s inevitable. SMSM will go into overdrive, it`s what most people wanted blah blah blah. Who/where are all these Celtic supporters they all hear saying we need them? I personally know a massive amount of fellow Tims, 99.9% agree with my feelings. There are TWO I know who have said we need them, or would like to see them back(?).

I am of the opinion a damn good humiliation at our hands will quicken their demise; there is NOTHING that will cripple ‘ra peepil’ more than being starkly reminded of the eternal gulf between us now.

last person to call me Hobo was my late father in law during his ‘father of the bride speech’. He did a series of tenuous links from John Boy, via Hobo and finally ended “…but this was the first time I ever met a Jobo…”. It’s stuck with me since then (centenary season).

Anyway, glad I won the quiz. With a score of 1 out of 8.

Not sure about the beamback but despite reservations I’m sure a lot of fans will have, I would expect a massive turn out to support the team, unusually high for a game against a third-tier outfit

I see PL now says we can spend £8 million on a player. Up £2 from what Neil had said. Question is do you spend it before or after season book money comes in? or do you wait for a newly formed club with a dodgy safety certificate to achieve SPFL status?

Just about to head off to the park with the two youngest weans — oldest one has abandoned me for his mother and a seat at Murrayfield later on today — the boy needs a talking to!

    Re Res 12 etc.

The last meeting of our group took place on 3rd February at which we discussed a timeline of events and a series of points that were prepared and distributed by Auldheid in advance.

That paperwork runs to several pages and covers various events going back a number of years plus various documents which have come into the public domain.

The meeting was in preparation for a further meeting with the Celtic company secretary which will take place at the end of the month– it is scheduled for then to allow Canamalar to return home from the east and be present. This particular meeting follows on from the meeting we all attended on 23rd December — with the Company Secretary coming in specifically for that meeting and that meeting alone – to the extent that arrangements had to be made at Celtic Park to provide facilities and care for his two small children while the meeting progressed.

At our meeting last week, we agreed on a strategy and an approach that we want to put to the Celtic Board as to how they should proceed. Initially, we had thought about simply discussing the timeline and the points we have raised with them, and then allowing them to take these points on board and then wait to see how they react and respond.

However, after discussing the matter further, we have come up with our own strategy that we want to put to them, and to that extent we are working on draft correspondence that we will put to them in advance of the meeting.

I should add that the need for that correspondence comes from what we see as the potential continued wriggling of the SFA and not from any reluctance on the part of Celtic, who, to be honest, have been pushing us to have the meeting earlier if possible.

In my opinion, there will be no quick resolution to the enquiries made to the SFA, and I will not go into the reasons for that on here, but suffice to say resolution 12 and its subject matter is far from in the long grass and is a moving, living exercise which is ongoing and involves considerable back research and consideration of tactics to avoid being palmed off by the unseen hands and heads of those who would wish we would just go away.

Be in no doubt, that there are considerable politics in play here from Hampden.

Beyond that, the notion that those concerned in pushing this can be bought off with a couple of sandwiches and a cup of coffee in a skybox every couple of months is riseable.

I had thought that Auldheid had posted some kind of report last week but perhaps I am mistaken, so for the avoidance of doubt both dialogue and action on these matters continue with the next meeting being at the end of the month with the proposals and documentation to be considered being distributed by us in advance.

    That is where we are.

Fact on numerous occassion this season I have been unable to give away a spare season ticket for Celtic Park which has come into my possession

Fact if the same seat were to be available free for a cup game against the Huns I would have no problem whatsoever in giving it away

As for missing the Huns if they disappeared altogether it would leave a lot of posters with no main topic of conversation unless we devoted the blog wholly to the merits of black puddings and red wines

Think it’s going to be a good match today and if he’s available I’d go with Griffiths. Dons have impressed me this season and look to be headed up the way . 63 year hoodoo to break. Shame it won’t be a bigger crowd.

I’ll go for a nervy 3-1 win – the third coming when we are whistling for Collum to signal time up as he’s played 6 of the advertised 3 minutes injury time.

Good Morning to all Celtic fans, well I am sorry that my post about Dunfermline being no match for the Rangers was accurate. I see folk saying if we get past Aberdeen and draw the Rangers at Parkhead would PL have to keep the top tier closed ? well I read on CQN many writing they never want tosee Celtic Play the Rangers now if this was the same for 99% of Celtic fans Parkhead would be empty for the game however,I would bet my mortgage it would be a full house as they say talk is cheap. On the subject of buying an 8 million pound player I am sure we could but certain we wont.H.H.

  16. BRTH,

Are you ok if I copy and paste your res 12 update onto The Huddleboard?

When we were trying to rustle up support for the resolution,I raised it on there and a good number stated their intention to contact canamalar to “sign up”.

It would be helpful if I could keep them in the picture

Don’t know when or if there is an actual time for the nickname “The Hoops”.

  18. I heard a funny story on Radio Scotland this morning from their Orkney Correspondent.

It seems one of their English incomers, a female Council official, had instituted a policy of replacing black bags with wheelie bins to collect the rubbish. She had not appreciated how attached the Orcadians were to their old black bags, which they called sacks. Actually, in the Orkney accent, the “a” in sacks is pronounced as “e”.

Hence, the confusion of the Englishwoman concerned when an elderly Orcadian arrived at her office and demanded that she provide him with some “rubbish secks”.

Well Celtic are going to have a standing only area at Parkhead for next season would that not be an ideal area to house The Green Brigade ? Standing during the match was one of the things the board had against them. However I dont think anyone can argue that there colour and vibrancy is missed at home games and it is far to quiet Bring Back the Green Brigade to the new standing area. H.H.

The full quote from PL does add a bit of contest to the posts that suggest he has promised a £6m or £8m signing.

I know what “can” means and it is not interchangeable with “will”. I know what caveats are too.

    The full quote:-

“Celtic can buy a £6m-8m player if the value is there. We would not buy a 29-year-old at £8m on a four-year contract at £40,000 a week because that is dead money. We’re not buying players just for the sake of it.”

I don’t like what I am hearing about selective confidential briefings.

If the board take this under their wing and neuter it with obfuscation and delay then a legitimate avenue of fan action (resolutions supported by individual small shareholders) will be tarnished and lost to us.

Enough time has ealapse the movers must speak out or tell us why they can’t. We who supported their efforts on here deserve that much.

The very essence of this resolution was the fact that our board had failed in these areas of concern and now it seems that our board have hijacked this resolution and are pulling the strings. IMHO

    ———————————————————————————————————————

Sorry, but this concerns me specially as it comes from someone who carries a huge amount of respect from many including myself.

When you talk of not liking what you hear about selective confidential briefings– can I ask what you are hearing and from whom?

Also can I ask why you think the board have hijacked the resolution – which resolution was adjourned by agreement following a series of meetings at which the board changed their mind to vote against it as unnecessary?

Obviously we cannot guarantee what the Celtic Board will do at any given stage, but I thought we had already reported back that the board had raised some of the questions posed by resolution 12 ( and indeed more ) as far back as 2011?

The board did not, however, have as much insight into certain things as perhaps we did and so they have come to our way of thinking at least to an extent and what happens next is what will be discussed at the end of the month. I am pretty confident as to the outcome of that meeting, but don’t want to predict the exact course of events for obvious reasons– chief amongst which is that the people at Celtic have to be given their place and allowed their input.

Anyway, if further clarification is needed on any point then please do not hesitate to ask any of us and I can always be contacted directly at editor@cqnmagazine.com.

By the way, on the topic of the Celtic Trust, one of the points of the Trust is to be a unified body which brings shareholders together to speak with one voice and as one bloc.

Many may not agree with how they go about their business or even the personalities involved at times, but the need for a solid large bloc of individual shareholders in Celtic PLC is essential in my view given my previously stated concerns about the potential consequences of the PLC structure and the current make up of shares.

For anyone who likes the tactical side of the game, this does seem quite boring(the guy could change the tone of his voice more often) but it’s a breakdown of the 4-3-2-1 formation, showing movement and roles. So if you have twenty mins and are a football nerd like me, see if you can see Celtic playing this way with who doing what, lot’s of recent successful teams use this formation. Our manager clearly studies football tactics and intimate he is always learning, I particularly like how we have players who adapt so well in-play.

In the future, I see Amido or Fridj playing the lone striker role like Drogba/Torres (at Liverpool) for instance. Just my thoughts ;-)
