Celtic midfield problems

645

Neil Lennon accepted responsibility for the tactical decision to start yesterday’s game with three at the back, saying, “We thought the three would suit us, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We looked a little bit flat the first 10-15 minutes and I don’t know why.”

Hibernian scored during this period, which may or may not have been a result of the defensive line-up, but if anything, Celtic were even flatter after they went to four at the back.  The game was a throwback to the days when Gordon Strachan’s teams worked hard but seldom inspired.

The midfield didn’t dominate enough of the ball to prevent Hibs creating several good chances and was unable to craft a clear-enough opening.  With Charlie Mulgrew on the field we are always dangerous, and Kris Commons has a better sense of where the goal is than anyone at the club, but without them we grasp to Paddy McCourt, who only seems to get the call when we’re in trouble.

So where do we need to strengthen next month……………?

  6. So when the bells sound at midnight tonight raise a glass and send the assailant on its way. Slam the door behind it and welcome in a New Year that can surely only be kinder and more considerate to our national sport.

We simply can’t do with another year like the last one. None of us.

Since 2011 – or whenever the first crayon-scrawled death threat dropped through Neil Lennon’s front door – football in Scotland has been poisoned by a nasty air of malevolence. It has become a stinking madhouse, dripping with suspicion and paranoia. And we should take no more of it.

Yes, 2012 will be remembered fondly by some. They will cherish the memories of how Rangers were savaged by a foaming-mouthed pack and then ripped limb from limb.

These bloodthirsty ghouls would gladly watch it all happen again tomorrow, such is the depth of their hatred but it is time now for the more gentle, civilised and decent minded among us to rise up and to quietly take our ball back.

Why must Scottish football belong only to the angriest of men? Why should the rest of us stand back any longer and watch them ruin it, motivated only by their ingrained bitterness and resentment?

Have we not all suffered enough?

Something has gone badly wrong in this country. Good people are turning their backs on Scottish football in their droves because they no longer feel welcome. They have no wish to live their lives in such a furious and rancid environment.

That’s why my heart sank just a little further last week when news emerged of serious misbehaviour on the terraces of Dens Park on Boxing Day, when Celtic were in town.

Hands up, I wasn’t there to see it but plenty others were and some of the eye-witness accounts of what went on among sections of the travelling support paint an utterly disgusting picture of drunken neddery.

No wonder chief executive Peter Lawwell and manager Neil Lennon were quick to condemn those involved because this was a highly embarrassing end to what has been an otherwise sound year for the club.

The progress made on the pitch by Lennon and his players has enhanced Celtic’s reputation and international standing. Lawwell spoke eloquently at the recent draw for the last 16 of the Champions League in Nyon about how the rest of Europe was so pleased to have Celtic back at the top table, almost like the prodigal son.

Okay, maybe he was laying it on a bit thick but he also had a point because Celtic Park on a Champions League night can be a special place. Maybe even one of Europe’s finest.

This season’s competition has been all the richer for the story of Celtic’s remarkable successes in the group stages, even if Michel Platini has been trash talking Celtic’s chances of hanging around with the big boys for any longer than it takes for Juventus to deal with them.

That may or may not be true. For what it’s worth, unlike Platini, I actually fancy Lennon’s men to be the last British side standing in the quarter-finals. But that’s for another day.

Either way, back in the here and now of it all, Lawwell will have been mortified by the disturbances in Dundee which did nothing to enhance the cuddly-toy image he is so keen to promote on a global scale.

Yes, in these times of whataboutery some Celtic fans will no doubt point to the arrests made at Hampden on Saturday among the Rangers support and insist the other lot are every bit as bad. But that would be to deliberately miss the point.

There is a problem here which needs to be recognised before it can be fixed and so, as badly timed and as unwelcome as it was, the latest flash-point in Dundee may actually have presented Celtic with a perfect opportunity to start the big clean-up on behalf of all of us.

To lead the way by beginning the process of clawing the game back from the clutches of the lunatic fringe.

It’s now a matter of how serious the club wishes to be about lancing the boil because if they are determined enough, then surely with the help of CCTV and the Tayside Police they will find a way of identifying some of the worst culprits from the other night – of hunting them down and banishing them from the Celtic family so this unruly minority can do no more damage.

Of course it’s a difficult task for Lawwell because he could be accused of turning on his own customers which is hardly good business. But Lennon was spot on the other day when he said that Celtic would be better off without them in any case. Also heartening was the response of those thoroughly decent Celtic supporters who were equally appalled by some of what went on in Dundee and who have subsequently contacted the club to name names.

They too have had enough and good on them for having the courage of their convictions and the gumption to do something about it.

They too want their ball back. And they are not alone.

Up and down the land, at almost every club, there are good supporters who have become tired, embarrassed and dismayed by the antics of others.

So now that 2012 is over and a New Year is upon us, Celtic have the chance to start a trend which could sweep throughout the football landscape during 2013, cleansing it for the rest of us.

It is time for Scottish football’s silent majority to find its voice. To stir itself and refuse to accept the unacceptable any longer.

And maybe this time next year the beautiful game will be smiling again and looking a damn sight more pretty than she does right now.

  7. I watched the Dundee game on the TV and noticed the booing of Celtics coloured players from the off- I tried hard to think why Efe Ambrose was so unpopular in Dundee and could think of only 2 possible reasons- 1 he plays for us, or 2- he is black. As none of the white Celtic players got that treatment I can only surmise that it was racist abuse- completely ignored by the media of course. As for Salmonds role in the non reporting of this- he was behind the drafting of a law aimed specifically at providing opportunity to jail Celtic fans- which just encourages the MSM’s institutional bias against anything associated with Irish Catholocism

Getting back to the game. It’s simple to see what the problem was, that bloody strip, that’s what!! I appreciate commercial reasons but we should be playing in the Hoops in all games. Call me a traditionalist but at worst we should be playing in maybe vertical green and white striped tops and NEVER EVER black socks.

Green (Brigade) Jumping Spider – Mopsus mormon

    FAMILY SALTICIDAE

Green Jumping Spiders can be found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia. They are also known as Northern Green (Brigade) Jumping Spiders. In some older literatures Mopsus penicillatus was used as their scientific name.

Female, body length 12mm Yea And the Rest..

Green (Brigade) Jumping Spiders are beautiful and large Jumping Spiders. They are the largest jumping spider found in Australia. We sometimes find the spiders actively hunting on plants during the day. Jumping Spiders in Australia are not toxic to human, but this Green (Brigade) Jumping Spider is known will give a painful bite. Anyways no human deaths are attributed to their bite.

MOST of Neil Lennon’s squad were able to enjoy some well-earned rest during the month of June, basking in the sunshine as champions. However, for Georgios Samaras and Mikael Lustig, there was more football to be played as they were both involved in the European Championship finals with Greece and Sweden respectively. And they enjoyed differing fortunes. Samaras helped Greece qualify for the quarter-finals from Group A, at the expense of co-hosts, Poland, and they Sammi produced a heroic performance in the last eight against Germany, with Samaras scoring, before eventually going down 4-2. Lustig and Sweden, meanwhile, finished bottom of Group D, only recording one win in their final group game against France. The fixtures for 2012/13 were also announced during June, and the Champions looked forward to an opening day match at home to Aberdeen, when the league flag would be raised over Paradise.

Ah the CQN Monday morning gossip colum.

Ok I confess me and Mags did live together for a short time. She left to go to America promising flight tickets etc. that never materialised. Yeah she just wanted shot of me I can now accept.

I was comforted by our flatmate at the time the well read highly tempramental and sexed Huberta. Remember her Mags ? A real looker. A sucker for Scottish culture and music. We had one of those relationships after Mags left me where we pretended to be sleeping together. Kept the bhoys away from her and she foolishly thought it would console me after Mags’s hurried departure.

Anyways Huberta dumped me one night in a pub in Manchester where she fell in love with a gay Irish folk singer called Stephen ..it was a pity I was there when she jumped all over him. This was in the days before English reality TV turned the young fighting Irish men into ones that walked funny with a lisp. Anyways I am digressing. Huberta and gay Stephen had 6 that is six babies together. She was always boss.

I recently heard she had left all of them in Manchester. Stephen being financially comfortable and had returned to Scotland to do a Scottish music and culture course at one of Glasgows universities. She has been seen and reported recently much to Stephens delight to be attending literaly evenings and art galleries while holding hands ..and the occasional public arse fumble from a well kent CQNer!!!! Would you believe it ? Small world …. Full circle etc.. but why the older model I keep wondering ????

I wont give the game away as I am not a gossip. A couple of hints though to help. He is a big fan of traditional Scottish music and loves to gossip.

    Enough gossip for one day.
