Celtic midfield problems

645

Neil Lennon accepted responsibility for the tactical decision to start yesterday’s game with three at the back, saying, “We thought the three would suit us, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We looked a little bit flat the first 10-15 minutes and I don’t know why.”

Hibernian scored during this period, which may or may not have been a result of the defensive line-up, but if anything, Celtic were even flatter after they went to four at the back.  The game was a throwback to the days when Gordon Strachan’s teams worked hard but seldom inspired.

The midfield didn’t dominate enough of the ball to prevent Hibs creating several good chances and was unable to craft a clear-enough opening.  With Charlie Mulgrew on the field we are always dangerous, and Kris Commons has a better sense of where the goal is than anyone at the club, but without them we grasp to Paddy McCourt, who only seems to get the call when we’re in trouble.

So where do we need to strengthen next month……………?

    Good morning CQNers,

Having only the BBC highlights to judge Saturday’s game I have to admit it is scant evidence as a basis for an opinion but Thomas Rogne was the root cause for all Hibs chances.

Much as I’m reluctant to criticise any Celtic player but Saturday was another poor performance from Thomas and I’m afraid it’s time to recognise that he’s lacking in too many areas of his game to play a role for us.

His positional sense is often found wanting, he possess neither touch nor speed and I’d guess his pass completion rate is pretty low. Sadly he’s lacking in too many areas to progress.

Over the weekend I heard an interesting snippet that Chuckles Green is ruffling a few feathers at Sevco, seemingly he attempted to install his girlfriend into a position of some authority within the club but she was given the bums rush.

Can 2013 deliver more fun to us tims….. Not gonna be easy but … Come on you bhoys in green ;)

  4. Isn’t it amazing how the English press have been all over racist incidents at football in recent weeks and yet in Scotland, the racist abuse of Celtic players is completely buried by the MSM.

Yep its all Alex Salmonds fault

We never had any bad press before Alex Salmond

The Scottish football authorities always treated us fairly before Alex Salmond

  6. I cannot understand why paddy mccourt isn’t a regular, particularly playing against scottish opposition. he is the only player we have that can unlock a defence. he goes past players as if they don’t exist and his effective passing percentage is extremely high. crosses from mulgrew are a useful weapon but surely we aspire to more than high balls into the box? samaras flatters to deceive and his work rate and team contribution is extremely poor. our strikers are starved for most of the game, particularly hooper who is a penalty box player. come on neil, stop just picking your favourites.

It is not always black and white. Neil said quite recently that injury was limiting Paddy`s game time. There is no doubt that McCourt has the ball control and passing ability to enhance our chances against defensive set-ups. I think Neil Lennon is in a better position to decide on whether Paddy is worthy of a place or not. I would like to see him given more game time in the SPL.

I asked this yesterday but no one answered – who was racially abused and what happened?

  10. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

Good morning from a very bright and warm (23*) West Lothian!

Well, am sittin’ in the dinin’ room wi the light oan, curtains shut and the central heating turned up.

  11. re Gershon – I am not aware of this guy. Have seen Standaard 2 or 3 times this season, but he has not been playing for them – I believe he has been out on loan perhaps? A little bit strange, as they are having a mixed season, and are sitting 4th or 5th in the table just now.

They do have several players who could enhance Celtic’s squad though – ogunjimi being the main example, and we were linked with him last window. can’t see a striker coming in now though, unless hooper is sold.

The Standaard skipper is Jelle Van Damme – 6’4” no nonsense defender – the sort of player who when a high ball comes into your box, it comes straight back out again… off his head. For me, he would be the guy to sign – height, strength and physicality. However, Gershon probably fits the Celtic profile – young(ish), international player, can play more than one position (and we do need cover at left back).

Either way, it is pleasing to see the Club scouting in belgium again – it is a great league for a Club like ours, as players tend to be technically good, as well as quite athletic. It is like France, but a bit cheaper.

  12. Isn’t it amazing how the weather in Glasgow has been absolutely shocking in recent weeks and yet in Scotland, the soakings I have been subjected to have been completely buried by the MSM.

    Welcome to Salmondland…

  13. luxcelt- I agree, it looks like a good market for us, the national team is flying and there must be loads of good young players coming through with similar qualities to those at the very top.

Plus of course we have unearthed a gem from there already.

  14. Jingle Jackson surpasses even himself today in his piece in the Record. The greatest stain of 2012? Yes, those horrific scenes at Dundee which he writes in spades about while at the same time telling us he was not even at the match. No sign of Chelsea or Millwall fans at this match then. Jabba will be proud of his junior.

    Yip – I concur 100% with that m8.

Sammi’s contribution in the CL-games has been invaluable.

But – If you were to get analytical…Sammi contributes to what ?

10-15 mins a season ? NOT good enough ! imo

As for Neil picking his favorites ? – Yes ! It’s a clique ! imo

Broony plays like a Rankers player – trying to be provocative like – Wullie Johnston ?

Any manager with any savvy – would have punted Broony during the summer. Let him leave as a Champion-Captain Winner and, draw the line. While we’re at it – I’d get rid of – Joe(the ghost) Ledley

    Beram(always injured) Kayal

Emelio(never be the same again) Izzigire

Kris(hit the big-time an noo he canny be ersed) Commons

oh, Paddy(if ye had a savvy manager ?) McCourt

Or…we can just plod along and – continue to empty the stadium…just like Neil’s wee pal

    …..WGS.

Oh and, btw…if Gary Hooper played in a team that made chances…Barca – R. Madrid would be after him. Hooper is FFFFfffaaaaaaarrrrrrrr too ghood for Liverpool. imo

But….we’ll never see that as, unfortunately…if Forrest is oot injured – there’s nea chances made.

Not looking for a fight….only saying what I see.

there is another guy I would suggest the Club look at if they need defensive cover. Allan Nyom is at Granada, but has been on loan from Udinese for 2 or 3 seasons now. Everyone has seen the quality of the Udinese squad, and how difficult it is to break in there. He is a big (lean) centre back, who has played for the Cameroon team a few times, and been involved in a few relegation scraps with Granada. Same age as Gershon (24) – with a good pedigree – French youth systems (can’t remember which club) and then Udinese, whose skills in the transfer market are well documented.

edit – just checked – he came originally from Arles-Avignon, the club who signed big Bobo Baldé. If Udinese didn’t need to take him back, they may look to sell him.

Belgium has better beer and better chocolates – but France has the best food and the best burdz.

  18. Luxcelt- cheers bud, you’re no Willie McKay by any chance? :-)

Loads of good quality out there, getting them to come to this miserable place is the challenge!

    – > No! but i have always felt that both leagues (belgium and france) offer ideal players for a Club like Celtic, as you have to be bothe technically sound, as well as athletic. Both leagues are fairly physical, but young players are trained properly. English clubs however hoover up the best of the french league, so for us, Belgium is a cheaper option. Both leagues have a lot of african players, and for me, they represent the kind of players we should be going for.

“you’re no Willie McKay by any chance?”

    – > Please Ghod no!!

am always on the lookout for players who would either improve Celtic, or could make us a big profit though. I am a huge admirer of Udinese too – they have small crowds, but make a fortune on transfers – scouts all over the world.
