Celtic, or Wales, against the world

597

I read Wales defender Connor Roberts say “99% of the world” will support Denmark in their last 16 tie tomorrow and thought- the underdog, fighting against the crowd.  99% of the world will not support Denmark, not me, for a start, but the ‘us against the world’ narrative is one of my favourites.

As a rallying call, it is surely more effective than the alternative.  Today’s footballer is an immensely well catered for athlete, apart from his 90 minutes on the park and (relatively few) hours on the training field, he will struggle for little.  What does he have to fight against, if not perceived ranks of people wanting him to lose?

Beaten, humiliated in Europe, trophy-less, written-off by many among our own, singled-out by the Government.  Ange Postecoglou will not have to work hard to convince the players is really is them against the world.  This squad really does have plenty to fight against.

    BIG JIMMY

Sorry hear you’re no well again big man. Just picking out some stuff from your posts. The heaviest i’ve ever been is 19st 4lbs. I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic cut out as much sugar as I could stand no full fat irn bru (3 – 4 litres a day) and all the lovely cakes you mentioned earlier. Got down to 16st 10lbs. My doctor then changed my meds took me off Gliclazide and put me on Jardiance the weight fell off me. The surgery pharmacist said this stuff makes you piss out the equivalent of a mars bar of pure sugar each day. I’m now down at 14st 3lb. My wife says i’ve not to lose any more weight cos i’m too skinny. I think she’s just feart that with the weight loss and going for a day out with you i’ll get a burd.

*I too was diagnosed about 14 year ago, good health previous tae this although the nutty hours I was putting in meant I was eating at the wrong time had a lot to do with it.

We also had a drug alcohol programme at work, 0.08% for union employees, 0.04% management and the likes of me on a secret security clearance pass 0.00%, so alcohol abuse couldnae be blamed here.

However, I just went intae denial, my family doctor at the time who hailed from across the Clyde, told me liquor was out especially rums, vodkas and gins or any that are drunk with sugar based mixes.

The only beer allowed was light beer, eff that I thought I’m no drinking lassie’s beer, so it was Chardonnay which seemingly is allowed, although I’m aware that zero sugar wine disnae actually exist but white has the lowest content.

A few years later and I retired, that made matters worse, too much time on my hand, my weight went up. When I got married I was 10 ½ stone, within a year it was 11 ½ and hung around there for many many years. All of a sudden I’m up tae 12 ½, and on 11 pills now plus needles.

One night sitting on the couch with a litre and a half of plonk in front of me I realised that if I wanted tae see my grandweans growing up this cannae go on, Mrs TT was visiting one of our weans at the other end of the country.

I then took the bottle and poured it down the sink, naw I didnae I am Scottish and we throw nothing away, however I never bought another bottle, that was possibly about 8 years ago, as I don’t do the Lena Martell “One Day a Time”, I don’t count the days since my last drink.

When my doctor stuck me on the needles he also prescribed Jardiance, best move he made for me, he also told me you can only get it if you are diabetic as it helps lose weight by literally peeing sugar.

I had initially to get cream for an irritation at the tip of my Christmas hamper due tae no being Jewish and the sugar build up.

I bought a dug for the exercise as well as companionship, took up coaching minor soccer and voluntary work, and I’m now off the needles and down tae 4 pills, one of which is for an extra heart beat I have but also serves for blood pressure.

Mrs TT, although delighted with the new me, gets a bit annoyed when I keep punching a hole in my belt due tae the new slim me lol, down tae 11 stone now.

Here I go, three pages and four hours off the pace as usual. This was a good post.

You stand up for yourself and Celtic, I hope you continue.

I never big up the Celtic support. When anyone mentions how popular the Celtic support is around the world, I say we are so busy despising each other, there’s no aggro left over to inflict on outsiders.

All I want is to be at Celtic Park to watch my team when this pandemic allows. Fair travel to all Celts who have other conditions they need met.

    Missed the Belgium Portugal game.

Did the Portuguese play beautiful carefree attacking football from the outset?

Did Axel Witsel play a forward pass?

Did a meteorite strike the crossbar?

  6. quadrophenian on

So a guy with a 26-year coaching record that embraces back-2-back title wins in his homeland, a league winning stint in Asia’s top league, plus who secured World Cup qualification and an Asian Cup win for his adopted country – mostly with paltry resources – shouldn’t be ‘anywhere near this place’.

Yet self-aggrandising ‘crusaders’ whose main contributions are to have ‘spent the last eight months – criticising the club non-stop’ (BTW JF; that’s what the SMSM does) expect to be heeded, listened to and respected ?

Surely any blogger’s self-invented job is not just to carp, condemn and criticise about us as the MSM does? It’s surely to ‘do citizen journalism’ – frank, quirky, informed and imaginative – that represents a fresh and personal take on the reality of any situ – but without the usual shrill and sweeping editorial bias or clickbait-procuring prejudice?

Please, James Forrest: Celtic HAS its problems and bloggers have a key role in flagging them; but there’s surely as much right about this place as there is wrong (the 2×9 and 4×3 should be a clue to that).

That’s worth the odd blog piece now and then!

A few years back Ian Wright was on the panel during an English World cup game.

England, as usual, got pumped (might have been Croatia)

    Any way

Cue Gary Lineker, “Ok Ian, what about that?”

“Don’t want to talk about it” says the bold Ian….and he never….for the remaining 45 minutes the programme was on. Nothing, nada, zilch.

Oh how the rest of the panel laughed

Then I wondered…will he still be paid when saying nothing?….when he’s obviously paid to give his “expert” punditism

    The guy’s a choob

    …………………

Your Post reminded me of the ex Hun Manager Jock Wallace.

It was maybe around the EARLY 1980’s and Wallace had not long left the Huns and was manager of Leicester City.

He was part of a TV Fitba Panel ( STV) one night for Old Rangers v FC Cologne ( I think ?). The European game at Ipox was supposed to be played on the Wednesday night, but was cancelled late on due to the pitch being water logged, there had been a Monsoon in Glasgow that day.

It was to be played 24 hours later on the Thursday night and LIVE on TV ( STV).

The Germans ( I think it was FC Cologne ?) destroyed the Huns 3-1 or 4-1 ( I think ?) at Ipox. the huns had been totally outplayed etc.

at the end of the game, in the TV Studio, the Host turned to the Panel and Jock Wallace, to ask HIS opinion/views of the Match that they had just watched……

Cue Jock Wallace…” Im saying NOTHING……….Im SICK” !

The TV Host quickly moved on to the Two other Panelists…and got their views…Jock Wallace just sat there with the RAGE and Anger on his face in full view and didnt say another word.

I remember that I ripped into the Huns at work the next day…and NOT just about them getting GUBBED…..but ALSO about BAD LOSER Wallace, who was getting PAID to express HIS Views and REFUSED to do so…simply cos HIS old Mob had been humilated….especially LIVE on TV.

It was during that game ( at half time), and the TV Ads were on, and just as they had finished and about to return to the TV Studio…A ” Large CRUCIFIX” suddenly appeared Onscreen for a few seconds.

The TV Host made NO Mention of the Crucifix as the 2nd half was about to start….But…the next Morning the MAIN Story was that the STV Phones Lines had been SWAMPED with Protests about the Image appearing Onscreen during a Huns game….and in general the Complainers wanted STV Fenian Head(s) to Roll…

It was VERY Funny…the Huns getting Gubbed at home, jock Wallace in a raging Huff…and the Picture of the Crucifix, made for a VERY Entertaining night for us Tims.

    LOL

    HH Mate.

  9. I THINK it was a BLACK Crucifix with a GREEN Background that was briefly shown. I still dont know whether the STV Culprit(s) were ever caught and sacked ?

the next day while at work and reading about the STV Phones lines being SWAMPED with Complaints from angry Huns, I also was asking some Huns in my work….” Are you a Christian…do you believe in God…..IF so…why does the Picture of Christ on the Cross anger you lot so MUCH” ?

Of course the Huns at work couldnt provide an answer.

I worked all day laughing at that Mob.

    ……………

Sorry mate but you are wrong.

1969 the Huns were playing Gornik of Poland over Two Legs.

The first leg finished 3-1 to Gornik in Poland.

The 2nd Leg at Ipox ALSO finished 3-1 to the Poles, and I SHOULD KNOW, cos I was there with my Da. He was ” Pally” with Derek Johnstone, and Johnstone had given my Da Two FREE Tickets for the Ipox Main Stand.

Me and my Da couldnt help laugh like Feck, as the Poles destroyed the Huns at Ipox. Gornik had a player called ” LUBANSKI or Lubinski ?), and he terrorised the Huns that night and scored TWO Goals.

I think the Huns Derek Johnstone scored FIRST at Ipox to get the Huns right back into the Tie…but then the Poles ran RIOT and me and my Da couldnt celebrate properly cos of all the Huns around us in the Main Stand. LOL.

The Huns manager ” Davie White” was SACKED the very next morning, DESPITE the Huns sitting at the Top of the Scottish League undefeated ( IF I remember correctly ?), as the Huns couldnt handle being beaten 6- on Aggregate and outplayed by those pesky Poles.

The defeat against Cologne was MUCH Later ( early 1980’s), with the Crucifix being the main news story the next day.

I couldnt be at Ipox for the Huns v Gornik in 1969, AND in my Hoose watching TV and seeing the Crucifix Onscreen , at the same time.

Obviously, the night of the Crucifix was NOT an International match…it was the Huns against FC Cologne ( I am NOT 100% sure that it was Cologne, but Im pretty sure it was a German team the night Jock Wallace had a Hissy Huff) .

As a young 13 going on 14 year old, I admired Gorniks strip that night…White Jerseys, Red Collar and Cuffs, with another RED Stripe running down both sleeves.

    Trust me…I WAS THERE !

So Jesus of Naz had nothing to do with the Crucifix being shown on TV….sorry.

The Gornik games were years BEFORE…..in 1969…..and the game against FC Cologne was around the early 1980’s when Jock Wallace was manager of Leicester City. The HOME Kit of Leicester City when Wallace was manager was almost IDENTICAL to the Huns HOME Top in the late 1970’s/1980’s.

I can concur with BIG JIMMY wrt the Cologne game being in eithe 1979 or 1980 (the brain gets a wee bit befuddled when you get older).

I came back from a 4 day field trip at Millport that same day and spent the afternoon in my bed sleeping off all that “studying”. Got up in time to watch the huns getting gubbed on the telly – happy days. I seem to recall some wee Japanese guy playing for Cologne at the time and he was also a fairly decent player.

I also seem to recall that it was heavy snow in April that had caused the game to be postponed by a day?

Incidentally, I used to stay in the Broomloan Road flats and could hear the “roars” from the crowd. Big roar equated to huns goal, wee roar equated to away team goal.

If things were “sounding good”, I would often wander in for the last 20 minutes – just to cheer myself up.

Huns v Cologne. March 1979, they lost 1-0 away and were full of themselves after beating Juventus and PSV.

Cologne scored early at Ibrox and killed the tie.

The break in transmission saw the Jesus of Nazareth trailer be screened and yes they went nuts.

Big Jimmy is right. The game was played the Thursday due to snow on the Wednesday.

The Huns could play Cologne at Ibrox but couldn’t play us there due to rebuilding work. They were due to play us at Hampden in a league game scheduled for the Saturday but had it postponed Friday lunchtime on the basis the Celtic End was unsafe with snow.

The Huns then scheduled a Glasgow Cup tie with PT for Ibrox for the Saturday. We suspected they didn’t want to play us. They had the game postponed until mid May and beat us 1-0. This gave them a lead in the title race meaning we needed to win every game inc the 4-2 game to win the title.
