Celtic, or Wales, against the world

597

I read Wales defender Connor Roberts say “99% of the world” will support Denmark in their last 16 tie tomorrow and thought- the underdog, fighting against the crowd.  99% of the world will not support Denmark, not me, for a start, but the ‘us against the world’ narrative is one of my favourites.

As a rallying call, it is surely more effective than the alternative.  Today’s footballer is an immensely well catered for athlete, apart from his 90 minutes on the park and (relatively few) hours on the training field, he will struggle for little.  What does he have to fight against, if not perceived ranks of people wanting him to lose?

Beaten, humiliated in Europe, trophy-less, written-off by many among our own, singled-out by the Government.  Ange Postecoglou will not have to work hard to convince the players is really is them against the world.  This squad really does have plenty to fight against.

I would say the poll was either fixed or there were no other contenders put forward.

I know you know that all he does is state the obvious, no insight or thought provoking analysis. All rubber stamped with his usual…”honestly” “I’m sure you’ll agree” “as we all know” and so on

31003-I have to admit I liked him on a question of sport. It was only when he went back to them that I took a dislike to the cant 😉

Still think him and Lenny will end up a double act🤷🏽‍♂️

I think I have seen in some of your posts that you either are or were a cyclist. If that is the case, I am assuming that the `Coppi` part of your Blog name refers to the great Fausto Coppi. If so, where does the `four stone` part come in?

  4. 31003 and GREENPINATA.

Whilst in agreement thay McCoist is useless, I don`t think many of the football pundits and commentators are particularly good. I watch the Tour de France ( and the other big Tours) and find the commentators informative, knowledgeable and entertaining. I have only heard one who disappoints .He had a tendency to try to make EVERY burst of speed sensational when many were nothing of the sort. I cannot remember his name but he did commentate on the Giro.

Yep still cycling and hacking (literally) up the campsies lol.

It was a nickname given to the late great Tom Simpson, who when a 15 year old, joined the Harworth and District Cycling Club he was so scrawny that they nicknamed him Four-Stone Coppi, after the Italian cycling legend Fausto Coppi

McMoist was well described by a poster on here as a total scunner of a man ! Apt description I would say, can’t remember who the poster was but we’ll said that man !

Thanks for that. I am, of course, aware of Tommy Simpson but I wasn`t aware of the four stone quip.

PS I could see the Campsies from my bedroom window in Barmulloch . We sometimes cycled out to Campsie Glen but the Crow Road was saved for when I had grown up. ie 15 :-))

  8. For me, the word `chancer` was created for people like McCoist.

PS Although a phoney, I agree that he was quite good on Question of Sport. IMO of course.

  9. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX & SAINT STIVS:

First up, I am a critic of the decision to hire Agne Postecoglou, and I don’t believe he should be near Celtic Park. But I want him to succeed as much as anyone else on this blog. He answered every question on Friday and alievated a lot of my concerns in terms of where his responsibilities started and stopped.

I had a series of questions I wanted to ask him; every one of them was asked before I got up. We get accused, all the time, of being relentlessly negative … had we gone in there and hammered those two guys before they even have their feet under their desks, we’d have been criticised for that.

Now it’s criticism for giving them a free ride.

The bloggers aren’t going to satisfy some people. I long ago realised that Celtic cyberspace is made up of people who have an overt hostility to what I do no matter how I do it. Some people appear to resent that the bloggers even exist.

If you want to know why the CSA weren’t represented, that’s a laugh. They had their meetings. You know how much we know about them? Nothing, and they chose that themselves.

    https://thecelticblog.com/2021/06/articles-and-features/why-did-some-fan-groups-decide-to-keep-meetings-with-celtic-a-secret

That’s today’s latest on that subject. I got slagged for the first piece I wrote on it last month, and that story has been vindicated.

It is neither my job to blow smoke up the clubs arse nor keep it permanently on its toes. It is my job to report back on what I see, and this notion that any of us want to be the sole means by which the club communicates with the fans is arrant nonsense, and a slur on every one of us.

But then, as I said, a lot of people would rather none of us existed. Perhaps some would prefer that Paul67 be the only voice amongst our ranks.

The hardest part about this job has ALWAYS been the negative feedback from fellow Celtic fans. I have spent the whole of the summer – I have spent the last eight months – criticisng the club non-stop. The club doesn’t have a problem with that because the club realises that I do it because I care about Celtic. If they think – if anyone thinks – myself or the other bloggers can be cheaply bought I suggest they are in for a surprise.

I wanted to know that the manager is devoted to excellence and high standards, and to using every modern means at his disposal to maximise his chances of success. I thought that was a perfectly good question. I wanted to remind McKay that reforming Celtic is only part of his job. I also wanted him to know that we’ve not missed the fact that he’s taken what plan existed under Lawwell and binned it.

SFA reform has been at the centre of almost everything I’ve written in the last decade. That I got to inform the CEO that this is important stuff, important enough that I devoted my question to the subject ,is a big deal. I have no intention of letting up on it either.

McKay is impressive because he’s leading from the front. He’s opening himself to scrutiny and this is the first meeting of many. I want a chance to grill him properly and I’m told that I’ll get it. Perhaps I should have gone in there and said to the new manager “Welcome to Celtic, I think you’re in the wrong job,” but I thought my readers would rather know where he stands on improving the coaching and technical side of the club. Maybe I should have said to McKay “the last guy drove me to the point of protesting in the carpark and so I don’t trust you at all” but I reckon a new man with a new plan should get a chance.

Like I said, some folk will complain no matter what I do and no matter what I write and that goes for every single one of the bloggers. People don’t like that we exist at all. I accepted it a long time ago.

    But you’re right.

They WILL become a double act for sports dinners and the like.

They’ll both become multi-billionaires and thank the footballing gods they gave them the vehicle to become Scotland’s and Northern Ireland’s answer to little and large

  17. DID ANYONE REMEBER YOUNG EDDIE MCGINNIS IN OATLANDS ?

Large was born Edward Hugh McGinnis in Glasgow in 1941.[1] His father Teddy served as a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy during World War II and after he returned from the war the family moved to a tenement in Oatlands.[2] When he was nine years old, the family moved again to Manchester, where he attended Claremont Road Primary School[3] and a grammar school.[4] He played football as a schoolboy, becoming a supporter of nearby Manchester City which had its ground opposite his home,[5] and he maintained a lifelong devotion to the club. After he left school, he worked as an electrician and was a singer.[6]

  21. SAINT STIVS on 27TH JUNE 2021 6:37 PM

There are many interesting monikers on here whose origins I cannot even guess at.I would normally enquire about unknowns but, for some reason, I just accept monikers as they are which is unusual for me.

PS I don`t know what Saint Stivs stands for but I am guessing something to do with St Stephen and school?

  22. Tell you what, I won’t lie to you, McCoist is not the best commentator. One cliché after another. To tell you the truth, I’ve got to be honest with you, he’s very, very irritating. Very much so. Dearie me, let me tell you, I have to tell you at this moment in time, I think he’s over-rated. Make no mistake about it, that’s for sure. Absolutely! I’ll tell you that right now. You’d better believe it!
