Celtic set to match and beat Scottish consecutive trophy record

316

As you know, Celtic have won six consecutive trophies. This had been achieved three times before in Scottish football, by Celtic in 1905-09, Rangers in 1963-65 and again by Rangers in 1992-94.  On the latter occasion, Rangers established a new record of seven consecutive domestic trophies.

Win on Sunday and we match Rangers’ record from the (painful) 90s, but that would set up this season’s League title as a new record decider.

The 1909 Scottish Cup was withheld after crowd trouble after the Celtic-Rangers final reply ended in a draw.  Celtic missed out on making it seven trophies in a row when Dundee won the 1910 Scottish Cup five days before Celtic secured the league title.

Those dark days in the 90s were hard.  Celtic were an afterthought for most fo the country, a sporting irrelevance.  Sunday is a chance to exorcise those dark days.

  1. My father always saw a connection between the ‘right to buy’ scheme by Thatcher and a diminuation in the power of the unions. The working class folk became mortgage holders instead of council rent payers. Also responsible for repairs and maintenance. Some might even have aspirations towards middle class status.

The ability of tenants to buy the council houses they lived in.

    Often at bargain prices.

    Did that work ?

    —————————/

No it didn’t. That was the start of the housing and homeless crisis in the UK. The invisibles are literally dying on the streets of Glasgow thanks to that policy. This is one hobby horse you don’t want me to get on!

  3. How many council tenants had house insurance? There are lots of financial burdens owning your home, which is fine. But would you be inclined to strike they way folk were in 70s?

  4. If anyone wants to tinker around the fringes of the benefits of selling off council housing stock I am more than willing to meet up to disabuse them of that opinion. It’s was and still is the most divisive and destructive housing policy ever introduced to this country.

Ask the countless veterans and young people who are homeless; those who have no access to socially rented housing; those stuck in the private rented sector; those struggling to meet the payments on their mortgage.

Simple question – what have we replaced social responsibility with?

  5. The right to buy was all political. A sea change by Thatcher. Its hard to believe that after the war especially in the 1960s the Tories and Labour tried to outdo each other in election promises. ‘We will ensure 1 million new council houses’ v ‘we will build 1 and a quarter million new council houses’. How were we able to afford that then, but cant now? Mind you, that was back in the day when a company director might have earned about 20x the average wage in his firm. Today? try 200x plus.

Hard to believe nowadays. As has been said we wonder why their is so much homelessness.

My dad was a Red Clydeside Man.

He predicted the housing crisis, homelessness and a huge growing army of folk in the city centre in sleeping bags. They will soon be mortuary body bags Frank. I need to help them but there are too many for me to help.

  7. DD I used to lecture in housing in the ‘90s. I told those working fir the council that within 19 years or so council owned housing would disappear. They laughed out loud. They are not laughing now. Neither am I!

The solution to the housing crisis ?

Local authorities to build more social and affordable housing surely ???

  9. WITS one of the tragedies of the sale of council housing was that the receipts from the sales were unable to be used to provide more housing stock.

Morally reprehensible and a scourge to the working classes and the aspiring middle classes.

I am now watching the 5-1 game from April 2017 in full screen HD.

And Griffiths has just scored a beauty to make it 2-0.

  11. The sad thing is council housing was not a drain on councils, it was profitable!

For round figures, say £100 pw for 48 weeks per year = 4,800 pa. Times 40 years (min) tenancy = £192000. Cost to build? £70k? (Remember I’m talking COST)

So after selling off council housing stock, the councils found themselves unable to provide more/replacement houses to the next generation and effectively stopped doing so.

I still maintain that the problem is not necessarily the selling off of housing stock but the lack of replacement stock.

That to me (the lack of replacement/new houses) is an idelogical issue and not a financial issue.

We live in a very prosperous society.Money can be found to build houses if the political will is there.

  13. I saw a wee bit of the Spurs win earlier.

They have a beast of a midfielder who broke forward to set up their goal.

He is obviously keeping Wanyama out the side. What a player.

    Anyone know who he is?

We have a situation here (in the republic of southern eire) where government funding is paid directly to private landlords to assist renters who cant afford to rent privately and who havent got access to council houses.

This costs the government multiple millions yearly. If they invested in building council houses it would make much more economic sense.

Its right wing ideology thats the problem

    Reduce the demand.

AND reduce the queues for the medic.

AND cater FIRST for those who have paid taxes for precisely those benefits.

    Some over many years.

Would that not be fair . Reasonable. Decent ?

  17. WIST, Private landlords, the world over are known to be a scourge on society on so many levels. At least with council housing the public had scrutiny and a vote every 4 years or so.

  18. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

    Bewildering.

Where did your left wing ideology which has been around since Marx actually work ?

There is a place in society for private landlords. They aren’t all evil monsters who prey on defenceless widows and orphans, but an over dependence on them is not good.

In my humble opinion the state has a duty of care towards its citizens and providing basic necessities like education health care and housing are surely the foundation for building a healthy and prosperous society.

Failing that we should buy children from parents who cant afford to look after them and turn them into gourmet burgers which could be sold to Russian oligarchs and Saudi princes in 5 star restaurants at exorbitant prices.

The children of immigrants especially, that would teach them!!!
