Celtic, the Bank of England of investment opportunities

595

Celtic are an astonishing 1/200 to win the Premiership this season; 11 games into a 38 game competition. 1/200 isn’t betting odds, it’s a borrowing strategy. The bookies are borrowing money at 0.5% for six months, an annual rate of 1%. Try borrowing at better rates than that.

Investors get a 1% tax free savings rate, which is also competitive, although they don’t get access to their money for six months without significant penalty. If borrowing rates were higher, returns offered on Celtic would improve to attract more investors. The Scottish Premiership has jumped from being a sporting event to being an investment opportunity less volatile than gold or property.

The 10 point gap between Celtic and second placed Aberdeen is the same 10 points as between Aberdeen and bottom club Ross County. We are metaphorically in a different league than even our closest challengers.

Question is, how did Celtic become the Bank of England of football? It’s not just because they are financially responsible with appropriate oversights, this helps. More importantly, they have used their financial strength to fortify the competitive product on the park. Others have been in similar situations in previous decades without the oversight, which led to enormously entertaining failure.

It might look like Brendan Rodgers has achieved alchemy over a sleeping dinosaur, but he’s only part of the story, albeit an important part. Much of the groundwork was in place when he arrived. Nine of those who started the League Cup semi-final were at the club last season, they were just not nearly as effective.

Brendan’s building on rock solid foundations. That’s what you need to build generations of domination.

I saint would have ended up a martyr if he was up against the enemies Celtic had.

We needed a street fighter and we got one.

Football tradition led us to the eve of destruction , even BD eventually realised that.

Never, in the history of the club, has so much been done for under privileged people at home and worldwide, as is being done today.

This is happening via the Celtic Foundation., which is a collaboration between the club and our universal support.

This would never happen under any other circumstance.

For an historian, I’m afraid your world view sometimes clouds the reality of a situation.

A fatal flaw, in my view.

    Pretty good analogy really

The Celtic share issue of 1994 was the most successful football share issue in the history of the game.

That was down to Fergus McCann’s brilliant business acumen and organisational skills right down the loan you got to get your shares on tic(K) via the Co-operative Bank.

Sorry but if they’re getting up for ‘bums off seats’ moments I think that’s fair enough.

I had this concern too (until mine decided it was mostly too cold, and a bit boring so decided to give up). However, I’m wasn’t in a ‘family section’ so I basically decided I had to live with it. Especially since pre taking the boys, I’d been known to use the occasional bliddy and flip, so I didn’t really want to be hypocritical.

Dont you think im well aware of the charitable ethos of Celtic.

    That is a given.

However….lets get it right, Fergus might be many things….but undoubtedly was a financial speculator who used Celtic as a vehicle to enrich himself….that is the bottom line.

No amount of mythology will change the reality.

Yes, I know what you mean. I just ration the games he goes too – no hearts, dons, euro games and certainly no sevco.

plus with the winter drawing in, he’ll be wearing ear muffs.

I then compared Fergus to Stalin.

A football stadium is no place for that kind of behaviour.

  11. As I posted earlier, all was told, nothing was hidden, it was a business deal, and we where in on it, everyone knew the score, no smoke no mirrors, the man took an opportunity to run it and guided us through it,

Packed his hankie as he said he would, and done a Dick Whittington with his wee bundle of money, we all knew it,

    I’m missing something TGM?

You make it sound as if making a return on his investment of his money plus five years of his life is a bad thing.

I suppose you have the same view of someone putting a line on at the bookies and walking off with a profit?

    I know, borderline facetious.

The charitable ethos of the club had been largely abandoned from within Celtic Park .

It was the support, through their basic Christian ethos that kept it alive.

We now have an effective cohesive amalgamation of the club and support which is reaching places never imagined previously.

Our Foundation work is coordinated and we are getting the best bang for our buck.

If Fergus’ motives were purely speculative and for profit, as he said himself, there were other

safer ways to invest most of his life savings than in a failing football club, with no guarantee of even getting control of the club.

…..and that ,mon ami, IS the bottom line.

If Fergus had walked away having lost his £9m but left us with a vastly improved team and infrastructure,I think he would have been wondering where he went wrong.

He didn’t. He told us from day one what his plans were. They involved his £9m,but didn’t include losing it.

Let’s say Fergus was four times better off when he left than when he arrived.

How many times better off were Celtic at that stage?

No Fergus,no Celtic,IMO. The job needed done without recourse to committee. It needed a single-minded hard-nosed belligerent wee bastard. And we got the top of that pile.

  15. Weeminger

I think we all know and enjoy the ‘bums off seats’ moments. Not one other person moved out of their seats in the build up, except my friend in front of me who blocked my view and the view of the 12 year old behind me. He stands up to barrack the officials (and selected players) he stands up to shout at opposition players – I’m sure you would agree those are not ‘bums off seats’ moments.

  23. Fergus did what we needed and created the foundation of where we are now for a huge profit.

    I don’t begrudge him that.

My one criticism is i feel if he had backed Tommy Burns a little better they may not have got the nine in a row despite their cheating.

We were short in one or two areas and though signings do not guarantee success i think Burns would have succeeded.
