Celtic train rolls on as January signings shine again

240

The Celtic train rolled on against Hibernian last night.  Only a reckless late lunge on Emilio Izaguirre caused Brendan Rodgers any concern.  The prospects of Jonny Hayes at left back against Valencia one week today, or worse, a midfield without Callum McGregor, who is drafted into defence, are not inspiring.

Two of the three teams below dropped points.  Kilmarnock and Aberdeen now have 11 points to make up, while Newco have six.  When league duties resume in 10 days we return to Rugby Park, scene of Kilmarnock’s late win over the champions earlier this season.  Europe distracted Celtic on that occasion.  The next Killie game is sandwiched between matches against Valencia.  I could make the case that the visit to Ayrshire is more important than the trip to Spain.

I liked Jeremy Toljan.  He adds a speed of thought to our forward play that was missing on the right.  Much of the good passing broke down at the edge of the box, no doubt a consequence of having new faces in the striker role(s).  The impact last month’s additions are having are pronounced; still more will come.

You should only question the commitment of professionals with good evidence, but last night’s Hibs team were not sufficiently attentive looking.  They turned up for the physical challenge, but were passed through regularly.  It looks like the renascence, when they could boss any team in the league, is over.

  1. Watching the game last night looked more like the Invincibles…Hungry, tenacious and full of east end Glesga swagger.

    More of the same, please!

  2. So compliant ( no spellchecker) officer not interested in someone, who was banned from international football for life, attempting to break someone’s leg and not for the first time.

When said GK played for RIFCL he attempted to seriously injure another player. This was his assault on Jambo’s player Calum Elliot. He has plenty of previous. He is a disgrace to football.

I will be the first to admit that I didn’t always see the true value of Calum McGregor .. partly, I think he was not being played in the right position, plus, I do have the sense that, after his arrest, he put his head down, and has become a much more mature person, both on and off the pitch.

It was once said when Bobby Murdoch plays, Celtic plays. I am not saying that he is at the same level as BM, but I a, getting the same feeling about CMcG; his passing game is integral to the way we play; when CMcG plays, Celtic plays.

Two paragraphs to say you were wrong, Mike. You weren’t the only one. People on here cited him as evidence of how rotten Celtic had become under Deila.

Another thing, Bobby Murdoch wasn’t an instant success. ‘Not Celtic class’ some of our gurus said.

Bobby would have loved to have had Callum’s pace.

Ref Simunovic’s challenge last night I found it on Celtic TV’s recording on 1st half. 43 mins in.

I agree, Jozo led with his arm & he’d usually be lucky to escape with no action taken against him, particularly since he’s got previous (against the Colombian – ‘Red Card, Red Card’).

His arm up prevented both players’ heads coming together for the ball but….

Craig Thomson stopped play because it was a head injury but gave no foul.

Not sure what the brief is for these things if the ref sees it or includes it in his report.

Which takes it on to the other challenge at Pittodrie last night.

Has McGregor’s challenge been referred or is that another one where the referee claims to have seen it & taken no action?

If this evening things out is to be believed then McGregor’s has to referred.

It’ll be interesting to see how the referees’ reports for each incident impact on what options are available in the event that McGregor’s kick is referred.

Did Thomson see Jozo’s & was it in his report.

Did Madden see McGregor’s (could hardly say he didn’t) & was it in his report?

Clare Whyte seems to have a poisoned chalice to drink from.

  5. Morelos’ appeal is certain to be successful. All he has to do is cite a similar, or arguably, worse decision earlier in the season where he put his boot through our captain’s nether regions but learned that that was allowable or the kick out in the first Aberdeen game where his red card was over turned. “You can’t treat Morelos any differently from either Morelos or that other guy, what’s his name, aye, Morelos…” will be the logical claim.

    ps good evening, friends.

  6. Picture on the website of the organization that lost the 2nd half of the 7-1 game shows the moron writhing away holding his face while our future centre half has his arm outstretched to balance himself, looks like he may have slapped the talcum powder sniffer, I supposed that’s the intention.

Not just simu, apparently OB penalty/trip/dive (see it as they may) has also been referred to compliance officer, with hun scum goalie being referred too.

  12. Embdae think the Simunovic /Burke bollox would be brought up,if the assaults by Moreloss and McShagger didn’t happen?….of course not

  13. So if they do one they will do all, justice Scottish Football style, I wonder what BR’s true feelings on refereeing are as he seems extremely laid back almost to the point of not caring, and people say this is not what he really means. I take people by what the say, I don’t read between the lines when he waffles on.

  14. DubaiBhoy (nee LondonBhoy) on

Being completely honest, Jozo was lucky to have escaped a red card last night. Broony also had a questionable tackle late on. I’ve also seen Burke’s penalty claim and it looks to me like a dive. So maybe we get away with the odd one here and there as well.

    No chance.

You can just smell the “oh but the Celtic players got off too” in the air.

Just like the start of the season when Brown got cited for blocking off Naismith just after MoreLoss got cleared.

Well done to the guy for being brave enough to fight back when encouragement was offered to him, and for telling his story so honestly, in the knowledge that it may help others.

I hope the SFA have another Time to Talk Day, but in their case without the forked tongues for once.

    Good video.

I noticed they didn’t include the language breakdown between John Ledwith & Jeremy Toljan.

John interviewed BR & the two players. After asking Broonie a couple of easy ones he asked Jeremy a question. The sort of longer one that starts with a statement then ends up as question.

Jeremy looked at him for about 5 seconds and said politely, words to the effect…

“I’ve no idea what you just said.”

Broonie sniggered but both John & jeremy handled it well.

They’ll be expanding the Compliance Section at the SFA soon.

Too much work for one person & one committee.

It looks like the suggestion is that trhere were no other incidents in the 4 other games last night that required referral.

    Unless I’m speaking too soon…

Quite how Morelos’s sustained & 2 stage studs kick into McKenna’s nether regions cannot be a confirmed red is impossible to imagine. From the video evidence his foot appears to lands there accidently, he keeps it there putting weight on it, then as McKenna pushes his foot at Morelos to push him off his nuts, Morelos goes in for part 2 of the kick/stamping on that area.

I hope somebody has some calm me down pills ready for Chris Sutton is this is overturned.
