  1. Lennybhoy, I’ll catch up with him later. I’m onto my mate in Melbourne who thinks he played at Eastercraigs at the same time

  2. NegAnon2 Curtains for the complicit board perhaps but Celtic will always be.

We are Celtic every one of us.

  3. NegAnon 2.

    Wishful thinking?

    Your opinion. Mine differs.

A lot is being made of a situation and those that do not support Celtic and indeed wish to do the Club damage are obviously keen to foment as much trouble as possible.

    An obvious strategy.

I’m not saying we don’t have issues, as fans, shareholders whatever but our opponents in their various guises have a natural in-bred inclination to be anti- Celtic. The realm of social media is an obvious target for their agenda.

    Are we sitting pretty, no.

But we are in a battle with huge disadvantages borne of establishment bias and hunned-up skulduggery – we’ll come out better united and thems know it, so I’m always wary of their divide and conquer supremacist mentality.

If flying ‘any’ flag is banned in Perth, then no Celtic fan attends the match……seems straightforward……that’s gives ALL Celtic fans the opportunity / space to fully review the overall situation……seems very strange that (even) Celtic fans coming over from Ireland would be banned from flying the Irish Tricolour…….. I see Irish Tricolours being displayed at Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal etc games…….there must be more to this?…….is it being linked somehow to the flares / smoke bombs..? …….if so, how…?

  6. From 2011 an article produced re Hearts and the red hand of Ulster flag.

    ScotzineJun 04,2011

Hearts have warned their fans that they could be arrested if they wave the Red Hand of Ulster flag at Tynecastle. Vladimir Romanov’s club are to send letters to all Hearts supporters outlining their concerns over the flag being used in an inciteful manner.

Hearts have issued a clear statement, which states that anyone, including visiting supporters, who wave the Red Hand of Ulster flag will face arrest.

Hearts Chief Executive David Southern speaking at the Tynecastle side’s AGM yesterday, said: “What happened in that May game can never happen again. All we are asking is what are the reasons for the colours you’re flying at Tynecastle? As regards the Union Jack, there is no club that deserves the right to fly the Union Jack more than Hearts given the sacrifices of our players. We would never ban the Union Jack. But it’s been hijacked and it can be hijacked by a minority of our supporters. We need to be very careful of that.

“As regards the Red Hand of Ulster, quite frankly there is no relevance of that flag at this ground, unless you’re from Ulster Hearts Supporters’ Club, which I believe exists. You can’t be arrested for having a flag or being in possession of a flag unless it’s a prescribed flag.”

While waving a flag of any nation is certainly not an arrestable offence, Southern explains how fans would fall into an arrestable offence for waving the flag.

Southern added: “What you can be arrested for is waving it in an inciteful manner. If it’s used in an inciteful manner to intimidate away fans at Tynecastle, or when we travel, those responsible will be arrested.”

Commenting on the attack [no alleged about it] on Celtic manager Neil Lennon, Southern said that he would be ‘aghast’ if they faced sanctions from the SPL.

Southern told the AGM: “We’ve spent the last four or five weeks in detailed discussions with the SPL, police and stewarding companies in every effort to try to reduce the sanctions the club may face. We did everything in advance of the game that we possibly could. We’d be aghast if the SPL came back and said there was a hefty fine on its way or anything worse than that. Because of the person who ran on, we’re going to make the entire lower main stand a season-ticket holder only area.”

It was also announced at the AGM that the fan who attacked Neil Lennon obtained a ticket from a season ticket holder, and that Season Ticket Holder will be banned for 12 home games. There will be ‘clear zones’ around the dugouts also to prevent any repeat of the Neil Lennon attack.

The Red Hand of Ulster flag was the official flag that was used to represent the Government of Northern Ireland from 1953 to 1973, but is no longer an official flag representing the state. However it is still carried by the Northern Ireland team in the Commonwealth games opening ceremony. The flag is widely used by Unionists and Loyalists within the state.

The official flag of Northern Ireland is the Union Jack, although there is the Flag of Ulster, which now represents the state.

David Miller, Sociology Professor from Strathclyde University in Scotland said of the Red Hand flag: “Like the swastika, the red hand is a symbol that has been misappropriated. It is the symbol of the unionists and is certainly not signed up to by the majority….”

This latest ‘can of worms’ which is certain to explode, mirrors that of the campaign by the SFA in the 1950s and the Tory Government in the 1980s to ban the Irish tricolor from Parkhead.

In 1952 Celtic were ordered to take town the Irish Tricolour, after a riot between Celtic and Rangers fans at a New Year derby game at Parkhead, was partly blamed by the SFA on the Parkhead club’s tradition of flying the Irish tricolor above the Jungle.

Magistrates in Glasgow became embroiled in the issue and made recommendations to the SFA and the Scottish Football League, which included a ban on flags which may incite trouble.

The SFA tried to enforce the ban, but Celtic took exception to the rule, pointing out that the Irish tricolor flew beside many other flags at Parkhead, including the Saltire. The issue was discussed by the SFA Referees’ committee, but the Celtic chairman at the time, Robert Kelly, refused to comply with removal of the Tricolor.

The failure to enforce the ban was down to two points. The clubs were brought into the issue to vote on the expulsion of the Celtic support, with Rangers had the deciding vote. The Ibrox club backed Celtic’s stance and the ban failed. Many believe that the ban was not pushed through because the clubs realised that they would lose significant amounts of money in gate receipts if the fans were banned.

In the early 1980s, Margaret Thatcher’s Tory government discussed the possible forced removal of the Irish Tricolor from Celtic Park. Conservative ministers came to the conclusion that while the flying of the Tricolor could constitute ‘tacit support’ for the Provisional IRA, it fell outside the Government’s control. Plans to remove the tricolor were shelved shortly thereafter.

While this time it is Hearts, the club, taking a stance rather than the Official Football authorities. Currently stewards from Rock Steady at Tynecastle enforce an unofficial Tricolor ban, stating that said flags confiscated were not fireproof.

With the news that the club are set to take a hard-line approach on those waving the Red Hand of Ulster flag, both home and away supporters, it could produce flash points between stewards, police and the fans. And could lead to certain supports calling for a boycott of Hearts games if they are subjected to arrests for merely waving a flag.

  7. Corkcelt I am not naive enough to think a total boycott would happen but we can hurt them in the only place that matters to them. In the pocket. It will also gather momentum.

T shirts would soon be banned under the OB (I am not kidding about that we have no idea how far this will go given tricolours are now banned).

We could start wearing different scarves but celtic would probably be happy with that as long as they could sell em and make some money on them.

I had quite a few run ins with some of them when I was younger, had a few stays in hospital because of some of them, but I still don’t hate them, I hate the ruling system and I find those who make money from the hatred, and they are many, I think them repulsive.

If you, or any other, chooses to hate them that is up to you, you have your reasons and I’ll be damned if I’ll be fool to judge them but my reasons for not hating them is simply a hope that the cycle of hate will end but it can’t ever end unless somewhere, somebody, refuses to accept the hate as part of daily life, like milk in your tea.

They hurt me in the past, no big deal, it is what hurts lurk in the future that scares me, and the hurt will only be mine emotionally and psychologically. If people are making money out of that blood and pain, and they are, every news-stand screams it at you, then they need to be accountable, regardless of their address.

  13. Big nan. I think it’s much more serious than even just the current board. If we find out that the game is rigged then it’s game over for football in Scotland.

  14. corkcelt- SUPPORTING THE DAM 5 on

Don’t normally sing from same hymn sheet as you bankie but I do agree with the gist of your last post. The problem as I see it is that the most of us have become older, have a few bob in our pockets and the revolutionary zeal of our youth is buried under layers of fat. Its the kids of today have been to the fore in protests and just as we had no sense back then, they have no sense now and whilst their hearts are in the right place they continue to score own goals. Real progress will not be made until we the “Celtic Middle Class” decide we have had enough and rediscover the zeal of our youth.

Or is there a Robert the Bruce out there who can UNITE us?

  17. 67 heaven I am nigh on 40 years a celtic fan. Like all of you I have gone through the ups and downs. But this situation is by far the most serious I have ever encountered because this isn’t just about football. This is about racism. Open and festering racism which is being supported by our club. So I don’t care whether you think I will lose all credibility because at the end of the day if we tolerate this then our children will be next……

  18. Gordon J – all the promoted police officers I know believe PS is a good idea, though privately they accept that it would have been difficult to implement it more badly than has been witnessed. The cost savings that the analysis provided were such that it would have been financially irresponsible not to proceed, and while I personally agree with your view on House and the implications of having him as CC, it’s hardly a reason not to change the set-up. He was already CC for Strathclyde, which is where I would guess most of the people on here live, so PS shouldn’t make any difference from that point of view.

For me, the size of the country and the access to modern comms and other technology are such that a single force, over time, will be a huge improvement on the previous set-up.

The management structure will make spreading best practice a cleaner process, and opportunities for learning will be increased too.

I honestly don’t believe that accountability is an issue either. The new structure will be much more transparent and obvious to the public, and accountability will be far more concentrated and directed than before. In five years time, anyone looking back on the previous set-up will wonder why it wasn’t ditched earlier – I’m certain of that.

“Robert Kelly his stand during the Irish flag affair in 1952 was probably his finest moment, where he stood up proudly to the bigots and simpletons who were trying to equate the hoisting of the Irish flag to being a sectarian icon! Complete nonsense of a situation in reflection, however it was a serious issue in the environment at the time and it took a strong and brave stance from Bob Kelly to take on the establishment ”

  20. I’m going to be away from CQN and the internet over the next few days so I would like to wish Paul and everyone here a happy, healthy and safe Christmas.

Merry Christmas and I hope Santa is good to you.

  21. Good morning from a pulsing heid, the game yesterday was as flat as pancake, as was the atmosphere!

My son was in the north stand with his mate and my daughter in the main stand with her friend.

I was in the number seven with my mates.

That is three areas of the stadium covered, yep, I got wined and dined and I suppose that softened the blow of watching the game in an atmosphere similar to a morgue.

I can only speak from the point of view of my family…

The GB, got a bit too big for their boots and discussion should have been engaged to clarify what is allowed to the nearest mark without it being illegal in the eyes of what is becoming a police state within football grounds.

My son and daughter may drift from going to celtic park, due to what they believe, that Celtic is not supporting their own support.

Myself and my daughter on different occasions yesterday, gave food parcels to members of the GB who looked chilled to the bone.

They are Celtic fans…maybe a bit more raucous than us oldies on here…we were young once. Let the young ones sing and light up paradise within means, don’t chases our future fanbase away.

  22. Morning my friends in Celtic,

Reading back with a thumping sore head, I have a few observations.

NegAnon2 talks about boycotting Celtic, judging by the “crowd” yesterday I thought that had already started.

The flag issue taken on its own is no big deal for a one off game, however we are under attack from our own government using the vehicle of the OB act.

Wake up guys and ghirls, we are under attack and we are being defeated. An unfortunate consequence of “Rangers” demise is that IMO we are being slowly dragged down with them.

I acknowledge that this is the age of TV, but football without fans is nothing. We must stop posturing to fans who never darken the gates at Parkhead but will criticise anything and everything. All fans have a right to speak out on any issue, but we must give priority to those who actually attend games.

Yesterday’s game at 12.15 hrs was a ludicrous time. Maybe great for the house or the pub but not for attending.

The last Saturday shopping day before Christmas.

    The horrendous weather.

Having to travel early the next morning after the busiest pub day of the year. ( Mad Friday ).

IMO a combination of the above and the effect the OB act is having ensured

    a pathetic crowd.

Maybe I’m being slightly paranoid here with a sore head after all, but all the fencing around Parkhead reminds me of heading Cattle.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

PS : I now know why many of our players wear fluorescent boots, its to identify them when they go invisible.

  23. Police Scotland have had problems recently with ‘evidence gathering’ due to flag waving during songs they would like to find offensive. Maybe a coincidence.

    Just saying like.

Anyway, I’ve got a family brunch today for my wife and my family at noon at my house. About 20 people. We will hug each other and tell each other how much we love them. We will swap Christmas presents and tell stories of what’s happened since we last met. We will talk about our dearly departed Mums and Dad’s, sister’s and neice’s.

There will be loads of laughter and maybe a few tears.

    Celtic won’t get a mention.

It will be a wonderful day.

  25. NegAnon2

The struggle is between perception and reality imo.

If you start by believing a concerted effort to make the very most out of football/ society related issues, but lay the blame at Celtic’s door…………

How everyone feels is their opinion, quite rightly, and vis-a-vis the bored there will be a lot of opinions, and of all shades.

Nothing changes my affection for the Club, and certainly not agenda-driven scoddish spin.

  26. Elidor69,

I’m sure most promoted officers would see it as a good thing – the management culture that prevails means their careers would stall if they did not follow the party line.

One centralised force is certainly cheaper than the regional ones. But is that alone a good enough argument? Should we also abolish local authorities, health boards etc., as centralised services would be cheaper?

I do see local accountability of services as important, and policing must respond to the communities it serves. I don’t see how that can happen adequately with the highly centralised structure that now exists.
