Just in from the match / swim! Both great results.. 50k support cheering the bhoy Jamieson. Class.

    Game, early season. Rusty?

Thought generally good. Matthews a standout ..

Sammy had a few of his ” old” woe is me moments BUT overall on the night we won.

Better teams would ve done us but hey, we won the match , we move on..

    Delighted.

    As Neil said- remember Sion.

    Champions league-no Ramsdens here!

Off to Donegal Fri out of Troon . Any CQNers give me and my bhoy a shout.

Gutted to miss Sean Fallon.. The epitome of class and Celtic and his beautiful family..

we managed a 2-1 at home against a awful Finnish team that attract an average crowd of 4k every week.

lenny’s flat back 4-4-2 was pathetic. the imagination was lost once the Finnish coach sussed us out after 10 mins.

anyone who’s played the game/qualified at a decent level could see it wasnt good enough.

Should you not be rummaging through bins trying to find enough Gingies to pay for your Sevco season ticket?

Stop annoying us and get back to mourning your dead club!!!

  5. I can’t understand the logic behind some Celtic fans putting bets on Celtic winning every SPL game this season.

When did we ever get remotely close to winning all our league games in one season excluding games agains the dead huns?

Why would anyone assume that without them, the 11 other SPL teams will be weakened?

Such thinking makes no sense to me.

  6. The bould b`hoys..... Tá ár lá anois..!!! on

Was my second game in the new seat in 406…[what a view] But jeezo, the halfwit that sat beside me was worse than anyone Ive read on CQN. Absolute A–hole. Thankfully he swapped with his pal for the second half who spent more time on his phone and looking elsewhere than watching the game. Hoping they’re not a permanent fixture. Unbelievable.

  7. I thought tonight was disappointing on the whole. I think we can still get through and even get a win in Finland, but to me they are no better than Hearts or Motherwell for example and we have now left next week’s game in the balance. I’m hoping Kris was injured, otherwise I think Neil made a very strange decision in taking him off.

They are the champions of their country, the size of their crowds matters not.

Gone are the days of humping teams from far away lands 5-7 to 0, coaches have caught up, they are doing their jobs.

We didn’t play 442,we played 4411, and we were unlucky not to score early doors.

Now I personally wouldn’t have played the same system that our coaching staff did tonight, but I am not a football coach, and we ended up winning the game, and gave ourselfs a good chance of progressing.

With the players at out disposal, what would you have done ???

  10. Celts as Coorslad pointed out the other day…….. read the CQN IS CHANGING piece is on the CQN front page………read it or see below!

    CQN is changing

We’ve come a long way in the last 8 years. From humble beginnings, we’ve grown into one of the most popular and commented-on sporting blogs in Europe.

Over the summer we’ll be making changes to Celtic Quick News to bring you a better, accessible and social website. There will be some small maintenance windows, but it will all be worth it.

If a maintenance notice appears, or the site appears unresponsive, please check back in 15 minutes.

It was a good result for a first competative game. We have it in us to get better, even by next Wednesday. Even one more competative game will help. I expect Sammi will be getting some criticism. Just remember he put the cross in for Hooper’s goal.

Just reading back….You poor sod ye.

    hehe

  13. Evening all,

God there are some moany sods in the Celtic support!

Remember lads, this was our first competitive game of the season. Yep, we were a little rusty but we won. The Finns were not great but hell they were 18 games into their season. We should have/could have won by more but its better than going to Helsinki 1-0 down.

I’m not going to criticize any of our players, though one or two were not at their brightest. I am sure they will be looking forward to Flag Day to get another game under their belts before the away fixture.

Overall, I’m happy (though my PC would disagree when Helsinki got their goal).

Just In. Hit and miss tonight. Hopefully the last time we’ll see Vic at CH. I thought big Michael looked fine playing there on Saturday. They’re poor and I hope and pray we’ve done enough. Well done Michael Jamieson..HH.

  15. CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever on

we won. first game of the season – so I’m happy.

if we got beat next week – I’d be surprised and disappointed but not gutted.

SPL dominance a must – CL a bonus. Europa cup our level imo.

  16. Just in from the game. Thought Kenny Shiels got it right: we didn’t have the right mind set. I don’t think it was complacency. It was more like we weren’t up to match fitness mentally. I thought Forrest and Matthews were particularly guilty of this, especially in the first half. Still, we have our noses in front and the young lhad Mathieson was a fingertip away from gold. So, a good night overall.

    evening all

Just back from the game, via the pub for a much needed refreshment, anyone know the attendance tonight?

I counted 38 Helsinki fans from the south east corner!

We are screaming out for a proper striker to play next to Hooper, he was too isolated tonight, I thought we had a few decent performers but not enough.

That mob are nothing to be afraid of, we should have finished the tie tonight.

P.S could someone please tell Wanyama he’s not as good as his agent tells him!!

  18. Just back. Traffic awful.

Thought bhoys played well, but lacked a cutting edge in final third. Rustiness? Perhaps.

Dicey for away leg now, I’m afraid. Need big performances from our big players.

Thought Mulgrew, Matthews and Wanyama all excellent tonight.

Sammy good in parts, Commons encouraging too.

  19. just back from the game…wasnt too impressed, hope we can improve pretty quickly.

its only my opinion….but theres something lacking, it seems we need to go behind before we try a leg.

we should have beat them more comfortably imo.

    but what do i know.

    Hail Hail

  20. UC

    Cheers buddy :-)

Some positives and some negatives tonight. We won, firstly, which above everything else is the most important thing.

Thought they were equivalent to a good SPL team and set up the way most SPL teams do at Parkhead with only one man up front.

Had a wee look back there and saw lots of people giving Matthews MOTM. That must have been on the TV because Mulgrew got it at the game.

It was thorough deserved too, I thought he was excellent tonight and to be honest he had to be. If Wilson, Dan, Loovens or anyone else had played as poorly as Vic tonight they would have been slaughtered on here. Lost count of the number of times he went under the ball and from my seat his illogical challenge near the by line was a penalty.

Thought Sammi was superb for an hour and was pleased with the performances of Ledley, Brown and especially Forest.

All to play for Celtic, let’s do it!!!

  21. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

We dilly dally on the ball too often biggest culprits are Sammi, Kris, Emilio, Victor

Last season I would have agreed that the euros were our level.

I believe that we can do damage in the CL, given the chance.

There are so many teams out there who are average, just like we are.

We have a young hungry bunch of players who imo will do well at CL level, we have no chance against the top teams, nobody has, I think we are good enough to give a decent acount of ourselfs in the group stages.

    Given proper referees obviously….

  23. Just in from game and not read the blog.

2-1 not a fair reflection for me. They got a massive break for their goal then within a minute we hit post then the back of the keeper’s head but not in. On another night we could score more.

    We will in Helsinki.

We will improve in fitness and technique by next Wednesday, they won’t.

With a bit of luck we will see off the Finns.

Thank you CRC for the badges, nice meeting you.

Busy Gazebo tonight; roll on Aberdour, then flag day Saturday.

Confident we will go through to next round and then continue to improve as our season begins.

  24. A win in Europe is always a good thing and at 0-1 I would have took it in a shot.

I thought we never really lost control of the match and played well enough.

I’m on the LONG drive home but look forward posting about tactics again.

But will leave that until tomorrow .

Keep faith there’s only about another 16 games until we lift the big cup AGAIN :-)

  25. ht

I think the MOTM award is the preserve of the hospitality punters at CP home games, so it is often unrepresentative.

The hospitality punters, speaking as one whose been there 3 times tops, are usually more middle class and more, ahem, refreshed than others in the crowd. This can lead to errors in MOTM nominations.

But Charlie had a good game and was probably 2nd to Adam in my estimation.

  26. Just in, from the game and ole Eurochamps67’s ears are nipping.

We have better players than Helsinki we are massive by comparison, in terms of every conceivable football way, I physically counted they had 42 travelling supporters in the Lisbon Lions stand.

They are another minnow, but a technically good side, the tie is totally in the balance anything could happen in the return leg, these games come too early for Celtic and I hope we play better.

We operate on a Euro wing and a prayer, and considering our resource we disappoint, where the goal is surely CL qualification at all costs.

    Dissappointed CSC

anybody else think lennon is missing his pal alan thompson he just doesnt look at ease without his right hand man! we all know lawell sacked him not our main man! think we have enough in the tank to get the job done next week ! hail hail

  28. THE EXILED TIM on 1 August, 2012 at 22:41

Forget the size of their crowds.

We have 20 times the amount at our disposal than we have.

Playing a flat back 4-4-2 at this level just wont do.

Any European coach will see that …..and he did. after 10 mins he had us sussed.

wanyama and sammy where all over the place. the fwds change of movement in attack beggared belief it was so awful.

as for matthews, Jesus wept he had control of that flank. who told him to hold back?

izzy? My God, maybe his awful positioning accounted for wanyama looking utterly confused at cb – although why Lenny put wanyama there in the first place sums up his tactical knowhow.

    lenny’s tactics were pathetic.

  29. When we played Helsinki under the MON era the crowd at Parkhead was 40,000.

Tonight could have been close to 53,000 well done the Celtic family, we don’t need no huns.

Also well done Michael Jamieson, what an achievement!!!!

  30. nsu

“we all know lawell sacked him not our main man!”

    I don’t know that.

Plus I thought Johann was the right hand man and AT was just the trainer- the Walford equivalent.

i thought Neil looked fine and he spoke as if he had enjoyed the game in the post match interview

  31. Eyes Wide Open on

We are still in it – not as comfortable as we would all like mind.

One of our big problems is our approach play.

When we are attacking it is so blatantly obvious how we are going to work the ball the opposition are almost quite comfortable at times in defending against us, knowing we will be trying to work the ball for a cross.

We dont know how to move the ball into the box (I dont mean crossing) and we dont seem to know to attack through the middle (too many statues).

We need that variation to open up play and become more dynamic. (Commons has the intelligence to do this on his own if given the freedom, and McCourt has the flamboyance to)

If we could just do this, we would carve teams open early doors and start putting games to bed earlier, using up less energy on the pitch and saving dodgy tickers in the stands off it.

We badly need a tactical coach within the backroom staff imo.

The curious choice and timing of the substitutions only adds to that belief.
