  1. Make no mistake, Lazio are a right good side, lightning fast in their passing and movement. But we held our own with them. And had a trick up our sleeve too.

Watching Celtic in Europe can be a frustrating business, but you keep the faith because you know that once in a while there’s going to be a special, special night.

Thanks for your post at 11.39. Superb memories recalled. Vojvodina missed a sitter that night at 1-0. Had they scored, we would have needed another 2. Similar to last night.

And it’s the same warm glow I have this morning that I had as a nearly 10 yr old that Thursday in March 1967.

When you read the history, it’s enough to make your heart go oh oh oh oh…

  3. Amazing night of high octane football.A very good Lazio team, playing probably their best of the season, showed the quality we expect from an Italian team. With relatively, poor performances from,Jamesy,Elyanoussi,we did not fire on all cylinders for most of the match, but sheer effort GOT us through.Again,we can see the quality Jullien has when a ball is delivered into the right area.We should be doing this much more often.

A win on Saturday will be a perfect week.

RIGHT just done in 3 paper hankies after reading MATT STEWART’S piece from last night.wife ill be down shortly and i will get third degree .might just do her a favour and mention STEVIE CHALMERS scoring in LISBON and me proposing.then i will sign off with “MANY BHOYS DO YOU THINK ASKED THEIR BURDS TO GET MARRIED LAST NIGHT ”

    FIRZA FORZA.

  5. Once again the “we know best” Green Brigade let themselves and the club down with their banners and constantly singing F#%k Lazio.

If we are fined for this it should be the last straw for these clowns. Plenty on the waiting list who would fill these seats. No more away tickets either.

  6. Another Willie Collum blunder that changed the result of a match last night. How much longer will UEFA use Scottish referees?

    Your summary is spot on.

Sheer effort and determination, ( Old fashioned Scottish football) got us the result.

The Italians are slick on the ball and are technically superior if you stand off them. They don’t like it when we get right about them.

What is so exciting about this team is that there is so much more to come.

Our challenge going forward is to retain that effort and determination for every game regardless who is playing.

    HH.

PS : The light show is magic and European nights project Celtic as a massive club to a wide audience. It is the best signing policy we have and wow we are using it.

  9. No trophies handed out in October and all that but with 5 starters last night from the transfer window and Lenny doing everything right it looks like we’ve done a good job with recruitment in the Summer

Four out of the back five are new and we’ve conceded 2 goals in 3 games in the group

  10. What a great read back!

Thanks for the updates and links to the goals and THAT save!

I must admit, and I posted on here when Lenny got the job, I didn’t think it would work.

    So am no perfect!

I get the feeling that we are not being fairly treated by European referees.

Is the unseen masonic hand at work here too?

I’m not a Celtic supporter because I’m a glory hunter, nor because I expect my team to win, nor because I think we deserve it.

I’m a Celtic supporter because I expect my team not to give up, not to stop, simply to try until they are done.

Proud tonight of my team, my club.

    Well done Celtic, well done.

Go to the fn ballet or something.

The pyro I agree on, the GB should leave it out, but a few banners and a chant about the opposition – I mean are we all to become little snowflakes now?

So what if its a little edgy, not half as edgy as it used to be. And better than sitting in silence.

Thought the exact same about Forsters save at the end.

Incredible effort to be fair to the Lazio player, the force and placement of the shot couldn’t have been better.

For Forster to not only get a hand to it but to parry it away to safety was outrageous, most of those shots, if the keeper gets anywhere near it, are parried into the net or if they’re lucky onto the woodwork.

The save is not getting the recognition it deserves(outside of Celtic fans obv)

Pyro’s, banners are just different sides of the same coin for these guys, they don’t care about the “rules” which are enforced to the letter in Europe where the smallest thing is picked up on.

Most people I know are sick of the constant transgressions of these clowns. 150 out of 1600 in the standing section. No loss.

  15. A wee message to those responsible for the disco lights before kick off….

You’ll Never Walk Alone on European nights is very special.

Everyone is in early ,everyone sings and all the scarves are held high.

The view ,from the South Stand looking across to the backdrop of Green and White is spectacular.

Unfortunately the impact is now negated by the dimming of lights casting the support in murky shadow.

    End of moan…… : )

    What a night.

Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

    =======

Pyro can cause physical hurt, a banner…not so much. If you’re are worried about a message telling fans of a club, who hours before were marching through Glasgow making fascist salutes and singing fascist songs, where to go, maybe you should watch games in the house or at the pub.

They were even accomodating enough to put it in their own language for them.

  18. The morning after-

Italian media – typical of this season’s Lazio.-play well /play badly /give the ball away / profligate / switch off at the back. The Immobile miss -him in a nutshell…

Inzaghi- dissonant – typical of the season so far/ played well /played badly..Profligate /wasteful.Poor defending at both goals .Bastos nowhere for the winner .Bad miss by Immobile.Much improvement needed..Much work to do.

Saw the film of the Casa Pound crew singing -Bravi Ragazzi Di Budapest..Big neo fascist choon -anti left .Rightist provocation -usually gets the desired response in Italy -violence /chaos / social disruption.

  19. Delighted with the result last night.

Great 3 points, and puts us in a really strong position to qualify out this group.

However, there is a “but”. I think if we are being honest, the 2nd half in particular. It was better to be lucky than good.

I think anyone that is willing to take an honest reflection of our performance in last night’s 2nd half, we looked far too open at times, and huge big spaces opened on the pitch, that Lazio almost nearly capitalised upon.

Brown, McGregor, Forrest are obviously significant players to our team. However all 3 looked off it to me.

Make no mistake, that despite an incredible win against a good Lazio, I truly believe now is the time for some squad rotation, otherwise, our good work will soon get un-done. Starting at Aberdeen on Sunday, maybe it is time for re-introduction of Ntcham, Bitton, and Mikey Johnson.

    Just a thought.

  20. Ok so it wasn’t silky composed free flowing football. It was grit and determination to keep going , how many times have we been undone whilst chasing a winner ?

To many for my liking , so I will take luck over good for once ,Lazio done what all Italian teams do ,frustrate ,niggle complain , break away and score . The ref never gave us much and at one point the linesman was shown, and he looked as sweaty and manic as I was .

We persevered ,we got the points .

    Up the hoops

“I get the feeling that we are not being fairly treated by European referees.

Is the unseen masonic hand at work here too?”

The ref WAS really poor last night, inconsistent, heavy on us, light on them, allowed the No.20 to dive about the penalty area, telling him three times to get up but never booking him, the nonsense about stopping the game TWICE to tell their player to pull his socks up, the shocking tackle on Calmac earning a yellow and the same for Big Julien for running in to Calmac’s aid. After first 15 minutes I turned to my mouth-foaming mate who was spouting exactly your view and said “More we are a Scottish team and they are Italian. Simple as that.” Then a poster last night (sorry, forget who) stated that this guy has refereed EIGHT Seria A teams in Europe and only ONE has expeirenced defeat. Mmmmmm.

    Turkeybhoy

Relatively poor performance from Jamsey? The Marsupial will love that, but honestly, at the game you should have seen the amount of work he did, at both ends of the field. Unspectacular absolutely, but an outstanding contribution to the team and the result.

Christie will be a miss on Sunday.

I thought Forster and Jullien were our best 2 players last night.

    Closely followed by Christie.

Truth be told, I thought Forrest, Elyounoussi, Brown, McGregor and Edouard all had relatively poor games

  23. My friends in Celtic

    Great read back.

Doc,s post sums it up for me what supporting Celtic is all about.

Conversation at work after the game. I reckon Forster’s save was up there with the much lauded save from Gordon Banks. ( yes it was that good )

As for upsetting a horrible fascist support who paraded their credentials through Glasgow. Really ?

We should not apologise for stating what we think of them.

Anyway, nothing can upset me today, walking on air.

  25. RUGGYMAN

Jock Stein said you can only play as well as the opposition let you.

I suspect Lazio are a good step up on the quality of footballers we have played this season, hence the performances of some of our players being not so good.

Just as long as they learned from last night it should improve their game.

    Onwards and upwards!

  26. Matt Stewart, You are a gifted writer your piece last night was superb absolutely superb, now I better dry my tears before Mrs. Corkcelt walks in and sees me.

They think I’m childish in this house just coz I weep when Celtic win & sometimes when they lose, when I read emotional posts and when I look to get my tea in my Celtic Mug.

When are you ever going to grow up is a frequent question, well next year when I’m 72 Luv ,maybe.

Another Willie Collum blunder that changed the result of a match last night. How much longer will UEFA use Scottish referees?

Once the competition entries knock-out stage then UEFA will not use them. No VAR in Scotland means no refs without VAR participating. That’s why VAR will be introduced here, for their benefit !!

  28. Ruggyman, Strange how 2 men can watch the same game & see 2 different things, I thought Brooney was brilliant. Made one bad mistake early second half but did a huge amount of work apart from that

Emerald, You touched on a brilliant point many of us including myself only see the game on TV and are giving our opinions based on what we see. However there is a huge amount going on off the ball, running, positioning etc that we never see.

  29. The Battered Bunnet on

I thought Lazio’s was the best demonstration of great defending I’ve seen at Celtic Park since the 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich back in the MON days.

That is, up until the 89th minute…

Overall, two evenly matched sides went at it hammer and tongs for 96 minutes, and Celtic narrowly came out on top. That’s two reasons to applaud Lenny: His side is a match for the likes of Lazio; and his side found the wherewithal to beat them.

    Bunnet doffed.

  30. Siempre Celtic (formerly Traditionalist88) on

On several occasions last night we attempted to thread the ball through them in tight positions and found it was cut out. A mix of good anticipation by them and poor execution/decision making by us.

On another occasion Elyanoussi got the ball through but put too much weight on it.

But a few minor tweaks here and there and we can command home games against very good sides.

Love the encouragement players have to shoot on sight. If it doesnt go in it can still create confusion and moves break down far too often when you’re trying to walk the ball in, especially against organised defences.
