Celtic’s Fedur ready for Champions League challenge

750

If ever you needed a reason to convince you to ignore the vast majority of transfer speculation which inflicts football fans from May until 30 August, the signing of Miku Fedor is a gift.  Spanish football is suffering from the kind of economic wake-up call which makes it possible for aspirational Scottish clubs (I know there’s only one) to sign strikers first choice strikers.  Miku came through the scouting process last season and remained on the list but the deal had to be right.

25 goals in 85 games for a struggling team in the top league in the world (Exhibit A: Atletico) suggests we might have someone who will flourish on an acre of Glasgow and will bring experience and confidence onto the field when he faced Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.  The deal has the hallmarks of Peter Lawwell’s try-before-you-buy policy.  Get them in on a loan with an option to buy.  If they are successful, do the deal, if not, you’re not stuck with Ulrik Laursen breezing into training asking the other players how they got on at the weekend.

Right now the most important question is, what shape of team does Neil Lennon have in mind?  Miku plays through the middle and on the right.  He’s fast and he’s 6’1”.  Have we bought a someone to play on the right of a front three?  Perhaps, but with circa 15 first-choice midfield players to accommodate the plan is surely more complex.

More on this when we have a quieter moment, I’m off to bed to forget all apache command line prompts until January.  We’ll talk goalkeepers over the weekend.

  1. : UEFA PRESIDENT Michel Platini said yesterday that depending on how an experiment with the women’s senior game in Belgium and the Netherlands

turns out, the organisation could change its stance on cross-Border leagues over the coming seasons.

“We have to decide whether to allow two leagues to play together,” he said at a press conference in Monaco yesterday. “At the moment we don’t allow it but in the future it’s possible that we will. “There are many things to be considered; it has an effect on

European competitions and it’s really complicated but there are crises in many countries and so there are leagues that fear for their existence and so it is something that we need to consider.”

‘Quite brilliant analogy by Stuart Dougal on the oldco/newco situation.

Simply, as he told his Rangers supporting friend Ann Crystal- it is like when you got married, you changed your name but you are still the same person.’

The encouraging thing about the article is that it is the first time (to my knowledge) that UEFA have publicly acknowledged that there is a problem and have shown that they are open to addressing it.

I’m not so sure of the merits of a so-called Celtic league as per the rugby. It is only viable in rugby due to the merging of smaller club teams in Ireland and Wales to create clubs with a fan base large enough to make it viable. I’m not sure there is any appetite for such mergers in any of the Celtic countries.

    The North Atlantic League however….

  4. Cue sad music. See,down here where I’m living I’m like a one man CSC.

There used to be a proper CSC….then it closed….and everyone disappeared like snow in spring.

A ‘newco’ CSC emerged but it was crap….and not really like a CSC at all.

    And so here I am.

That should tell any lurkin’ hun something.

If it’s not the real deal then it’s crap, and you’ll soon find yourself on yer own. Hahahahaha!

Intrigued to see who our out of contract signing will be, I’m told he is NOT someone “we’ll be familiar with”

Rules out McFadden and I don’t know how reliable how this is but it also seems Lenny has ruled out McFadden.

  6. Jinkyredstar,

Nice to see you again too. It was uncanny how you just appeared after we’d mentioned you :)

Hope you enjoyed the prawns :)

  7. I see Navel signed for Ajax last night so the free agent won’t be him.

So it could be McFadden, Heskey, Owen and Klasnic.

Or someone completely from leftfield like Florent Sinama Pongolle.

But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

That’s interesting and significant news. Someone on CQN recently suggested a cross-border league of Scottish and Scandinavian teams. I think that, or even better a Scottish-Dutch-Belgian league, would be a good solution – assuming we can’t get into the EPL.

Celtictv now make us wait hours before the game gets uploaded if we miss kickoff time where before us expats could rewind the stream any time from kickoff so I have to wait for tomorrow to see the match :(

    Re cross border leagues

The Portuguese have a similar problem, small country not really big enough to support a full first class league. Their nearest neighbours don’t really need them though – unless of course the Financial fair play thing really takes effect and whittles down the number of viable teams in Spain.

Listen fellas,i was having a wee nosey on Oddschecker there – couldn’t believe this for value from William Hill – They have young Tony Watt priced up @ 25/1 to be this season’s top scorer in the SPL.

I think that is a massive price,he is as low as 12/1 everywhere else!!

Alright for a wee interest i reckon, took him each way.

  14. This piece from Barcelona website is causing apoplectic frothing at the gills on Sevcomedia and FF:

“Celtic: the new king of Scotland

Although they have 11 fewer league titles than their eternal rivals Rangers, these are happy days for the green and white half of Scotland’s biggest city. For economic reasons, their protestant rivals have been forced to disband and are now starting all over again in the Scottish Third Division. With Rangers out of the way for at least the next three years, Celtic look set to dominate the domestic championship like never before, which means manager Neil Lennon will be able to focus almost his entire attention on his club’s European campaign. Applying their typically physical but direct approach, their strengths include Wanyama in midfield and Greek international Samaras up front.”

“Facts don’t lie [no, you do],we’re not a new football club no matter how many times they say it,we still have our trophies and history intact.

We’re buying shares from the company that run the football club.”

    Most insightful of all:

” just like septic their a bunch of taigs, spanish taigs”

  15. Auld Neil Lennon heid on

    Cultsbhoy

TBB gave an excellent analysis of the factors governing Celtic’s spend/ signing policy two blogs back.

The key factor is not keeping in front of Rangers but the avoidance of the risk of not being guaranteed CL money for the length of the kind of expensive contract that a proven player will cost usually three years, compounded by no resale value if at rear end of their career.

Hence one year loan deals with options to buy. The CB contract was clearly needed to address the one area where there has not been a first name on the team sheet player for years.

In terms of them I would like to see Celtic forcing through changes at the SFA for without a supportive unchanged SFA they cannot mount a challenge unless they become a proper football club who develops their own rather than undermine the opposition.

  16. Sitting on bus heading to game. Guy in front has CL fixtures and badges for our group printed on back of home shirt. Looks brilliant and the Hun trying not to look like he is a Hun behind him pure beeling. lol!

  17. Sixteen roads to Golgotha

He has a chance of a top 3 finish, all depends on how much game time he gets.

What about Miku, I fancy him to be top scorer, can’t see odds yet.

    Good luck.

Going with Shef Utd as my bet of the day.

what was the general view on transfer window last night,

did we get what we were after or is PL still a bad man

  20. gordybhoy

Strong CH and CF who scored 12 goals in LaLiga for a struggling team. Then there is our headline stealer this weekend. Good deadline day in my opinion.

  21. gordybhoy64

We signed a no7 Miku a Venezulan striker from Getafe, looks promising, a back up goalie from Nantes and big Efe Ambrose, I’m pleased with the window but there are those among us who are not!!

PL will always be a bad guy as having a bad guy makes a lot of folks happy about something or other.

Celtic a team on the rise…

I was wondering what you fancied, I was thinking about Lisbon, but as you are going to Barca, I will suss out flights as well.

I can get there from Granada, a bit more than your flights, Vueling is reasonable, about 50 each way I think.

Tickets won’t be a problem it will not be anywhere near a sell out.

  23. Gene's a Bhoys name on

I think I would rather have Heskey than Owen – He isn’t a prolific scorer but can be a great out ball in away games – can hold the ball and bring others into play – with Owen he would spend more time at Hamilton or Ayr races.

Off to see Port Vale this afternoon – sons have a box there – nothing great but what do you expect in the 4th tier of a league – wait a minute!

  24. Gonna have to dig my sombrero out…. flights booked to Barcelona, night in Madrid on the way there. Looking forward to it already.
