As recently as December, Sky Sports contributor and very, very, lapsed Celtic fan, Neil McCann, accused John Guidetti of cheating while simultaneously acknowledging that the player didn’t claim for the penalty McCann thought he didn’t deserve. The mental contortions required to allow McCann to accuse a Celtic player of cheating, while not cheating, was worthy of awe.
Yesterday the same open sore was evident. Craig Gordon fouled Jackson Irvine 23 yards off his line, to the side of the field. Virgil van Dijk was back inside the six yard line with other Celtic players storming back.
McCann waxed lyrical that the Celtic goalkeeper should have been ordered off, claiming “The new rules are simple. Is the Ross County player being denied a goal scoring opportunity?”
He’s half right, the Rules of the Game are clear, they note three sending off offenses for fouls:
Serious foul play
Violent conduct
Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity
Referee guidance on the third offense is crystal clear; denying a possible goal scoring opportunity is not a sending off offense. Referees are only allowed to show the red card when an obvious opportunity has been denied.
Jackson Irvine could get an early shot off with his left foot (he’s right footed) but it would need to be a spectacular effort from a tight angle. The potential chance was never an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The yellow card decision was correct. These are the Rules of the Game and the guidance referees are given.
The only thing you need to know about yesterday is that if you have a career in the football media, and before you cite the Rules of the Game, you’d better read them. Otherwise you might appear to be a bitter clown who falsifies the rules to suit an agenda.

Kevin moran played successfully for Dublin before switching to soccer with man United
Saint Stivs
Aye, both MON and Lenny played for their counties at Minor level (under 18)
Pretty sure Packie did too for Donegal
Been reflecting!! I really thought there was little finer than a Celtic win. Now I know better. Hurtin’ huns, just love them suffering at our continued success, don’t you love it!! Waaah
KINGLuBO
Saint stivis
Seamus Coleman was meant to be pretty good.
Nearly sure Kevin Moran played at high level in the Gaelic before going to England and playin pro football.
i dont want to tell old stories about mccann, but here is how i think his mind works now,
having been disowned by old pals, family members and actually despised by many many of the tribe he joined, he is stuck in a bad place. i dont believe he is a hurtin hun, he wasnt in their traditions, and must allways feel uncomfortable when in amongst the klan, how else could you feel.
no for me, having sold his soul, he became an ultra celtic hater, he hates that he never got to play for us, and in his shruken heart he must regret ever singing for them.
he knows he did wrong, and lets it manifest in hating a “succesful, unbroken, uncheating” celtic.
I am reminded of an alleged incident during McCann’s tenure with the dead club. Didn’t he ‘allegedly’ join in singing the ‘billy boys’ during a night out with other squad members of the liquidated football club. If true it highlights the true character of the man. Willing to sell his family and tradition for a bowl of soup. Or an EBT being the modern equivalent in this instance. He is worse than Rat Nevin.
Niall Quinn was a very good hurler apparently and Packie played Gaelic football before he signed for Celtic. Most Irish soccer players probably played a fair bit of Gaelic football at school and under age level before they specialised in the soccer.
Oglach,
You’re right about McCann and singing from the sectarian hymn sheet. He was partnering that other well known bigot, Findlay, who is now Chairman of Cowdenbeath, I think. Findlay was reproved by his fellow lawyers, while McCann goes on to carve a career in broadcasting. Only in Scotland……

Many thanks for your kind thoughts.

I like it when they hurt.
It pleases me.
I smirk at the effort involved in contorting to suit an agenda.
Brogue wearing soup takers are a particular favourite of mine.
Also, Scepovic is never (EVER, EVER) a Celtic player.
That is all…
Biblically dreich in Corcaigh………………
Morning all….
.
Looking for advice on buying Barca tickets. Looked on the web and the seem to be very expensive.
.
Does anyone know whether buying locally or at the stadium is any cheaper?
.
Also….
.
Any advice on visiting the stadium in Estoril? Would love to visit the scene of our finest moment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ronnie

It would have been an even more entertaining train to Clydebank last night, had TriColouredRibbon been there. ;)

Hope your father’s health improves quickly. I will add him to my prayers.
Hail Hail
McCann – more to be pitied………….
File under Johnston. M.

…………………………………………………………………………………
I went to see Barca last year and I bought my tickets from their official website. Very efficient and same price as I would have paid out there.
why do they have to change a chat forum that worked
Even though Fermanagh are playing in green and white, it’s a
COYBIB
From me:-)
Can’t stand McCann….he is a 24 carat Fanny with serious mental health issues on anything Celtic.
But…………..
To suggest he wasn’t a good enough footballer to play for Celtic when he joined the Huns is just wrong.
Deadclub paid him more with their cheating EBT but I guess that was the measure of the man anyway.
He would have been in Celtic starting 11 at that time.
McCann’s soup taking bitter OB of the highest order and he still owes the first clubs creditors £500,000. Those of you who still have sky are paying this wee hun’s wages. Please desist immediately! HH.
First score to Dublin, one point to nil
I thought when watching yesterday that the rules said denying a “clear” goal scoring opportunity and was surprised no one raised that.( With hindsight Tanner was never going to and Charlie would not expect the rule book argument.)
“Obvious” is clearer than clear and would not have needed argument to support it. If it needs argument to support it then its not clear or obvious.
There is a danger in looking at the rules or anything the other side related, of finding what you want to find in order to support a preconcieved view of the other side.
As a cheater himself on ebts, McCann will be desperate to tar the other side with the same brush.
It’s whataboutery in a personal form and the defense against having to process an unpleasant truth about self.
0-3 to 0-1 in Dublin’s favour. Ten minutes gone
Goal Dublin. 1-4 to 0-1
sky was cancelled last month and they were told why i no longer wanted it.
a, their pathetic treatment of scottish football in general
b, their insistance on employing sectarian bigots with their anti celtic agenda.
today i received a courtesy call offering a discounted rate if i wished to start again. they were given the above reasons yet again. the girl/lady who called was very polite but also said i wasnt the only one who cited these sort of reasons
McCann, Tanner and Whyte, seem to get more coverage from our support than from anywhere and anyone else.
I really don’t know why we give them the ‘oxygen’.
They present no threat to Celtic.
1-6 to 0-3 now
Paul67 ….. You forgot to confirm that obviously an erse and possibly a wee shoite ….!!!! :-)
McCann is ….. even
THOMPSONTWIN on 2ND AUGUST 2015 4:17 PM
Very good point….!!!!
Fermanagh doing well to contain Dublin but trail 1-9 to 0-5 with six minutes left of first half
A couple of great points from Dublin. 1-12 to 0-5. Fermanagh running out of ideas now
I’m finding it easier this afternoon to navigate the new site …..is it a ‘work in progress’ ?
Half time: 1-13 to 0-6
Aberdeen and Dundee Utd still drawing…. 35 minutes to go
Watching DU v Aberdeen. Quite a good game but thon MacGowan nearly finished Flood’s career. Taking up where he left off last season. Thug.
I hate to see a grown man cry. But I had a chuckle at Mc Cann!!!
SCULLYBHOY on 2ND AUGUST 2015 3:55 PM…
