Clowns falsifying the Rules

423

As recently as December, Sky Sports contributor and very, very, lapsed Celtic fan, Neil McCann, accused John Guidetti of cheating while simultaneously acknowledging that the player didn’t claim for the penalty McCann thought he didn’t deserve. The mental contortions required to allow McCann to accuse a Celtic player of cheating, while not cheating, was worthy of awe.

Yesterday the same open sore was evident. Craig Gordon fouled Jackson Irvine 23 yards off his line, to the side of the field. Virgil van Dijk was back inside the six yard line with other Celtic players storming back.

McCann waxed lyrical that the Celtic goalkeeper should have been ordered off, claiming “The new rules are simple. Is the Ross County player being denied a goal scoring opportunity?”

He’s half right, the Rules of the Game are clear, they note three sending off offenses for fouls:

Serious foul play
Violent conduct
Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity

Referee guidance on the third offense is crystal clear; denying a possible goal scoring opportunity is not a sending off offense. Referees are only allowed to show the red card when an obvious opportunity has been denied.

Jackson Irvine could get an early shot off with his left foot (he’s right footed) but it would need to be a spectacular effort from a tight angle. The potential chance was never an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The yellow card decision was correct. These are the Rules of the Game and the guidance referees are given.

The only thing you need to know about yesterday is that if you have a career in the football media, and before you cite the Rules of the Game, you’d better read them. Otherwise you might appear to be a bitter clown who falsifies the rules to suit an agenda.

  1. Bhoys, off the Albuferia, Portugal in the morning. Anyone know where i could watch the game on Wednesday? Cheers HH

  2. Warching the new firm derby …

Just contain my dislike for Shane Logan…… Tosser

  3. Re Gaelic footballers who went on to do well in football. There is a great video of Kevin Moran playing for the Dubs bandaged up like a mummy (Egyptian variety) and playing a stormer in an All Ireland final.

Have a friend (not an imaginary one) who said that Shane Long was one of the finest Minor hurlers that he had ever seen.

  4. Don’t care about McCann or Sevco Sports. I have BT Sports through Virgin and Celtic TV.

    .

The fact is simple enough. If there was a ref in Scotland who would have been dying to red card any Celtic player yesterday, Collum is that ref.

    .

Weetim, up till last year I would have been fully in your camp, but I thought there were signs last year/season that Gollum was changing. Here’s my take on it – I think Gollum is basically a poor ref and he was certainly got at early on with the media highlighting his job as an RE teacher in a RC school, especially before he embarrassed himself in his first Celtic v (old) Rangers game. For the next few years he was blatantly anti-Celtic at every opportunity, but ……………………. an here’s the rub, it didn’t help him any, did it?

    .

So, I think (no evidence, only opinion) that he might just have said to himself “Ah feck it, I think I’ll just referee it as I see it”. He is STILL a poor referee, prone to making major mistakes at time of pressure, but I think you are right that the OLD Gollum would have had the red card out before big Craigie had got off the turf. Yesterday the NEW Gollum got it right and if it fecked up McCann’s day so much the better.

As a wee aside – I was walking through EK town centre an hour or so ago and I spotted a chap wearing a blue shirt alleging that some team or other had been around since 1872. He spotted me looking at it then our eyes met and I just gave him a wee smile and shook my head. He was beelin’ so he was. Titter titter.

  10. Game petering out now. Fermanagh offering little in second half and Dublin operating in second gear. 1-19 to 0-10 with 15 minutes remaining.

Dont get the we played 2 short then name Forrest who was ok and sc epovic who got no service, johannsen goal apart was shite, the only player to look good up front after Griffiths went off was commons when he came on,the whole midfield is sadly lacking when Bitton isnt playing.

  12. Really bizarre ‘goal’ scored by Fermanagh. Will be talked about for years. 1-22 to 1-12 and six minutes left

  13. Saw the Aberdeen goal against United….total fluke, yet radio Scotland describing it as stunning and brilliant. Good support for the sheep though.

  14. CQN Corner Stats 2015/2016

    Games: 4

    Corners Conceded: 12

    Goals Conceded: 0

    Corners Awarded: 33

    Goals Scored: 3

  15. Just read the article there. It’s time we did something about the blatant bias from the likes of McCann. Hard to believe he’s a Port punter who used to support Celtic.

  16. Another silly goal conceded by Dublin.2-23 to 2-14 with a minute to go. Score flatters Fermanagh

  17. It’s time we did something about the blatant comments from the likes of McCann. Hard to believe he’s a Port punter who used to support Celtic.

  18. Parkheadcumsalford. You are talking utter rubbish. About McGowan of Dundee Utd.I was hoping Celtic would have signed him.you just don’t like.

  19. Quick comment re McCann, although I prefer to ignore him. Yesterday just before half time I was in the queue for my Bovril when the very same McCann was rushing through to get to pitch side I think for the half time analysis?

He is a tiny wee man and was accompanied by another squat wee fellow who looked familiar but I have no idea who he was. MCCann kept his head down and kept moving, a minute later the bold Tanner appeared , heading the same way. To be honest he was courteous in asking people to move aside and although larger than McCann he still looked like a boy that was asked to carry the big boys bags at school.

Point is , I was tempted to ask both of them their opinion about the Gordon incident but knew straight away they had already made their mind up and I did not like to acknowledge that they had in public profile. They are insignificant to my life, to football and to the world at large.

The best policy is to ignore and refuse to bankroll the half wits who employ people like them. I am sure whoever appointed them knew fine well that their own position was safe.

  20. FT: 2-23 to 2-15. Another easy win for Dublin but most supporters will be worried that they haven’t really been tested yet in this year’s championship

  21. Slightly disappointing about yesterday’s performance…..James Forrest is presented with an opportunity. An opportunity to start a game and stake a claim…..yet was rubbish

Also, Johansen filled in for Bitton in beside Brown, again an opportunity for Armstrong to play in his favoured central role…. Again, was in effective.

  22. Good evening TimLand. I got an interesting (FOOTBALL RELATED) Conspiracy Theory to throw at you all on this fine Sunday afternoon. This Theory I speak of Regards our former foe’s from the Asbestos Dome & our friends (ON THIS OCCASION) from UEFA.

Today, while browsing UEFA Co-Efficient’s, & having a laugh at the Rankers standing of 258, I realized that I could not access the Rankers information screen where I expected to find all their latest results, their History (European & Domestic) & any other offerings UEFA had to offer regarding their member clubs.

This revelation has left me confused, as surely UEFA could not possibly forget the history of one of their greatest (Snigger) member clubs. Considering I could get access to the information screen of all other Clubs (that I tried to get access to) on the list including teams like Europa FC, SP Tre Fiori, Aberystwyth Town & Drogeda UTD, I found it quite odd that there was nothing about this Giant of Bigoted Govan.

  23. Timbhoy3,

You may have wanted to sign him for Celtic; I most certainly wouldn’t. He was thuggish against us last season. Our right backs are far far better than him.

RE that team you speak of……how do I break this to you gently……………you better sit down, brace yourself and perhaps pour yourself a stiff drink……….

  25. A lot of Irish rugby internationals have a big GAA background like Shane Horgan (ex Meath minors), Tommy Bowe (Monaghan) and Tomas O’Leary (Tipp hurler).

A lot of the skills are transferable for the backs – lines of running, catching in the air, kicking (obviously) and the ability to take a cheap shot without complaining.

I did the same as you last season but then noticed only history of top league club given. hibs and hearts also had no history. I was then very disappointed to see Derry City listed as history continuous.
