Clowns falsifying the Rules

423

As recently as December, Sky Sports contributor and very, very, lapsed Celtic fan, Neil McCann, accused John Guidetti of cheating while simultaneously acknowledging that the player didn’t claim for the penalty McCann thought he didn’t deserve. The mental contortions required to allow McCann to accuse a Celtic player of cheating, while not cheating, was worthy of awe.

Yesterday the same open sore was evident. Craig Gordon fouled Jackson Irvine 23 yards off his line, to the side of the field. Virgil van Dijk was back inside the six yard line with other Celtic players storming back.

McCann waxed lyrical that the Celtic goalkeeper should have been ordered off, claiming “The new rules are simple. Is the Ross County player being denied a goal scoring opportunity?”

He’s half right, the Rules of the Game are clear, they note three sending off offenses for fouls:

Serious foul play
Violent conduct
Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity

Referee guidance on the third offense is crystal clear; denying a possible goal scoring opportunity is not a sending off offense. Referees are only allowed to show the red card when an obvious opportunity has been denied.

Jackson Irvine could get an early shot off with his left foot (he’s right footed) but it would need to be a spectacular effort from a tight angle. The potential chance was never an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The yellow card decision was correct. These are the Rules of the Game and the guidance referees are given.

The only thing you need to know about yesterday is that if you have a career in the football media, and before you cite the Rules of the Game, you’d better read them. Otherwise you might appear to be a bitter clown who falsifies the rules to suit an agenda.

In the villages around Ireland, there was no alternative for young boys, other than to play GAA games.

Hence why our football is the poor relation today.

You give them great credentials, to be honest I always feel a bit old for them, sort of guilty pleasure? Loved their set at T in the Park and do enjoy the back catalogue.. The Pete Doherty song, “This is for Lovers “is a very good bit of work, that could have been written by Ray Davies.

I watched a few games in a sports bar in the San Jao area. If you are heading downhill past the crossroads, iturn left on the street with the Chineese restaurant. It is near the Spa hotel (used to be the Dom Pancho)

There is also a bar called Jinkys at the cross road.

if you are in the old town, you would have about a 1km walk

    Hope your team wins!

The only two downers for me yesterday were James Forrest’s ineptitude and Dedryck’s passing continuously to Ross County players. Otherwise I had a great day out with dozens of good Tims who post here. Thank you all. Sipsini is funny oot his napper. ;)

The Estadio Nacional is just a 10-minute cheap taxi ride from the centre of Lisbon.

I went there 3 years ago. Nearly ruptured myself climbing over fences to get in – then realised there is a bloody huge big open gate round the corner from the main driveway…

It was wonderful to stand on the turf. Just wonderful.

PS: We got a few unfriendly looks from taxi drivers and the like when we said we were intent on visiting the Estadio Nacional – until we told them why we were going.

Apparently it had very strong links with Portugal’s right-wing dictator Salazar, but once people realised we were making a Celtic 1967 pilgrimage all was well. We are still very well regarded in Lisbon, even now!

My mate had the same treatment, once in the ground all was good. First player the old security guy mentioned ? The small guy with red hair….

Salazar was an ally of Britain for years, although I understand we ( UK government) flattered him and played to his ego for years to get what we needed in regards to Gibraltar and Atlantic access.

In conversation he was told that initially the mad Scots were treated with suspicions until we were spotted attending mass in great numbers.

I hope to get there myself some day.

I have been threatening to make an appearance in the BV, now that I am back working in the town I will hopefully be buying a round soon, as for James Forrest, I think the wee man is the easy option for some, Gordon, Neil & now Ronny all rate the wee man, we can all have our opinions but at this point in time GMS has the jersey and hopefully this will push Jamesy bhoy…. Don’t think Ronny should play both, but what do I know !

I hope you can make it one day – I was surprised at the effect it had on me. Massive.

Me and two mates performed a re-run of Big Tam’s goal – without a ball. And just seeing the spot where Cesar raised the cup, and being able to stand there, well, I was greeting.

The most poignant bit for me was finding the spot on the terraces where my 3 uncles from Clydebank stood with their mates on that wonderful day.

Only one of them left now. When I came home and showed him the photos we were both greeting like weans.

Again, IF we go through, we will have United Away after the first game and St J at Home after the second. Usually, we are Away in the SPFL after having been Away in Europe and usually it is to Ross County, ICT or Aberdeen so I suppose Dundee is an improvement!

  25. A few posts dismissive of the importance of Neil McCann.

Never, ever underestimate the influence he wields as a Sky ‘pundit.’

Anything he chooses to make an issue of at half time or full time (or even both), on the station broadcasting the game live, sets the media agenda for the next several days and has a direct impact on the decision making of the SFA Compliance Officer, who acts in response to the media.

Neil McCann, odious little twerp that he is, can potentially hurt Celtic in terms of refereeing decisions and suspensions any time he chooses.

Must have drank the same thing as you……dosed off on my bus home and was awakened by a young guy questioning whether i was at my stop and needed to get off.

My initial recognition of my whereabouts told me that i was about a mile past my stop and so i got off and started to walk back to where i should have got off.

It had been a while since i was in that area, even though it was not too far away from my home but when i was walking along i was thinking………this place has changed a lot.

The penny slowly dropped as to where i was and it was actually about 3 miles away from my stop and i had been walking the wrong way.

At least it was a nice night for a walk and it kinda helped me sober up before i eventually got back!

I agree. I think he played a big part in getting Boerrigter banned for diving in that St. Johnstone game.

He didn’t just comment on it, he was like a dog with a bone, much the same as with the Craig Gordon yellow on Saturday

I agree. I believe that the dismissals of McCann`s agenda as being insignificant are made because that (insignificant) is what they should be and what we would like them to be. Unfortunately, the readership of popular `papers cannot be relied upon to think so McCann`s views do have a negative effect.
