Club-v-country has never been so acute as Celtic-Scotland right now

937

These pages have seen Gordon Strachan written off many times since those four days in August 2005 when Celtic conceded nine goals to Artmedia and Motherwell. Last night, as Scotland manager, he got the breaks. First, at the most ridiculous dive for a penalty ever perpetrated by a player on a yellow card (and I have seen Steven Naismith), then, when tired defensive limbs contrived to concede a late winner for Scotland.

If he gets a result away to Slovenia on Sunday, he will have earned whatever grudging appreciation goes his way. A generation of adults have never seen Scotland at an international tournament. They don’t know the joys of losing 3-0 to Morocco, watching a defensive wall shirk at a free kick, or celebrating as an Iranian scored an own goal to deliver a point. It’s time they learned.

Little about Scotland’s success is good news for Celtic. Should we win the league, our first qualification round will start two weeks after the tournament kicks off. Although that round is unlikely to provide a particularly stiff challenge, consider what happened to Newco when they arrived unprepared against Luxembourg semi-professionals.

Even if Scotland don’t reach the finals in Russia, a second place finish in the group for Scotland would see the players face two play-off games in the middle of our Champions League group games, and the possibility of a League Cup final.

Brendan Rodgers will wish his players every success, but he would surely not be too distressed to share hard luck stories with them when they return to training next week. The club-v-country debate has kicked around for decades, but I doubt if any club/country combo has seen it as acute as it is for Celtic and Scotland right now.

Catch up with this CQN Podcast from last month when we interviewed Celtic star from the Centenary season, full back Chris Morris. It’s a great listen…

  1. Chair Bhoy, Absolutely if you spend all day speaking to and working with people who only encourage your dellusion then that’s what happens.

Whenever I read the madness over there I always think of the floodlights story, they will believe anything that fits with the narrative.

  2. In the game against Hibs last Saturday with K.T. in the centre of the defence we missed his attacking play,Hayes ended up playing left back just as ineffective as he was playing as a winger.Last night at right back he looked very uncomfortable. He is outstanding in his position please leave him there.

  3. KT didn’t have his best game last night but he was more than acceptable, even when considering he played out of position. It’s barely worth talking about never mind worrying.

i was thinking about your pal JOHN today.i don’t know why, just came into my head.

    ======

I’ll never forget him D. He introduced me to street football in Suffolk St and he could play a bit.

Took me to Cathkin to see Third Lanark gub Stenhousemuir 8 – 2 or thereabouts. Jocky Robertson was the Hi Hi keeper.

John went to Germany on leaving Sr Mungo’s to join the Marist Order but I bumped into him on the Gallowgate at the Barrowland entrance about a month before I returned home from Londin to start at Cowlglen in 1966.

I was surprised to see him but he explained he had a a change of heart, not from being a religious but on which role to take.

He was off to Rome to become a priest but was killed in a tragic car accident some time later.

I couldn’t get my head around that bit, he had all the talent and brains to go to the very top, I mean white smoke stuff.

I think a couple of fellow Scots/ex Mungo were in the car too but my memory is sketchy on that bit.

I still have a pair of skating boots I bought off his brother Jim in 66.

I think I’ll take them to The People’s Palace to see if they might want to display them.

    Memories eh?.

    Just waiting to ambush you.

First thing you learn is that you always got to wait

Me too. Strange place – but better than the Amphora.

  12. GREENINBINGLEYINOSLO. just intrigued by your blog name is the bingley bit as near bradford keighley area .in another life used to deliver round that area hail hail.

  13. The Tim Reaper, unless there are crazy results elsewhere we will have to beat Wales one way or the other to make play offs, If they lose or draw with Georgia we could get 2nd place by drawing in Cardiff however we would then come 9th of the 2nd place teams and would still lose out.

Our only real chance of making Qualifiers is to win last 2 games & hope Scotland don’t win their final game.

In other words we have very little chance & to be honest we don’t deserve to progress.

  14. The fact that Scotland , for decades , has selected Celtic players for the National Team, grudgingly and only when they really had little option makes me sad and angry. If memory serves me correctly, this current campaign started with very few Celtic players and now their hand is forced by our success. Strange that since that happened, Scotland results have improved dramatically, funny that.

Now I would suggest that Scotland will not make it trhough to Russia, even if they win on the weekend.

Sad, but I say, Hell mend them, only themselves to blame.

  21. Fairhill Bhoy,

If you find a video on youtube you want to post, there’ll be a button under the screen where the vid. is playing called ‘share’ (it’s a picture of a wee arrow pointing right ) tap on that and you’ll get some options – one of which is “copy”. Click or tap on that and the link will be copied.

Then, come back here and double tap the box where tou type – if you’re using a tablet – if it’s a grown-up computer click the right mouse button – and select “paste.
