Colts and 40 years of appalling development

468

For close to two decades Celtic youth teams have dominated Scottish development leagues. We invest more in youth football than anyone else, we flood the Scottish leagues with graduates from our academy, and we harvest the occasional gem for the first team.

The current squad has Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Eoghan O’Connell (who I think has a genuine chance) and Liam Henderson, who all made the step-up but for 40 years our record in maturing youth talent has been appalling.

Care to guess the last successful striker Celtic brought through the system?

Clubs who regularly finish behind Celtic in the youth league table produce far more first-team talent, some of whom Celtic pay money to sign later in their careers. What Dundee United, Hibs, Hamilton Accies and others can do, which Celtic have been reluctant to do, it blood young players in the first team early.

Celtic’s reasons for this are valid. They have championships to win every season, and even when that is a formality, dropping points to anyone is cause for a crisis. We do not have the most conducive environment for youthful endeavours.

In recent times we’ve tried to help players bridge the gap between youth football and the Celtic first team by sending them out on loan. Callum McGregor benefited from this but it’s hard to find evidence the strategy is delivering.

Celtic have wanted a ‘colts’ team for 50 years, a place where youthful talent can come up against the harsh environment of fully grown men. I know one chairman of a successful developer of youth players who believes that if they are not thoroughly exposed to ‘real’ football between the ages of 16 and 19 they will be lost to the game by 20.

Frustration at a perceived lack of progress kicks in, then unhelpful habits take over.

No one can say with any great conviction that a colts team will solve anything, but it might. For that reason, it’s worth trying.

Time is running out for orders of books and DVDs for Christmas from the CQN Bookstore.  We’ve a great range of new and classic titles, fill your boots!

Can any of the Res 12 guys please advise the definitive position of the Celtic board….. have you been told that they will not be taking Res 12 forward? And that it is now at an end… or…. as the chairman indicated at the agm, they are considering all the NEW facts provided and, I assume, discussed at the recent meeting of board and Res 12 guys…

We have all been very very patient for too long now we need to know if it is finished or still a progressing… if it is the former we need to DEMAND a statement from the board to that affect….failing that I and I would encourage all other shareholders to write to The Chairman demanding an answer…..

We all at least can decide as individually and collectively what action we might wish to take to let these custodians know we will not be taken for second class mugs …..I note on etims that apparently the board members attending were disrespectful to the Res 12 guys, is that the case ? If so it is absolutely shocking and beneath contempt …. “who are these people we demand to know”

Apologies for the rant but please can I have answers to put me out of my misery and can get on with life ……HH

    ===========================================

The top questions for me going into the meeting as a result of what happened from end October through the AGM and after, which included circulation of Activity and Conclusions from the activity to signatories and Celtic and a one to one meeting with Celtic about the process and another preparation one meeting between three requistitioners were:

    1. Are Celtic going to take this forward?

    2. If not, why not?

    then

    3. How will they let their shareholders know of their reasons? (Its not our job, Celtic gave their reasons not to adopt Res12 in the Official AGM Report in 2013 (it was unnecessary) will they wait until next AGM to do same and justify or will they put out a statement now?.

If they are going to take it forward (UEFA/SFA have made it clear they will only deal with Celtic so they must take the lead.)

    4. Do they accept that based on what has come to light not just about behaviour in 2011 but in SFA response to public and private questions since that there is serious deception at play by one or both parties?

    5. Do they propose to address those issues arising since 2011?

    6. Which ones?

    7. What are their proposals for taking matters forward?

    8. Will those proposals be perceived as a definite commitment or as more delaying tactic?

    9. What commitment assurance can they give that will avoid the latter?.

Key to accepting there was a genuine commitment was some indication of a willingness to base decisions to take matters forward or not on a readiness to use all the information provided no matter its source, especially as the provenance issue that excludes it can be overcome by involving the CFCB or will disappear after the justice system has run its course.

I did not see that indication emerging although it still might.

  7. Gutted with this news, but not really surprised.CQN,does not speak for the vast majority of Celtic fans, much as some would like to think. As we know,so many have no idea about Res 12,or dont want to.

Some on here can wail and gnash their teeth at the fact that a great majority of the support, just want to see Celtic pumping the Monkeys, and winning as much as possible.Indeed, when I was younger, and my father,God rest him, would be railing against the Kelly board,I never gave a hoot. The amount of STs sold this season should give you an inkling of what the majority of fans want.A winning team, and a pumping of whatever mob come out of the Southside. We have a successful season, and the same amount will be sold next year.

Its just the way it is.

  13. On this blog over the last few years we’ve been told we don’t need the part of Celtic that relies on Rangers.

    =======================================================================

To be honest , mate ,

I have been expecting us to do that in our last couple of games ,where we scraped home ( in score terms ) , in spite of being utterly dominant.

Brendan has to deal with a significant injury list and frankly ,I hope he is husbanding resources meantime.

So that we achieve that score on New Years Eve.

Must tell you , I saw most of the last hun game.

They`ll give us a bit of a fight. Particularly at Ibrox.

  16. Some would do well to remember that there was plenty of anxiety in the Celtic Board Room after the debacle against Sevco at Hampden last season.

Were there not concerns about Season Book Sales before Brendan’s appointment?

Did Phil Mac Giolla Bhain not allege one of the PLC’s Director’s stated ‘That will bankrupt Scottish football.’ When Mr Desmond listened to a report on Res 12 and related matters, during a board meeting?

The PLC that gave us two seasons of the unfortunate RD, the European exits, the penalties defeat by Sevco, are the same ones that appear to have shunned any attempt to clean up the regulation and administration of our game.

The pursuit of money at all costs is short sighted and history will not look favourably on those that have turned their back on the ethos of Celtic Football Club. In my opinion.

“Celtic is a club for everyone who believes in football as a medium for healthy pleasure, entertainment and social integration. The Club always has been and always will simply aim to be the team of the people.”

From the Celtic ‘Corporate’ Mission Statement

    _______________________________________________________

Offshore Game Report, extract, November 16th 2016,

    A FAILURE OF GOVERNANCE

“Today, Celtic will respond to shareholders at their AGM who believe the time has come to ask the UEFA, the European football authority to intervene in the licensing issue, but the matter of what to do about the failings of the original inquiry will be left unresolved.

This points to one of the many governance failures of football. Who can hold the football authorities to account? If a football association cannot be trusted to ensure fair play over issues as fundamental as the awarding of league titles, and investigating allegations of foul play, fans may as well give up and watch the wrestling instead.

With the parliamentary Culture, Media and Sport select committee now firmly focused on football governance, this could finally be the time for a long overdue, external intervention.”

    Night all.
