Colts and 40 years of appalling development

468

For close to two decades Celtic youth teams have dominated Scottish development leagues. We invest more in youth football than anyone else, we flood the Scottish leagues with graduates from our academy, and we harvest the occasional gem for the first team.

The current squad has Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Eoghan O’Connell (who I think has a genuine chance) and Liam Henderson, who all made the step-up but for 40 years our record in maturing youth talent has been appalling.

Care to guess the last successful striker Celtic brought through the system?

Clubs who regularly finish behind Celtic in the youth league table produce far more first-team talent, some of whom Celtic pay money to sign later in their careers. What Dundee United, Hibs, Hamilton Accies and others can do, which Celtic have been reluctant to do, it blood young players in the first team early.

Celtic’s reasons for this are valid. They have championships to win every season, and even when that is a formality, dropping points to anyone is cause for a crisis. We do not have the most conducive environment for youthful endeavours.

In recent times we’ve tried to help players bridge the gap between youth football and the Celtic first team by sending them out on loan. Callum McGregor benefited from this but it’s hard to find evidence the strategy is delivering.

Celtic have wanted a ‘colts’ team for 50 years, a place where youthful talent can come up against the harsh environment of fully grown men. I know one chairman of a successful developer of youth players who believes that if they are not thoroughly exposed to ‘real’ football between the ages of 16 and 19 they will be lost to the game by 20.

Frustration at a perceived lack of progress kicks in, then unhelpful habits take over.

No one can say with any great conviction that a colts team will solve anything, but it might. For that reason, it’s worth trying.

Time is running out for orders of books and DVDs for Christmas from the CQN Bookstore.  We’ve a great range of new and classic titles, fill your boots!

Indeed. And therein lies a major problem.

Do you refuse refuge in case a bad apple/murderous bastard sneaks in too?

Not an easy one. In fact,I doubt that there is a solution, never mind an easy one.

We can be vigilant,of course. But how do you regulate for a lorry ploughing into a market?

My thoughts exactly. All the lower-league teams knew they were more deserving of that place, they said nothing.

That they are correct-and vocal-now just amplifies their previous silence.

Btw,I’ll bet that if Third Rangers need a place the silence will again be deafening.

I have had Celtic TV here for 4 years and really have had few problems with it.My Internet is not the best,so sometimes I have no idea if any problems come from that,or CTV itself. Now and again it will be a bit sticky, but on the whole,I have to say it is OK.

Neil Doncaster has been booted off the board of the EPFL.

The highly influential European Professional Football League body is the main way for leagues to communicate with UEFA on matters such as reform of the European competitions.

Recently the EPFL have expressed their opposition to plans to give the top four clubs from the four leading nations automatic places in the group stage of the Champions League.

Doncaster was voted onto the board for the 2013-2016 cycle but clearly made little impression on his European counterparts with the chairman and vice chairman coming from the Swedish and Danish leagues.

    I bet they are.

  8. For what it’s worth, I believe that the good people behind res 12 made their big mistake in allowing the board to “shelve” the proposal at the agm, 3 years ago. That tactic has now turned into a saga that will eventually become part of the Celtic story future generations will look back at, wondering what might have been. The requisitioners have been misled and whilst I commend them for their efforts, I’m sure that they would wish to have pursued res 12 in a slightly different way. The board and the supporters may have similar aims regarding Celtic’s success but their respective agendas are quite different. I’d like to wish all Celtic fans, everywhere, a happy Christmas and hope we all enjoy the successful football season this looks like being .

  10. Re res 12 I have yet to see anything definitive telling me the Board will not support this. Apologies to the four if I have missed this.

Notwithstanding that , and I am no lawyer, as I understand it the resolution has been carried forward from one agm to the next. Does that not mean the Board are duty bound to formally deal with the resolution and if they want it defeated, put it to a vote.

Writing this more for information than anything.

As another poster on here has said I can only admire the time effort and committment of the four and my thanks to them.

  23. The affirmation of what Celtic’s stance is was the final straw.

It was there staring at us, a lot of us just didn’t want to recognise it.

Now it’s shouting loudly telling us roll up and pay…..your last dime.

Think that’s how the Penny Arcade goes ?

Are we so shallow that we will mimic them in following a hollow facade ?

Surely, not, but at this time, our silence is deafening.

  24. Why all the angst about Res 12?

Did anyone honestly think that it would end any other way?

If our Board and major shareholders are happy to get stiffed, who are we to complain.

  25. The game was up as soon as the huns took the field against Brechin, everyone in Scottish football stood back and laughed as they did and here we are four years later a Celtic house divided, we suffered all through their cheating and we are still suffering after their cheating was announced.

Res 12 was our hope that somehow the SFA could be brought to book and reformed and we would all skip like little hooped lambs into a bright new future alas it seems no one at our club wants to be part of what needs to take place.

And when all is said and done what the feck does Scottish football have to offer the world, a gravy train for incompetent placemen and back room deals to keep “the gemme” alive and let’s face it ten years ago most of us would have gone anywhere in the world and told other football fans we have the greatest club game in the world.

Celtic boards have come and gone and come and gone in my five decades as a Celtic supporter, made no difference to me who they were or the job they done until we were on the brink of extinction and now again here we stand at the brink of extinction, not financial extinction but a deeper kind of extinction of the Soul of the club and we can shout all day long about masons and torys and any other bogeyman you want to stick up there but the fact is from the many Tims back home I’ve spoken to they don’t give a shit about justice or the SFA they just happy enough to be humping the huns once more.

And where was I the last derby game, glued to my computer watching so I am complicit in the scam, my celebrations hollow as I know it’s a scam.

People vote with their feet and the board know this to a tee.

A sold out Celtic Park for the Sevco game is all they need to know to continue the same deaf dumb and blind policy they have towards the game.

We the Celtic Family were always going to pay the biggest fine of all for the hun machines machinations.

I’m still hoping against hope that something will be done about the game but corruption is lauded all over the world why would our wee part of it be any different.

To the Resolution 12 Bhoys thank you, you took a stand and invested your hearts and souls and minds into this fight and I hope that somehow you will find resolution for yourselves if nothing else.

The last four years have seen my support of Celtic undermined by a gnawing sensation in my gut that we would do nothing, I remained optimistic as that is my natural state!! but reading back this morning I have that same feeling in the morning when you wake up hoping against hope that you didn’t spend your whole wages in one weekend:))
