Commons phenomenal contribution

737

You will remember times, not so long ago, when a successful Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in any competition, even against lower league opposition. Already this season we have achieved what until recently was regarded as beyond the club, won two games away from home without conceding.

Helsingborgs are not of the calibre of opponents Celtic can anticipate facing in the group stages of the Champions League (assuming no bizarre reversals), but they disposed of the Polish champions 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round and are as resourceful as Aalborg or Utrecht.

There was plenty to be pleased with in last night’s but the most striking element was the performance of Kris Commons. He scored goal and was credited with an assist, has scored both our league goals this season and had a further assist against Helsinki; an incredible return for a player who three weeks ago was drawing comment on the size of his shorts!

  9. May I say too Paul that Samaras also got a goal and assist too, terrific performances by both KC and Sammy in Europe this season

(Over 3 games, Samaras has 2 goals, 2 assists and Commons has 1 goal, 2 assists plus role in Hoopers goal v Helsinki)

traditionalist88. We sure are, and that victory last night will make players we are tracking very interested in the hoops.I honestly believe any player worth his salt would want to play on the Champions league stage and surely now Celtic wont let it slip it is so close we can almost taste it.H.H.

  12. Just a thought, has Ki actually gone yet? Laudrup said it should have been done by now the other day, maybe second thoughts after almost assurance of CL football.

Wouldn’t surprise me, would have thought Ki would only be interested in an Arsenal or Liverpool, not Swansea

Confidence plays a huge part for any footballer and even though Kris Commons didn’t have a great season last season (by his standards set the previous year) he started off reasonably well, creating a couple of goals early on in the season.

He was also playing wide on the right which at that stage last season seemed to be an unusual position for him as he was more effective on the left.

He then missed a penalty at 0-0 in a 0-1 home defeat to St Johnstone, picked up a wee injury and was then sent off on his return in an other defeat at Hearts.

I think he also was carrying niggly injuries and was being kept out of the team by James Forrest and his season seemed to stagnate as he only got sporadic appearences but still managed to come up with a number of assits and topped the season off with a wonderful goal in the last ever match against our one-time city rivals.

He got lucky against Aberdeen when his shot was let in by the goalie but in football, sometimes all you need is a lucky break and has taken it on from there wil good performances in Europe and even against Ross County.

I read something on here the other day (apologies to the poster who highlighted it as I can’t remember your name) in defence of Kris Commons “non-tracking back” against Ross County saying that some players are coached as to not race after an “unwinnable” ball for fear of injury or conceding free kicks but rather to take up a good position and trust the defence to do its job and find you with an out-ball.

At one stage last night, he didn’t take that advice and went back to make a challenge that he was never going to be successful in and he picked up a knock. let’s hope it is nothing serious as he can be a very important player for us this season.

  14. Thought Commons was back to his best last few games but last night he was immense.

It’s funny on the shorts debate I always though Lenny was a bit of a lardy when he played but changed my mind when I saw him at a U2 concert. He had a black jumper on and was as built like a middle weight boxer.

Maybe it’s just what the hoops does to stocky players (wee Maloney looked that way too).

On the previous article you made reference to Moniaive. What were your experiences of the place?

    >>>>>>

Okay, at the risk of landing myself in it, here goes.

The area that the town in is beautiful. No doubt. A few of us had gone down there on a wee day out. It was the early 70’s and we were kinda long haired ‘city bhoys’. We were informed that the stone post in the centre of town was where witches were burned once upon a time. Were we gullible? I do not know. But we found it strange that there was such a centrepiece of such pride.

It was a Saturday. We went into the nearest pub. On entry, the hubbub died down ; you could’ve heard a pin drop. We were sullenly served, and on request of a second round we were told, “Make it your last.”

The other drinkers in the pub all remained silent while we were there.

On departure the noise immediately resumed within.

It was a weird experience. That’s all. The countryside around there is attractive. When people think of Scotland they always veer towards the highlands etc.,.

The S.W countryside is beautiful, imo, in its own right.

It was a long time ago,and like they say, ” The past is a different country. ”

    HH!

  16. Our goals were clinical and another looked on the cards near the end. Helsingborgs gave us the run-around for at least 30 minutes of the first half. But for FF ( the good FF, that is) we may well have been hit below the waterline – a few times. It reminded me of the second half last season at Ibrox – the 3-2 game.

We have to make sure that they don’t get even the merest glimmer of hope at CP. In other words our mid-field must perform.

  17. Paul67 et al

No doubt about Kris Common’s contribution but every player put in a fair effort, and if we get through next week then credit to all. It would be a terrific achievement. Special mention to Fraser Forster, a great signing. Liverpool are reported to have bid £7.5m for Jack Butland, and I believe Birmingham have already turned down £6m for him so we have a bargain in the big man. Need to reshape the midfield for next week, and Victor Wanyama could be the man to give the defence a little more protection. If we achieve four victories in the qualifiers we can push on from there.

  18. Paul

Also, not just three weeks ago someone commented on the size of his shorts, the Hun on BBC live updates said Commons, I quote, ‘looks to carry a few pounds too many’ – shocking comment, especially as KC is looking well! Funnily enough it was fairly soon after he had opened the scoring……

  19. Kris still looks to me few pounds over weight .. But great to see him finding form again.

That really is like a new signing

  21. Have the SFA allocated one of the european places for next season to go to Ramsden cup winners yet..

Ooops forgot the kicked when down team arent allowed in europe.

  22. good call paul67, i thought moving him to a more central role meant the ball stuck up front a lot more. i hope lenny took note, he could do a job for us in the group stages

  23. iv defo got a feelgood factor today. :) I can only say, that at H/T last night, i was tearing my hair out.

1-0 up and at times 6 men in front of the ball. !!!!

SB running about like a dafty… Kayal nearly thru on goal… Sammi & KC both suspect defensively !!! Hoops kinda lost looking.. and the defense as a whole just panicked, every single time…

I have to praise the manager, for the switch. (whether it was forced or not im not sure)

young JF was exactly the player we wanted on the right..

SB was more central and not roaming. and suddenly we had more of the ball. and looked a far superior side :)

I am as guilty as anyone, as having a 1 game mindset, regarding were we are..

I do believe that the pressure on Celtic players in the qualifier means we panic more than other sides. I also think, the league set up will settle us down..

    what do i see today..

we are a side that depend heavily on enigmatic players.. (Sammi & KC)

but we have a goalie who has changed my mind. and looks potentially top class.

we have a world class enigma in sammi, (left foot cross for goal, missed chance for 3rd)

Young JF & TR are both potential great players.

and im starting to get excited again…

all i want is more of the 2nd half celtic please.. :)

  24. W missed Commons last year. Oh his day he is a great player that can to something special. Keep it up Kris.

    Paul67,

Now for Joquin Boghassain and a centre half please.

I’m actually orginally from Moniaive, but born in 1976 so no real memory of it in the 70s. I can quite imagine in the 70s the place could have been quite suspicious of outsiders, but that is certainly not the case these days. Less Sevco supporting inbreds, although there are still many, propping up the bar today. You are more likely to bump into rich hippies, teachers, poets and rock stars, the guy from Franz Ferdinand, lives there, these days!! As kids, me and my mates started a bit of fenian revolution and the village has flourished every since!!! You are right about the countryside, it’s a beautiful part of the world. I’m quite happy people pass it by on the way to the Highlands!! You should pay another visit!!

  26. Mort,

    I’ve seen them…nice!

I’m always looking for something a bit different…got an old 60’s one in a darker green with gold diagonal stripes and real shamrocks not 4 leaf clover! ;-)

  27. What about my assist? I yelled ma heid aff for Commons to shoot when that ball came over from Big Sammy. Come to think of it, I’m always yelling ma heid aff!
