Copenhagen form drags on league resumption

232

Copenhagen resumed league duty after their winter break on Friday with a defeat to 13th placed (of 14) Edbjerg.  That result damaged an already under-pressure league challenge, Midtjylland are 7 points clear of second place Copenhagen with 10 games remaining.

Form going into the break on 16 December was scrappy.  Four single goal wins followed a 4-1 thumping by Midtjylland.  The last time Copenhagen fans saw their team win a competitive game by more than a single goal was 3 November.  They qualified for the Europa League knockout round courtesy of two wins in the group stage, both against Lugano, who are 7th in Switzerland.

Nothing is easy at this stage away from home in Europe.  Copenhagen are at a level right now that Aberdeen cannot dream of, we will face a far tougher challenge on Thursday than we did on Sunday.  Notwithstanding that, if Neil Lennon is as prepared as he normally is on European nights, there is reason for confidence.

    Atletico were disgusting. But predictable.

Rangers not quite as bad as A.M. , However I remember Ian Archer describing the attacks on wee Jinky as being done on a rota basis. Thereby avoiding a sending off.

Think it was the 3-1 win against the hun at Celtic Park .

1-0 down 10 mins to go . Penalty to Rangers.Off the bar .

See if I can find it.

    I seem to remember Jock as manager of Scotland , after his players were pelted with oranges in Seville I think , saying ;

    ” Well . That`s Spanish football for you .”

Thought it was an enthralling game. A defensive masterclass by Atletico, one to be admired. Costa and Simeone both close to the edge but great characters. Both sets of supporters were also superb.

  6. Favourite hun game, mines got to be when Henke nutmegged

the big lumpowood centre half and then lobbed Klos.

The reaction of the ball bhoys behind the goal said it all.

    Can’t even remember the score.

*one of my favourite hun games of all time, up there with the original 5-1 Big Yogi in sannies and the Davie Hay rocket shot and chastising their greatest ever thug 1/4 Final SC games.

This was a winner take all game with a place in the knockout stages at stake. We had tied 1-1 with them at hades where they missed a penalty so off we headed tae the Holy Ground for the all ticket game on the Balloch tae Brigton train.

As we alighted at Hyndland tae change over tae the Airdrie via Bellgrove line huns were getting on.

This was the same night as the final episode of the Fugitive on tele on both sides of the Atlantic which had gripped viewers so both sets of fans were light heartedly suggesting they would find out who killed Kimble’s wife as they would be back in the hoose early enough tae see it.

The huns had surprisingly went on a spending spree that summer with 6 new signings, they like us were guilty of keeping the lid on their own biscuit tin but Lisbon and Nuremberg had shattered them.

4 of their new faces were in the lineup while we fielded the Lions with local lhad Willie O’Neill on the bench.

In an effort tae quell any trouble a pre-match warning went out to both sets of fans. Anyone waving flags or offensive banners would be removed from the ground.

Unsurprisingly the hun end was awash with banners including the wee dikeplugger, union jacks, French flags with craft insignia in them etc and allowed tae remain while a lone banner unfurled in the Celtic end saw a battalion of Glasgow’s finest enter en masse tae lift the culprit(s).

That night the chant “you can shove yer orange banners up yer arse” was first aired.

The huns opened the scoring early doors when the wee bunion aka henderson in an offside position was allowed tae score intae the hun end, the stand side linesman however didnae run back tae the centre circle as was the custom but stood his ground to no avail as big Tiny wisnae interested.

Wee Lemon looked tae have equalised as he took a rebound from the Danish goalie and rocketed it home, nae chance again said Tiny and ruled wee ten thirty offside.

Shortly after that we had a stonewall penalty turned down, didn’t look s if was going tae be our night.

Then with quarter of an hour tae go they were given a penalty and it really was as Luggy brought the wee bunion down in full flight. Now they had missed a penalty in the first game when the faither saved penman’s shot so up this time came big “kai yai yippy the pope’s an effin hippie” as they chanted after his big blooter 16 month earlier won them the SC.

Wallop aff the underside of the bar and as penman was lining up tae thump home the rebound which if he had would have went through the net landing at Brigton Cross.

But no the daft big dane pushes the former Dundee legend out of the way and very weakly headed for goal. “You cannae dae that” was the cry fae the Jungle as Bobby Murdoch walked over and caught the ball, a wee bit dangerous but he knew the rules as did our Big Mhan in the dugout.

That really gave us a lift and 2 minutes later we have a corner on the Jungle side, over the ball comes, their goalie comes out and flaps at it and the ball is in the back of the net with wee Wispy running up the park his arm in the air.

Parkheid is now jumping as 5 minutes after that Lemon sets up Chopper who hits his rebound high intae the net. No done yet as 6 minutes after that the wee Buzz Bomb nicks the ball aff a couple of hesitant hun defenders and rolls it home.

As he turned tae run up the park one of the few hun supporters left in the sparse part of the stadium ran down the terracing jumped over the wee dike and grabbing a corner flag, aye even with a shamrock on it, ran after wee Bobby, fortunately big davie provan on seeing this ran and body checked the thug who was quickly huckled by the polis.

Unfortunately for big provan less than 3 weeks later he would break his own leg in a rash tackle on wee ten thirty which would leave him on the sidelines for a prolonged period of time and more or less end his hun career.

As for that brilliant night the Big Mhan claimed this victory was the greatest under his management, it should be noted this was 3 months after Lisbon.

On the train home that night a hun I knew and his mate came on at High Street, on seeing him I gave him a big smile tae which he retorted “eff off Tontine, you were scheidting yersell when we got that penalty”. The whole carriage burst out laughing with his wee bluenose mate telling him tae shut the eff up.

Athletico Madrid can rot in hell as far as I am concerned- no redemption, no excuses, no forgiveness- the absolute end of all sportsmanship, the death of football.

UEFA were a disgrace. The sequel wasn’t any better with Jock and Jinky both recieving death threats before the return match – I suspected then, as a 16 year old, and I believe to thus day that that tie was swamped with gambling and corruption- it would have appeared too much of a fix if it had happened in the final, the money was made in the semi.

I don’t care how new they are – they can foff as far as I am concerned.

One of my great memories at CP.

My 3 brothers in law and myself were parked at the Hun end as per usual.

On the way back to the car, it was bedlam with Huns arguing, fighting and threatening everyone and anyone.

It was ugly and we were beginning to question the wisdom of leaving so soon after the game ended.

The oldest brother, who carried coal up closes in Partick, was fearless and full of excitement he said loudly, too loudly we thought.

“What did they expect? They were playing the European champions.”

Space opens up around us with ugly folk looking around.

To which one of the younger brothers says “If they come for you I’m on their side.”

First time I ever felt unsafe at a Celtic game.

Well apart from the Leeds game at Hampden where the crush was lung busting.

Been up since bloody 3am as a bhoy and his mates headed off to Copenhagen via London.

    What a great read back.

MM- If I record the game I love watching the reaction of the ball bhoys when we score. I have always loved that particular one where Henrik shows utter class and dinks Klos.

Tontine – wow what a story, I have said it before you should write a book of short story’s about games you have been at. Brilliant 👍

  20. I recall the two 3-1 games well.

Following the league cup game our P5 class was buzzing the next day!

My recollection of The Scottish cup game, is that big brother got to go to the game and I was left at my granny’s. In comes my blue nosed uncle (he was early!) in a bit of a mood and tells me that Celtic won 2-1. “Oh that’s not how it finished” I said. “Oh?” he says optimistically ” Naw it was 3-1″ I reply. My uncle had went to hs bed before my da had picked us up to go home. That game made Davie Hay for me.

  21. Good read back of the ‘night shift’ crowd.

GG, I have similar memories of leaving the Holy Ground after a Ne’erday match against Thums. Coming from the Woodlands scheme in Bothwell we had parked just off London Road among the hordes throngs. After the game (which we had won of course) we were heading back to the car, incommunicado sans scarves, when one of our Ibrox-leaning neighbours spots us and roars “Haw Reilly, Cassidy, Rooney, Boyle what ur ye dae’in up oor end?” You could almost hear the hundreds of heads/necks turning this way and that trying to spot the Fenians!

JINKYREDSTAR@12.55am that thought about gambling at the Atletico game never occurred to me! Makes sense now you have said it.
