Cough up for Killie

944

The SFA, SPL and SFL confirmed revelations yesterday that they met at Hampden on Friday evening and released a 126 word joint statement.  It claimed “all three parties have been involved in productive discussions for some time on the subject of league reconstruction”.

Be that as it may, you could put your house on the fact that there would be no talk of hastily-arranged league reconstruction in the next few weeks if there remained a possibility that SPL clubs would vote a Newco into the league at their meeting on 4 July.

Disingenuous: lacking in frankness, candour or sincerity.

There is no mention of subverting every rule in the game to ensure a team called ‘Rangers’ are positioned in as high a league system as possible.  The statement is completely disingenuous.  Having lost the battle to parachute Newco-Rangers into the SPL, Stewart Regan and Neil Doncaster have redrawn the battle lines.

Celtic supporters are the great cash cow that is expected to pay for the crimes of others.  It’s up to you if you want to Cough up for Killie (etc.).

Interesting article. I haven’t gone through the comments yet but have some idea what to expect.

I remember hearing a programme on Radio Four by a historian describing how he once showed a Chinese academic around a medieval church in England. During the reformation the carved frescoes had had all the faces obliterated, literally defaced. The Chinese academic took one look and remarked ‘I see you too have had a cultural revolution.’

It’s good to question received wisdom. From snippets I’ve read of Tom Devine I get the feeling there may be a similar reevaluation going on in Scotland.

  20. The continuing crisis enveloping Rangers football club has been a “gross failure of leadership” by both the football authorities in Scotland and the Scottish Government, former Labour MP for Glasgow, George Galloway has said as he calls for members of the Scottish Parliament to end their silence on the issue.

Writing in his exclusive Holyrood column, the Respect MP, who served as an MP in Scotland’s largest city for almost two decades, accused politicians sitting in Holyrood of actively seeking to distance themselves from the situation within Scottish football.

He also calls on the Chancellor to intervene at Westminster, and proposes measures that he says could be introduced to hold the football leagues accountable should a club default on their tax debts.

He writes: “The Chancellor of the Exchequer, to safeguard the taxpayer, should introduce special measures to compel the football leagues and, or, the national associations, to make recompense for the clubs that default on their tax debts.

“Now if Manchester United, heaven forfend, should go belly up, it would make just a tiny red entry in the debit column in the books of the Premier League, fed by the mega-billions of Sky and now BT. Not so with Rangers or even, I hazard, St Mirren or Cowdenbeath. The SPL and the SFA simply couldn’t afford failure.

“Which would certainly make them look a damn sight closer at who was running the football companies, ensuring it couldn’t happen by, perhaps, seeking personal indemnities from directors or requiring substantial upfront deposits from clubs in return for registration.” His comments come ahead of a crucial vote scheduled for 4 July when the 12 Scottish Premier League member clubs, including the Glasgow outfit, will cast their votes on whether to allow a newco Rangers to re-enter the top tier.

Allowing Rangers voting rights akin to all other clubs on its own readmission risks further fallout, Galloway claims, though the former Labour member reserved much of his criticism for those tasked with overseeing the Scottish game.

He adds: “Let’s see the sports minister, Shona Robison, banging some heads together now. She’s reported to have had a recent meeting with SPL chief Ralph Topping.

“But she’s said nothing publicly, and neither have the vast majority of MSPs, presumably because they don’t want to unleash the hate brigade. But football is too important to be silent about or to be left just to its administrators.”

  29. Its not often I disagree with Paul67, in fact its about as rare an occurrence as a Rangers owner with integrity. However we were not on the same page over the statement made by Celtic Supporters Association to threaten a boycott of clubs who voted Yes to Newco

Its not that I disagreed with the sentiment, its just that I found it unnecessary to issue the threat. SPL Chairmen would have known, without having to be told that any club who put money ahead of integrity , would be unlikely in the extreme to benefit from the Celtic £

Moving on from that, I am about to suggest a threat to boycott. Not to boycott any individual club, but rather to boycott the national team. The SFA will ultimately drive the solution here. They appear to be prepared to come up with a hybrid solution, which acknowledges only a passing nod to Sporting Integrity. The SFA should be reminded that this is not a situation where any single member club should have to pay any price whatsoever.

Their hybrid/incubator plan is a farce .A short term absence from the SPL and no penalty whatsoever for Rangers crimes, and no interest in pursuing what should be a lifetime ban for Murray and a full investigation of Smith and Souness is shameful.

The clubs may vote this out, however it shouldn’t even be on the table to vote for. Did the SFA attempt anything to save Gretna, or Clydebank or Third Lanark . Or do anything to help Motherwell or Livingston or Dundee ?

The only way to really rattle the SFA is for the Tartan Army to tell the SFA loud and clear that if they pervert sporting integrity , then the National team will suffer a backlash and the SFA will feel the pain financially. This has to be lead by fans of Aberdeen, ICT, Ross County and all of the clubs who have been wonderful in following the national team. Celtic fans are not in the vanguard of support for Scotland. Many , including me, support the National team. However we are not the driving force amongst the support.

Lets see if Regan puts Rangers ahead of Scotland. He is prepared to put Rangers ahead of justice and integrity, he would be very well advised not to risk the National teams future to show ludicrous preferential treatment to Rangers

Fwiw I don’t believe the bribe rumour, guaranteed nonsense., but also find it hard to believe the laudrup takeover as much As I’d love to

  31. Today, or in the next few days its likely that another SPL club will declare it’s intention with regard to Sevco 5088 entering the SPL, and amidst the negotiations taking place behind closed doors the news will come through, sometime this week that the scheduled vote on the 4th July has been cancelled.

Celtic FC amongst others have made direct debits from supporters bank accounts under season ticket terms for renewal and any proposed changes, to the league structure could easily be challenged on the basis that we were ‘duped’ into buying something that has been changed before we received it.

League reform in time for next season, just isn’t going to happen or at worst seems highly unlikely given that Celtic for example have at least 50% of our support paying by direct debit for season tickets. Agreement on Sevco entering Division 1 seems just as unlikely, and will meet with strong objection from clubs such as Falkirk to name but one, whose chairman has already bumped his gums.

The good people of Scotland have spoken, and this morning Ragers are still incredibly dead and I’ve never looked forward to a new Celtic season so much in my entire life.
