Craft needed to open defences, over to you, Brendan

124

15 games into the campaign and a rainy night in Perth is the setting for our next ‘biggest game of the season.’  Two points below us in the league, St Johnstone were on a decent run of form before capitulating at Ibrox on Sunday – only their second loss in 11 outings.

You know what to expect from them.  Tommy Wright will have watched Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Hamilton defend their penalty box and keep it tight.  He will play for penalties but hope to get men forward through a set piece whenever possible.

Saturday’s opponents, Aberdeen, endured extra time at Easter Road last night.  They have an extra day’s rest over Celtic, but advantage will be nullified if Celtic can get the job done in 90 minutes tonight.  As such, I would expect our strongest team to start the game, but what that is, is open to debate.  We need craft to open packed defences.

Over to you, Brendan.  Win tonight and it’s semi-final time at Hampden.

Really appreciate all the help for the Foundation ahead of the Great Scottish Run on Sunday.  It puts fuel in the tank like nothing else.  Thanks to everyone who has contributed, the link is here if you would like to join in.

  1. Couldn’t care less about Brendan’s nose. As long as he’s on the ball tonight.

Remember, God helps nose who help themselves.

HH. Helpful for smoking in the raincsc.

  2. Lets not give ‘Team Perth’ (as the Bunnet called them) a sniff!

    Hail Hail

Matt …right enough back to work.

Ok,I will bite.Just who are the players that Brendan wanted, and PL,never got for him?.No rumours, facts.

Just who are the players, the big hitters that the Board were trying to sell from under Brendans feet,?

    I will await your answers.Thanks.

  4. CELTIC BY NUMBERS (12:19 PM), it’s nothing to do with team changes… it is in fact the changing of kit that is the problem! Our Bhoys seem to play well below their best far more often when not wearing the hoops than when they are properly kitted out, resplendent in the famous colours of Celtic FC.

  5. Who would win in a fight to be Celtics right sided defender, between,Christian Gamboa,or Jack Hendry,?

I dont think even Rocky Balboa would beat Jack for that honour.

    Baffling.

  6. Crisis! What crisis?

Hopefully Brendan’s Bhoys will soon get out of their early season malaise and start playing with confidence and panache, routinely putting their opponents to the sword with a feast of fast, free flowing football that yields a barrage of goals. But to say that they are currently in “crisis” seems a little melodramatic.

With just one defeat in their last eight games across all competitions, and that to a last minute sucker punch in a game away from home on a dodgy plastic pitch (and in which they had almost 60% possession), having kept clean sheets in five of those eight games, any other club would be quite satisfied.

I would therefore proffer that, far from being “in crisis”, it is more a case of struggling to reach the extraordinarily high standards to which their supporters and other casual observers now expect of them in every game. So it is more a case of the reaction to recent performances being an indication of how good Brendan’s Celtic team has become, not a death knell to the end of an era.

They will turn out around and resume the procession to 10 and beyond.

I was more or less saying the same thing to a fellow Tim this morning.

For most of my life, Rangers supporters EXPECTED their team to win games and trophies whilst we HOPED our team would. This led to our dislike of their attitude of entitlement.

It seems to me that our support is now, in that area at least, behaving very much like the Huns did.

Understandable though it is, it is not a pleasant sight.

Strangely, though, at the same time as having expectations of success , many Celtic supporters still feel uncertain about the outcome of nearly every game we play! Strange days :-))

A capable team on paper , even though at least 4 of those names have been well below form recently.

I hope Brendan sticks with a settled side though ,too much chopping and changing does not work , as Sunday showed.

If thats the team its much as I expected. A return to a more usual line up. Some legs have been rested so I expect a decent work rate tonight and some graft. I think we could have rested KT for Izzy though before we play the Dons. He always gives 100% an could do with a wee break.

The rest of guys are on the top money in Scotland and we should be getting more out of them, ok its not EPL money but more than a lot of others. Time the players earned their corn. Fingers out tonight Lhads.

  14. We will get the team lines in 2 hours. Would expect a win regardless of who we put out, a performance on top of that would be great too. As long as Hendry isn’t involved i will feel very confident.

How about having some other guys teeth?

  16. So let me get this straight, Aberdeen, our next League opponents are already in the semifinal of the LC, but some Celtic supporters believe it would be better if we lose tonight, avoiding one possibly even two games at Hampden. Fantastic strategy I know, and yet Manchester United fans celebrated wildly at full time last night, and around the World in the knowledge that they won’t have to bother with another trip to Wembley, so we know that such a strategy can work to the benefit of both the supporters and the club. God bless all who share in it.

Aberdeen of course might see it differently.

Reminds me of that old joke, re the late Rev. Ian Paisley addressing the faithful in his initimable style…

“And when that day finally arrives there will be weeping there and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Jacob and all the prophets in the KIngdom of God……”

when suddenly he was interrupted by an old dear at the front bumping her gums and wailing, “What happens if you haven’t any teeth?”

    “Teeth will be provided!”

  18. HOT SMOKED

The difference between Celtic supporters expecting to win all the time and the sec support is glaring.

I don’t know a single Celtic supporter who wants to win at any cost.

Celtic supporters are rightfully proud knowing that every trophy and title was done fairly ,within the rules and with no nods or handshakes.

This is why these times are all so sweeter as we have triumphed against cheating and many barriers trying to stop us doing such so a little gloating and triumphalism is understandable.

You do a great disservice to many generations of Celtic supporters by comparing us to them.

    Wallies?

    Naw, no’ youse! The falsies!!??

As an aside…one day when I was about 8 ma mammy walked in from the scullery with her left hand clutching her teeth and her right holding a load of potato peelings.

She went to the fire and proceeded to throw her teeth in and stuff the peelings in her mouth. Madly she tried to get them back with hand and poker. Then she screamed and spat at me through the peel to help her. Apart from not recognising the language she used, I was incapacitated as I pished myself and rolled on the floor.

No chips for Matt that night!?

  20. Anybody hear about Jonny Hayes’ assistance to a young boy he saw being bullied in Glasgow?

Unknown to Jonny, the young boy was a Sevco supporter, but is now the proud owner of one of Jonny’s jerseys.

Can’t do links but it has been on Instagram & Twitter.

  21. Matt Stewart … might be your funniest post yet. Cheers!

(at the risk of crossing SFTB, I will give you my take on it/say what I thought HS was saying)

I hear what you are saying – we are not the same as them.

Triumphalism has always been their thing…. but Generation of Domination does have a triumphalistic ring to, so I do get what Hot Smoked is saying.

To be fair to Hot Smoked, I think there are different types/levels of triumphalism… there is a ‘we are going to beat you on the park/expect to win… which I agree is not native to Celtic, but is creeping in… but, the Sevco triumphalism has always been connected to a ‘superior race’ type of mentality, which goes beyond football …

to be fair to HS, I dont think he is suggesting that we are the latter sort, and I would agree with him.

but if I have got it all wrong, you or HS (or both) can straighten me out.

    :)
