Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

First game for me was SSW Innsbruck circa 1977, always remember back of the 10p programme was “win a ball” with my older cousin, but first game on my “own” still 1977, my mother thought me and one of the bhoys in the street had went to Albion Rovers, dogged the train to Carntyne, got a lift over, spent our “money” on badges and a pie and sat where the luggage should be on a double decker back to Phil Coles……once my mother got over the shock I got a slap around the head as I bought a badge “Peter Latchford is safer than the pill” as an 7 year old I hadn’t a clue, now wish I kept the badge

Did Livingston not have a few players around Snodgrass’s time, Leigh, Dorrans and I think a few others, sometimes not being near Celtic you might have a better chance, Andrew Robertson and many more before him, I think it’s harder to break through at Celtic if you are already there

  7. My first game was March 23rd 1962 – we bear Aberdeen, I was 4. All my life I knew we played Aberdeen and won, I knew it was just after my 4th birthday cos my uncle promised to take me to a game as a present – the detail came from Celtic Wiki – Paddy Crerand played that day. Glen was already belting out the Celtic Song on vinyl son’61 sounds right.

I remember telling the troops he was coming out on a hootenanny as it was his 75th shortly

Whit,we gonna be pushing some old bugger about in a bath chair? was the general opinion.

I thought he was MOM today, showed up Pep’s superstars.

Don’t think we’ll see him in the hoops now, but It might serve as a lesson not to overlook what’s under our noses.

  15. Like many on here I was pretty impressed with the performance of our second string. Turns out we know nothing. Just skimmed through Newsnow Celtic and saw this:

    Sky Sports- Inter outclass Celtic

By God, the forces of the establishment are fairly lining up against us! If we don’t win 5-0 on Wednesday it’ll be a full blown crisis!

Law he probably considered past it. His record at City proved that.

    Notwithstanding THAT goal…

As for Morgan,if Doc had still been in charge,JINKY would have been the star of 74. Morgan was a prick, and his subsequent non-career proves that v

  20. BMCUWP – good on yer auld da! My old father died in his early 60’s and had been too ill to go and see the Celtic for a number of years but he still followed them faithfully from afar. I was living in England at the time and used to come up as often as possible to see the bhoys!

My wife has told my sons and grandson that’s not to happen to me – in my dotage they have to make sure I get to the games! She’s even put it as an instruction in her Will, God Bless her. :>)

    Again,never watched tonight’s bounce match.

Absolute waste of time trying to judge players in these matches.

Just delighted that none of our likely starters on Wednesday were in Limerick today.

  23. Marketing, we are not selling the club nearly enough.

I just got an order for a bracelet with an old Barca crest on it, so I clicked on here to bring it up to download it, reason I am saying this is that I counted eight hun crests before I saw a Celtic one, someone needs there baws kicked at the club FFS :-)
