Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

    Gordon,

It’s easy to say we are miles in front.

We thought that before the semi final.

    Good luck big lad.

I would suggest, under Brendan ( a proper top class Manager) …. What ur average Joe gets rapped up about ( 442, 433, 352, 4231). Bla bla bla, is totally irrelevant . It’s more about top management, good instructions, good players playing yo their strengths.

Don’t say Brendan wouldn’t play 4231….. What do you know.??

Brendan’s starting formation will be flexible, and will adapt throughout games as per the requirement.

    So wheeesshhtt

    Ruggy,,

    Naw,naw,naw.

Griffiths will be the first name on Brendan’s teamsheet.

  8. Embdae leaving Leigh out of the starting Xl needs their head read IMO.

Moussa can only hope to achieve Leigh’s levels of energy and eye for goal.

    Leigh Griffiths = goals.

  9. Post Hearts match, Brendan was pretty obvious in his comments regards the game lacking quality.

You all can squak all you like. Griffiths has been identified as not being sufficient in quality.

Already this season, Lincoln red imps at home. 6 chances to score 1.

Astana , 3 or 4 clear cut chances.

His converstion ratio aside, his all round touch and quality in terms of team play is rank…..

Can be disguised in Spl…….. But much as the same vein as C.Gordon in goals….. Brendan ain’t daft.

Griff will be displaced in time……..and replaced by a striker that has all round better quality.

Let’s revisit this in January…. And I bet Griff will be scoffin tea cakes on the sidelines

Leigh has a lot to learn, he is a willing Student which is Tremendous.

He needs to be pressured to keep his starting slot. He is indeed a Warrior. If he is pressured he will get better and better and that is Great News for Celtic.

He is on his way to becoming a Celtic Legend. ;))

  11. One of my Favourite youtubes The_H.

You are right also about not much changing since Brendan taking over. Ronny gave too many too much leeway.

Celtic was too big for him sadly. I, like so many others, wanted him to succeed so much.

    It’s Sunday I’m…….

  12. G’night.

I might even pop by the CQN coarnir on Wednesday.

Bring on the Israelis. Celtic can beat them to nil – I’m sure.
