Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

    *****Last Man Standing 8****

Last Man Standing 8, our Maestro of a competition, starts weekend 3rd September.

Prize pot starts at £1555 and may top £2k. Must be won this time. No further rollover.

Really simple to win as well, just pick one unique winning team each week from the fixtures provided and if you are the last (wo)man standing the entire prizepot is yours. How can you fail to lose?

Cost to enter is £10 each, with 50% going to support Shay. You can have as many entries also possible as well.

  2. Brendan asked for Bertrand, they gave him Moreno and Balotteli. Thank you Liverpool and your transfer commitee.

  3. The Champions Cup has been a useful pre-season tournament for us (and financially rewarding apparently).

The match in the Aviva was a great occasion to market the Celtic brand here in Ireland. Ticket prices were shocking, though, at up to €80 for standard tickets.

Last night’s match was more reasonable @ €20 for the terrace and €35 for the stands. Pity there was only 12k fans at it. The second string performed really well I thought with Ajer having a particularly good game. Efe was also very good despite some around me almost willing him to make a mistake.

Dundalk play their CL match in the Aviva on Wedsnesday night with tickets @ €15 for adults and €5 for chislers. Hope they get a great crowd and result.

  4. Sutton slated Celtic and Ronny last year. Such attacks against the hun in the media are unprecedented. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

  5. Very sad article in the Scotsman where they clearly revel in any potential

Hapoel flashpoint debated last week on CQN and elsewhere in cyberspace.

They openly admit they’ve been reading Celtic social media, the Level 5 accusations have some merit.

There will off course be no flag sellers at Celtic Park on Wednesday least not sellers with any semblance of allegiance to Celtic, never mind any true allegiance to Palestine.

If there are such Celtic supporters that think taking a Palestinean flag into Celtic Park is o.k. and cannot rationally see the likely consequences then you’re not a Celtic fan, but a rebel without a clue, regardless of where you cluelessly stand on the war, you are beyond redemption.

Re Chris Sutton (who I loved as a player) plays the media game well, I prefer ex-Celts telling it as it is and not cow-towing to suit what the fans want to hear (copyright SSB) but I thought his constant attacks on Ronny Delia last season went too far, by the way I have never heard our Chris mention old club / new club scenario but am sure Chris does what suits his paymasters and his own job prospects, which is fair enough, for me he was way too personal with our former manager probably hoping Henrik got the gig……and sometimes even though I like him as a pundit to comment on a manager in a massive job is pretty hypocritical from a failed Lincoln manager :-)

BT love big Sutty, as I previously posted, he is a good pundit and has a bit of arrogance in the studio, much the same as he had on the park

I hope the atmosphere before and after the game will be fantastic. As an Legia fan I wish my club goes through. On the other hand Legia made incredible run down to the bottom with the sport fitness. I would need some time to find that weak Legia in my memory. It looks like coach change was the worst move in recent years.

Yes, they loved his Ronny out tedium, and he’s now backing ( ‘a proper manager’ © Chris Sutton ).

He’s on a short leash with Sevco though and unless either of us can remember a pundit that weighed into

the old Rangers? – he’ll remain on a short leash.

The good cop bad cop routine with Craigan is certainly different.

  10. GFTB..

Chris Sutton made his opinions on the way RD was having Celtic play, of which I and obviously many of our support felt.

The difference in the management of our team is plain to see…the general play and the under performers becoming the players they can be be.

Maybe I’m getting a bit carried away as its early doors, but the football we are playing in the last games is far more entertaining and the results show it.

As was witnessed yesterday, the huns will be accommodated for, we now have a manager to ensure we will pump them :)) HH

  11. What a goal from Mane. 4-1 Liverpool. Tearing Arsenal to shreds in second half, fans turning on them

  12. Gerryfaethebrig on

    BSR & Sipsiini

BR is on a different level from RD, even I know that :-)

Craigan is media savvy, he gets the gigs, not sure how as he comes across pretty thick, but Sutton & Michael Stewart are good viewing/listening

  13. Sips

Apparently it made the front page of the Faily Record. Missed it my self of course

    but Celtic cyberspace didn’t ;-)

    Rutherglen has everything.

  14. Zbyszek: If Celtic weren’t playing at the same time I would attend the match…….. and support Dundalk. They have done really well to get this far. They are well organised and have good belief in themselves. It would be great for Irish soccer for them to qualify but Legia will be a really tough team for them to beat.

Initial soundings indicate that Legia will have a large support at the match in Dublin due to the large Polish community here.

  15. Well into the second half v Motherwell last week, Chris Sutton was still having a dig at Deila. He cannot bring himself to praise Brendan without lacing it with an attack on Ronny.

Ronny left 3 months ago Chris. Get over it.

Chris made his comments 1 week ago. Get over it.

Arsenal lose by the odd goal in 7 at home against Liverpool and their fans boo them off the pitch. Glory Hunters.

Only 3 full days have passed :-)

Sutton will still be having sly digs at Ronny in the months to come, he will be too scared to slag BR off in case the wee man chins him

  19. Joking aside about the ruglen poltergeist, I just read the Daily Ranger report today. Poor woman quoted as saying they didn’t want the attention, they’ve enough stress, people coming up to the house etc.

And they report this as if it’s some other paper that she doesn’t want bothering them. It’s wrong.

Journos do a valuable job but I’m reminded of the time I told my da I wanted to be one. He said ‘you want to get sent to people’s doorsteps and ask them if they feel bad about their son or daughter getting killed?’

I know there’s more to it than that but when I read crap like that or hear journos asking stupid questions of wounded people I think back to my dads comment.

  20. Deila was miles out his depth, some guys need to get over it.If Chris Sutton didn’t have a platform like BT to call out cheats like Thomson ,and huns like Craigen , it would all be buried on a weekly basis As BSR says ,will he get a gig much longer?

  21. Any word of a new signing for Celtic?

do we still use a biscuit tin for transfers?

And how come a biscuit tin seems to have more in it than a war chest?

    Modern life eh?

  22. Chris Sutton was a top player, he knew RD was well short, and called it as most of us seen it.
