Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

Your STC will NOT be activated for Wednesday, you should receive a paper ticket, mine arrived yesterday.

    Keep the Faith!

All well at the foot of the hill in Dalmuir. Mam is doing well but was annoyed when I told her the Inter score this morning. :)

Are you making the match on Wednesday?

    Catchye soon D.

  4. Was sitting here thinking… About yesterday’s game against Inter.

We lost a goal late in the first half, from a corner. And an exquisite finish from a quality finish which occurred from a breakaway while we were well on top.

    That’s out B-team playing against Inter’s finest.

I know Fasan made some very good saves, but I think the scoreline didn’t reflect the overall performance. We had a few chances and a draw wouldn’t have been too unkind on Inter.

Also sitting here thinking (ala Charlie Nic) I didn’t see last nights game, for me, Brendan was using it for Wednesday, getting beaten by Inter means not a jot, I didn’t like the Red Imps beating us but that defeat could be the best thing for us, I listened to James Forrest on the radio yesterday and all the players seem to be buying into Brendan (like the fans) also read that Brendan is very personable to everybody at Celtic Park/Lennoxtown, I think he is an absolute genius when dealing with the media TV or written…….but am sure he would also say, it’s all about the CL and I think we will do it

Rooney certainly dived and now Mata produced an even worse one and ref awarded a free kick to man u.

The game is full of cheats.

    Mourinho’s teams have previous.

The commentators are afraid to criticise.

  7. Looks like Jose has a group of players this season that are prepared to listen to him unlike the prima donnas he had at Chelsea last season

Just reading the comments from the Guardian article you posted earlier.

One of posters related the “huns” as englands trailer trash, I’ve never heard that term before but it will be used in future. :-))

  9. To read some comments on here, you’d think diving was a new phenomenon in football. It’s no worse than it has always been, going back decades and at every level of the game.

We always tend to believe everything in life is worse now than ever before and football is no exception.

Players conned referees in the 60s. We never stopped complaining about the gamesmanship of the foreigners. We just didn’t have 10 cameras at the games then and such incidents were quickly forgotten.

  10. Man utd look more cynical and efficient under Mourinho.

Better shape and willing to foul in non threatening areas.

The big centre back Baily is a beast and should have been booked but in a Mourinho team he will be given a tolerant view by refs.

Football not the prettiest but Bournemouths ground is tight.

They will be hard to beat this year.

  11. Can anyone please clarify if our season book cards will be activated for Wednesday or are tickets being issued?

The difference is that now commentators are justifying the cheating.

When foreigners did it the same commentators were outraged.

Now that the English have plenty exponents of the select art it is ok.

    Gerrard,Rooney being prime examples.

In Scotland the commentators have been apoplectic over McGeady and Derk while remaining silent on guys who could have medalled in Olympics especially Cooper and Laudrup.

I hate all divers and do not want to see any of it justified.

I want to see retrospective punishment as the norm.

One of my favourite things on CQN a when someone posts their team for the next big game and have fourteen names written down.

    ———-

To be fair, normally three of the players are either out injured or suspended!

  15. My goodness, that was a feast….washing down the food with the cava we soaked the strawberries in..

I am such an old tart when it comes to food, to be honest I enjoy now ,as I never know when the day arrives when I cannot afford to eat well. Bit of a WTF mentality which suits me fine.

Once the cava has gone it’s onto the Budvar…..Monday is along way away right now…

Your right with your synopsis re cheating, it has been going on from the day sport began, it just got more prevalent in Scottish football when the scarlet pimpernel rolled into ipox.

It seems it is not going to dissipate now there is another cheat on our doorstep.

Well done to Chris Sutton on the hun game, he will say it as he sees it, hopefully it won’t affect his contract with BT telling the truth!

Reminds me of an incident when I was a wee bhoy. Got home from Paradise and was sitting at the kitchen table as mum prepared supper with my gran.

Gran was asking me about the game. My mum told her Billy McNeill got sent off.

“What did he get sent off for Thomas?” said Gran.

“Not sure,” I said. “I think he swore at the referee.”

“Billy McNeill wouldn’t swear,” protested my gran defiantly. “He’s a good Catholic.”

  19. I think Chris Suton is playing the game well. He knows that he will be called in, however he has a regular gig in 5 Live and is , according to reports, going down well as the straight shooter type.

He is a guy who lost a lot of money, and needs to support his family, I confess to having a huge admiration for him as a person and a footballer, so carry some bias.

I hope he prospers, he will not prosper within the inbred Scottish media, so good luck to him.

Fell victim to that myself a while back when I suggested big Victor should be careful of the referee in upcoming cup game , he was already suspended .

It was the most replies to anything I’d ever posted , got slaughtered .

So if anyone gets a bit down about being ignored just post something inaccurate and suddenly everyone replies.

Considering Bob Dylan is very much alive and kicking I find a pic of him at the bottom of the main article page with a link titled “the world mourns the loss of this rock star” quite offensive. Continue along this path and a Hard Rains Gonna Fall.

There is a moving article in the Herald about the history of our forthcoming opponents on Wednesday.

Rock Tree, can’t say I was offended but it is moronic. It made my heart beat faster when I saw it for the first time.

  25. I see Gordon Waddell in the Sunday Mail online is bemoaning Celtic buying in good players from England. Apparently Scotland should be producing its own big money stars.

Oh like McGeady and McCarthy you mean.

S’funny but I don’t recall such complaints when DeidCo were spending big, but I guess the REAL issue is that Celtic are spending money Sevco don’t have, ain’t that right Mr Waddell?

Offended in the way you would be if you knew someone was blatantly lying to you with a straight face, but agree it also moronic… and sleekit.
