Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

I did get to stand with the ‘men’ sometimes but my place was right at the fence at the front of the Celtic End ( slightly to the right of the goal). I also remember trying to stand on cans but they were full………………and warm!

  2. Did anyone else sit on the wall at the back of the Jungle? That’s where I spent my formative years. The only disadvantage was when the goalie kicked the ball up high. You couldn’t follow it.

  3. Anyone see Mark O’Hara’s celebration yesterday after his goal against the huns?

I see he’s Scottish but has anyone from the North of Ireland seen a similar celebration before?

Could be innocent but made me laugh

    SNAP!

Fifteen years later,I watched the legend Bobby Lennox take a pen v Bobby Clark from that same position.

Points make prizes, but my uncle’s classmate fluffed it.

I could have saved it despite being thirty yards away when he kicked it!

Still,273 goals I can forgive him.

(Not sure,I remember that pen more than his goals. Says a lot about the bitter b I can be at times)

  5. BMCUW,

Yes the blog is rolling along nicely at the moment coz Celtic are also rolling along nicely. There are quite a few monikers conspicuous by their absence.

However at first opportunity the Rudi’s et al will be back with a vengeance and their will be good Tims who will inadvertently come to their aid, trotting out the old platitudes, “play the ball not the man”, “open to all” and ” everyone is entitled to their opinion”.

Tony Donnelly is right with his “Lurking Huns GIRFUY”.

I wonder would CQN survive 4 seasons without a trophy.

And I saw Narey hit the winner in 83 from that spot which won them the league.

Wandering round from the jungle as always.

I made a point of leaving onto Janefield St after that. Just go to a different pub.

  8. I’m still laughing at the concept of £2.5 million for tavernier!!!

Maybe there will be a refund clause if it turns out that (a) he can’t defend

    (B) when someone actually marks him he ain’t great going forward either!!!

Still in England warbs thinks he’d be on a squillion quid a week – which is why he’s in Scotland taking £8k instead yeah?

I was there because a big group from Greenock CSC went to that part of the Celtic End – saw all the greats from that we spot. I remember all the phases – leaning on the wee wall with head under the fence, leaning on the face, moving back to stand in front of the men, standing with the men and finally going in my own. The stages of becoming a fully fledged Tim.

CQN is a wonderful vehicle. Even those who have given up on it are the first to admit that they have made lifelong friendships with people they would otherwise have brushed aside to get to the bar.

MICKTT asked me about those I had met. About 3 or4 years ago. He hadn’t met any. I told him they were an absolutely smashing bunch. Not a tosser amongst them.

    Statistical improbability,he replied.

Then he went to CQN10. He knows now what we all know.

It’s a shite song but the sentiment is bang on. Together we are beautiful.

I agree re the blog, I tend to think/hope all are Celtic fans on here, never in a million miles would I ever to even pretend to be a Hun/Sevconian but each to their own :-)

Jobo if you read back Doug the sloosh should read “doing the slosh” not sue about the spelling, hope you all had a magical day and you and the Mrs enjoyed your anniversary

  12. The SMSM full steam ahead on Wednesdays game with negativity on the flag issue, me? I’ll trust the Celtic supporters to ram it right up the SMSM arses, there is an article in the daily arse wipe today, and I’m telling you Michael Gannon lurks in here among with many other and that’s a fact.

What happens on Wednesday is in the hands of the Celtic supporters, not what’s in today’s chip wrappers, with all things good at Celtic Park right now the media are just waiting on us to make an arse of it, are we that predictable? Well we will see come Wednesday.

Lurking Huns, level 5 little helpers and Michael Gannon, GIRFUYs .

Have you ever considered that CQN10 was like the MIB were you only saw what you were allowed to see until you were initiated.

I know, you’d think some of us would pick nicer exterior looks.

Tapas it is…bacalao basque style, pork n beans Catalan style, chorizo in cider, patatas bravas ( bought in) , morcilla with bitter marmalade glaze. Let the cooking commence, well at about one o.clock actually.

    Have a good one everybody…

Mick went to that with no knowledge of any CQNer. I arranged for him to meet ACGR and SIPSINI who would then introduce him to the BV skwaaad.

No questions,no suspicion, just a smashing fella meeting exactly the same.

If CQN is about anything,it’s about fraternity. It’s given us friends and funded charities, and provided us with a place to vent our spleen. Done loadsa stuff.

But the most important is the friends. It’s not a clique, far from it. I’m constantly humbled by acceptance. And I do my best to live up to it.

  16. Team for Wednesday night imo….

Surprised at you this morning. Many of our so-called supporters are using the club.

The problem is that those choosing to wave that flag on Wednesday do it full in the knowledge that it will (potentially) lead to Celtic being penalised. What censure could be meted out ranges from the financial to expulsion and all stops in between. Due to our previous in UEFA competition, I’m worried it will not be solely monetary.

Our non-friends in the SMSM must be salivating at their already written stories and will have UEFA on speed dial.

The ignoramuses waving that fleg are being led by the nose. They care nowt for Celtic, just their own * selfish stance and opinions.

We will be collateral damage in their little publicity gain.

Not one of them will volunteer to pay what they may cost Celtic.

They may as well sing the Billy boys.

    * The ideas have been planted in their heads, just like the flags will be planted in their hands on the walkway..

Dont want to get the lad in bother but i’ve been to a few weddings around the border where, after a few beers, lads would put their arm over their faces so as to hide their faces and make a gesture with their hands

Like i said probably nothing just found it funny

  22. McCart looked competent last night, very good on the ball which is good to see ala O’connell. A few times he chose a more difficult option to retain possession rather than take the easy option to launch it upfield. A bi-product of excellent coaching.

  23. Ahh the flag bearers…a quick look on Twitter tells you that this type of bampot, of limited intelligence, shall be defender of all things Palestine on Wednesday night. When you know something to be against the rules yet you proceed anyway it flies in the face of what you allegedly protest against. Idiotic.

  24. Corkcelt. The small minded approach of instantly assuming any dissenting voices are Huns etc is plainly wrong. It may salve the odd conscious and it may allow some to wallow in complacency.

But ignoring the big picture, ignoring what has actually happened and ignoring what will continue to happen is just a 3 wise monkeys approach.

If you and others are happy with that then fine. But don’t expect everyone to meekly fall in line just because they are attacked and called names.

If everyone is fit Forrest will be a sub, he’s more of an impact player and on current form a good option on the bench

  26. I dont think anyone who played yesterday will be in the starting 11, therefore I would go with

    Gordon

    Lustig Toure O’Connell Tierney

    Brown ? Rogic

    Forrest/Roberts Griffiths Sinclair

I’m afraid you missed my point mate, I was giving our supporters the benifet of the doubt, I’m just hoping that some of they young ones do not get groomed on Wednesday night by the usual suspects, I know who they are, you know, and they will be there outside and inside Celtic Park causing it, they should be ignored and told to get to, until then I’ll keep my powder dry.

When I saw the first clip I thought ah, virtual game so no conclusion reached on his ability.

When I saw the second clip, now your talking, great reflex GK, doesn’t hold the ball much, he can save a penalty (useful with sevco entering the league and the dodgy pens MIB will awa d against us in other games) and one observation he took the ball with the feet off a player, MIB surely would have awarded a penalty, for Dorus to save of course…:)

On the evidence of your second clip, give him the Jersey.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!
